  • Large animal clipper blades are used to shear and clip sheep, llamas, alpacas, goats, large dogs, cows, horses and even exotic zoo animals. These blades are sharpened a little differently than other standard clipper blades. Bonnie Megowan demonstrates the difficulties of sharpening these blades and the problems these type of large animal blades present the average clipper blade sharpener. #sharpening

    Great video as always Bonnie and a wonderful reference. I do not do a lot of these because there is not a large market for these types of blades in my area. However, these blades do come into the shop from time to time and they can be very time consuming. They require a lot of cleaning and multiple charges on the wheel. Definitely not my favorite sharpening task but always challenging.

      The laser light is the Stanley brand and is easily found at many hardware stores. I use a diluted solution of Evaporust in my ultrasonic cleaner. About 1/3rd water. We don't sell Evaporust, but you can order in on line.

    Sheep shearing metal has a concave grind. Shearing sharpening machines have a convex face. Combs and cutters are held in different positions relative to the convexity. Flat grinding will produce a comb and cutter that works briefly but will heat very quickly. A properly sharpened comb should do 50 sheep and a cutter 25.

    • @BonikaShears
      @BonikaShears  Před 2 lety

      Yes, our equipment will put a hollow into the blades. You are right about the concave grind.

      The heiniger machine for sheep llama etc is totally different from the Nebraska system, I use a heiniger type plate machine for pet and horse, but not sheep, the sheep machine is vertical and uses a pendulum cutter holder. There are videos on line, usually Australian demonstrating these. The discs are grit on paper glued to the rotating disc the comb and cutter use different arcs on the pendulum. I steer clear of these as the geometry is totally different.
