yes i feel when they dropped "down with the king" it was the end and they were trying to fit end to the new era. rappers making a lot of albums is new...long ago their careers didnt have staying power. the first album was your intro, the second album was better, then the third album was either a departure from your style or your last album.

In all honesty DMC , the GOLDEN ERA was TOO ADVANCED for YOU. I think RUN could've HUNG with what was going on...... but YOUR SIMPLICITY had you STUCK in the EARLY 80's. And this is being said with the utmost LOVE & RESPECT FOR RUN DMC. As a FAN of YOURS, Y'all DEFINITELY INFLUENCED MY LOVE FOR HIPHOP, but it was RAKIM that made me decide to start EMCEEIN MYSELF. EVERY MC DOESN'T necessarily HAVE to be SUPER LYRICAL.......BUT.......in a time of ADVANCEMENT........ BE ABLE TO ADVANCE. When RAKIM, KRS ONE, BIG DADDY KANE & KOOL G RAP came on the scene, things were ADVANCING in EMCEEIN. LL COOL J was able to HANG; so was ULTRAMAGNETIC MCS, EPMD, HEAVY D, SALT & PEPA, SLICK RICK ,etc. It was NO TIME for NURSERY RHYMIN any more. PEACE & LOVE to YOU FOREVER & ALWAYS, BIG BRO. YOUR LEGENDARY STATUS IS UNDENIABLE & YOUR LEGACY is SET IT STONE.

Here is what REALLY happened to Run-DMC.....
They were the number one rap group in 1986 without a doubt. BUT......... on their heels were three groups that would eventually make them look out of touch. 1st, NWA came out very anti police which was liked by minorities being beat up by cops at the time. 2nd, Public Enemy came out and pretty much destroyed Run-DMC with political songs and really good music which was very different. By 1989, three years after Raising Hell, Run-DMC was done and they knew it. You can't remain number one without evolving because music changes every 2 to 5 years. Also LL Cool J and all these strong angry rap groups that came out at that time made Run-DMC and even Michael Jackson seem like wimps. The same thing happened in 1990 when Nirvana destroyed the big hair bands that seemed soft compared to Nirvana. The same will happen in the current music scene between 2021 and 2025 a group or singer will pop up that will destroy the current lame music that rules like the Justin Beibers, Drake, and Taylor Swift. The only real hard artists I see staying strong if they continue their careers are Cardi B Bruno Mars and Rosalia. But, today's music all sounds the same with everybody else. It's sad.

Run Dmc evolved with what was happening......that's what destroyed them! Run Dmc made political albums before PE. That's where PE got the inspiration......that's why Run Dmc was apart of the extra strength posse

Tougher Than Leather was an underrated masterpiece. I could do without that Mary, Mary, Papa Crazy, Miss Elaine shit. But, aside from them joints, there was some "new" shit goin' on with that album (at the time) - every song had a different rhyme scheme/pattern. That movie didn't do it any justice, though; it SUCKED!🤣🤣🤣
I understand where D was comin' from, on subliminally goin' at Kane and them. You always wanna throw warning shots to the up & comers; it's all part of the sport. But, Jay and Run were right to say, "Naaaww D, we ain't goin' that route." Cause, let's be for real, Kool G. Rap, BDK and Tha R would have tore that ass up!🤣🤣🤣
Run-DMC are a legendary rap group....groundbreakers and all that good stuff. But, lyrically speaking, they were not battle rappers, in the pure sense of the sector.

There was so much bass, during their performance, I couldn't understand a damn thing they were saying. Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince had an INCREDIBLE set - they blew me tha fuck away! PE scared tha shit out of me, when they came on; I didn't know what tha hell was going on! hahahaha. And when Run and them finally took the stage, I was just in awe. I was finally seeing these gods of hip-hop, live and in person!
I will only suggest that if you haven't in a while, to take another listen to "Tougher Than Leather" in its' entirety.
