I asked a Chinese restaurant worker near my house why they were going to stay open on Christmas and they flat out said “some people can’t cook, so when they burn the food, we’re here for them”. Also said they didn’t really celebrate Christmas so it wasn’t a big deal for them. Makes sense to me.

Same for the corner store run by an Indian family. I was grateful he was open when we went to get an ingredient we needed and he said “we don’t celebrate it so you can” I told him I appreciate it a lot and he said “thank you and Merry Christmas to your family enjoy your dinner”

If anything, in-universe Ralphie's town is doing pretty good. His school appears to be integrated, and the students of color don't appear to be at any disadvantage or subject to harassment. And when the Chinese folks were singing, Ralphies family didn't appear to be making fun of them. There weren't any snide comments or racial slurs being thrown around, just some giggling from some kids with little to no impulse control (aka a realistic portrayal) so of course a kid would laugh at a mispronunciation. Considering the setting, he's in a progressive town. and remember, this movie takes place in 1940. There's a lot of positive racial representation in this "racist" movie.

@@jeffgebarowski4808 No one, including Trump, ever called the Chinese people that, as a race thing. It was always about the country of origin of the virus, simply as a location (and driven, in part, as a somewhat emotional pushback against dishonest claims it initiated elsewhere or had an unknown origin). Just like nearly every other widespread disease is named for its place of origin (Spanish flu, West Nile virus, Ebola, Zika, etc.).
Political enemies of Trump, like the woman in the video, stood to gain politically by lying on Trump to discredit him, trying to twist his words into a meaning he never put into them. Their fake attack on him apparently worked, if good Chinese people like the OP believe any of those terms referenced their racial identity....

It is what it is. I could show this to my grandma (with Cantonese as her first language) and she wouldn't be focusing on the "racist" accent. She would be focusing on the fact that there's Chinese ppl working at a Chinese restaurant on Christmas day and she would be proud of that being in an American movie! It's context, it adds to the story and fun, it was representation without it forced down our throats. It worked.
Side note: It's not racist but it's inaccurate. Chinese ppl can pronounce L's bc there's L's in the language.

Its a societal feminine thing, it's not that annoying but it's socialized into women to not sound "too sure" of themselves (this isn't said directly to them, it's more something that's learned with time, trial, and error), so they are more likely to end sentences on an upwards inflection whereas men will typically only do so when actually unsure and/or when asking a question.

Or your Canadian. Most Canadians have the “Canadian rise”, it’s part of our dialect. Every sentence sounds like a question, rising higher till we pass the conversation on and we drop the tone of voice. Never noticed it till I studied dialect and speech in college. Americans don’t tend to have it due to how tightly pack the population, so there’s a whole bunch of different accents/dialects due to the need to differentiate between the people who live near by, but aren’t in same state/geographical part of country. Canadas population is spread out so for most part our accent is similar to other Canadians.

Fun fact: White Christmas was a movie made in 1954. Bing Crosby and company sing the song at the very end because they were hoping and praying for snow at their former commanding officers (he was a General that really cared about his men and let the boys carry on a Christmas show while on the front lines during WW2. Despite being ordered to move out to fight.) ski lodge and their was no snow so no people were showing up. Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye were successful TV personalities and secretly put the word out during a broadcast to have all the Generals men travel to the ski lodge in support. All the men show up, dress in full uniform and have a very emotional ceremony for him right before the very end where Bing and company put on a Christmas show for everybody and it snows, inspiring them to sing the song White Christmas. So the full context of the meaning behind the song is way deeper than it just being about snow, but the song was a smash hit and was played every Christmas season. Many people have never seen the movie and just think its a bout snow, which is fine, but I highly recommend seeing the movie.

The racist part of the movie was while celebrating Lincoln's birthday, they wore blackface. Blackface was commonplace back then, obviously not anymore. Stereotypes do often exist for a reason. My wife is Japanese and naturalized to the US about 7 yrs ago. A Christmas Story is one of her favorite holiday movies, and that scene in particular. And although that scene is about Chinese, she’s said many times now that she relates because Rs and Ls sound the same to her and she can rarely tell the difference. They’re also extremely difficult to speak as well because the Japanese language doesn’t use those sounds at all, and just has something kinda similar but is more of a mix of R, D, and L. I’m Japanese bilingual and conversely that sound was difficult for me to learn and pronounce, so I get it. I guess we’re both racist though b/c we love the movie, so bad bad us. ;)

Exactly. The scene works because it's realistic-- many Asian languages do not have the "L" sound in this context, and it's one of those sounds that if you don't hear it by a certain age during early childhood, your brain doesn't form the recognition for it. Back in college (a little over 10 years ago, so before people started were super sensitive like today), I watched this movie with my roommate, whose parents are from China. She laughed so hard and said it sounded like her parents speaking English and not understanding why they were saying certain words wrong.

He goes all movie doing the exact opposite of what the adults looking out for him told him to do. He's not trying to learn and grow, he chooses to be rude and destructive... just like the people around him. If anything the movie is a giant red flag.
It was clearly designed as a "down to earth" response to Leave It to Beaver's squeaky clean characters. The issue is that instead they created a story where nothing positive happens and it's just people choosing to be disrespectful and digging themselves deeper. And after a movie of being told that he'd shoot his eye out, what does he do? Did he think about positioning or figure out how to operate it safely? Ask for help? Learn ANYTHING? Nope! Just acts the same numbskull he always was with the adults choosing to be just as destructive toward each other and neglect him.
The movie is all about a neglectful and abusive family. There may not have been physical violence, but it glorifies the broken relationships and toxic behaviors rather than helping people recognize what is abusive and disrespectful about it. I fail to see what's entertaining about watching a family attacking each other and breaking itself apart. Cathartic in some moments, maybe. Reminiscing of when we were disrespectful twerps, maybe. But a whole movie of deliberate antagonism toward each other? Pass.

The intro for the song White Christmas which is almost never recorded with the song goes like this because the song writer was in Southern California when he was writing it:
The sun is shining, the grass is green, the orange and palm trees sway! There’s never been such a day in Beverly Hills LA. But it’s December the 24th, and I am longing to be up north!

Though the Chinese don't know anything about Christmas, they're trying to be respectful and give the family a good Christmas because they know it's important to white Americans.

The North Carolina governor pointed something out that I hadn’t really realized before, I mean, I knew that white hatred has been made an accepted main stream global thing, but I had not made the connection he had made until hearing him say it, he said that the term people of color is a gross and hateful way of putting every single race and ethnicity in the world into a group that the white race and only the white can’t be a part of, literally bringing all races together EXCEPT the white race. It’s a truly shameful and disturbing truth that I hadn’t really understood to that degree until he broke it down so simply and so honestly.

The term POC is literally meant to include every single shade and color, race and ethnicity, except white people. Encouraging and pushing an anti-white culture and mindset globally.

AND there are legit miracles that have occurred and were performed by the Holy Spirit as made manifest by an angel of the Lord. Sometimes these angels of the Lord appear as Santa Claus aka St. Nicholas aka Kris Kringle.
For example, I watched a made-for-TV special years ago with eyewitness testimonies, etc. of people who had amazing Christmas miracles happen. It was a collection of stories from all over the States spanning several decades.
One story I still remember roughly 30 years later was of some kind of a non-profit that was collecting presents to give to foster children and orphans in their area. One night close to Christmas, their offices were broken into, and every single present was stolen. Everybody was understandably devastated. And with Christmas so close, they weren't sure what to do. The community rallied and gathered some gifts, but it wasn't enough to get every child a gift. They prayed for a miracle.
The night before they were due to deliver the gifts, Santa came and brought with him enough gifts to DOUBLE the number of gifts they had to give away from before the robbery! They were overwhelmed with gifts for the children! On top of that, the jovial fellow they called Santa-not a single person recognized him, but he knew all of them, even by name. And before they could stop him to ask him who he "actually is" or however you want to say it, he left.
Nobody since then knew who he was or was able to figure out where all the presents came from. There was just nothing to identify him or the origin of the gifts!
I think I believe in Santa Claus as if he were an angel of the Lord, like how Gabriel and others are angels of God. And the Lord has such a tender heart for children, that is to be sure!

I really really miss my days as a child when we had Christmas pageants, that included many different traditions and cultures. We learned Christmas songs in other languages too. We colored pages for Hanukkah and Kwanza as well. We did gift exchanges at school and had pot luck Christmas parties where every family brought a favorite food of their culture around Christmas. In Arizona that meant everything from jello salad to tamales. It was a better time, it was a more happy time, it was a more peaceful time and I had friends and foes but never saw color. We need to go back to that and stop looking for things to be offended by. God bless you all and Merry Christmas!!!

I wish that's how it was as a millennial in elementary school. I grew up with every admin in my school telling us it's "happy holidays" and not "Merry Christmas" but then never taught us anything about other celebrated holidays. I learned about dreidels (Jewish game) at my Christian Christmas party and other world holidays through my interactions directly with those of other faiths, not my public school. Because I grew up in New Mexico, they only taught us the purpose of luminaries but left out the Christian meaning behind them by the time I reached middle school.
Point being, rather than our public schools making the holidays inclusive, they made it feel rather EXclusive and particularly made a point of excluding Christian faith because our beliefs were "offensive" to everyone else.

As much of the film relies on exagerration, the Chinese restaurant scene is perfectly fitting.
