- In this Guild Wars 2 (GW2) guide I'll help you choose the class, or profession as we call it in GW2, you should play! At the start of the video you'll find my personal Class Tier List that shows the difficulty of each class and their corresponding Elite Specializations.
This guide is completely up-to-date for 2022 and the years to come. It includes all the Professions you can play as a free-to-play player and the Elite Specializations that come with the Heart of Thorns, Path of Fire and End of Dragons expansions.
Each Profession and their Elite Specializations are explained in about 200 seconds. This keeps the video understandable for new Guild Wars 2 players. Builds are not discussed since this might change in the (near) future.
DISCLAIMER: Anything said or mentioned in this video is in the context of the video game Guild Wars 2.
In this this video I'll discuss the following points/questions:
• What profession should you play?
• What are the Elite Specializations for each GW2 Profession and Expansion?
• What profession or Elite Specialization should you use in specific situations?
• Gameplay of the all the professions in Guild Wars 2
• A tier list for each profession based on their difficulty

Honestly the best profession guide I've seen. Made me install the game :D
Oh damn! I made you install the game?! That's great!
Yeah, I always thought gw2 combat is really slow with ugly vfx but after seeing the elementalist I’ve decided to give it a go :D
I'm just about to try the game and this video is by far the best introduction video.
@K1TT3N
Same here. This breakdown got me too install as well!
@@danielb3470 how are you doing so far? am thinking of starting the game, too.
I've re-watched this so many times while planning out my characters. Thanks for a thorough and to the point video!
Glad it was helpful!
What did you go with?
I did the same lol and I choice Guardian 👌🏻
Such a high quality video and one of the most informative ones I've seen for MMORPG mechanics! I always come back to this one
Wooooahhhh J!!! Thank you sooo sooo much! Your donation means the world to me.
I've put so much effort into this video. I tried to be as concise as possible and I think it worked out fine!

I played this game for a few months when it came out. I was overwhelmed by all the new stuff they added to the game when I returned today. This guide is a great summary, thank you.
Thank you so much! Good luck on picking a profession!
Literally same
Necromancer may be THE best class to learn the game with. It has a huge pool of hitpoints backed up by the Lifeforce mechanic, excellent sustain, access to very strong builds in both Power and Condition damage, pets to distract enemies, and great control of conditions and boons. The Reaper elite spec is particularly indestructible in the right build, able to tank truly insane amounts of damage comfortably.
Necromancer has sooooo many possibilities! It's still one of my favorites!
@@Kyosika always will be, but lately i'm starting to think that getting people invested in tougher classes like ele early on would be good for the end game pve community as a whole, because people can do good dps on classes like reaper completely by accident, so they don't actually spend any time learning cancels or rotations, they get used to the game on easy mode and when it's time to step into raids and stuff they quickly roll over and say "well i'm never doing that again"
Such an excellent video, keep sending this to friends getting into the game! Excellent pacing and editing - absolutely perfect for showcasing each class :)
Much appreciated! So happy you like it!
The detail that you go into on each class is excellent! Quick yet thorough enough to discuss their differences! Makes me want to pick up a Mesmer or elementalist again!
Awesome, thank you! So happy it helped :D
The amount of work put into this video is greatly appreciated! Such high quality work man!
Much appreciated! It took me so long to create, glad it's out there and people like it ;)
I'm so happy this video was put back up, I've sent it to numerous friends to help them dip their toes into GW2. This is hands down the best overview of all classes on YT. Great work here!!! THANK YOU!
Woooow! Thank you so much Krystal! If there is anything I can do for you, let me know!
What a 10/10 video! Quite detailed, yet easy to follow and engaging. Great work bro, thank you♥️
Thank you so much David! Happy to hear that :)
Onda sam prešao na Underworld zbog guilda. amazing video! glad it was recommended to me. this is such a great primer and i'll be sending it to friends to get them to figure out a class they want to play. great job!!
Oh yeah!! Thank you so much :D
I'm in an on-off-relationship with GW2 from the start of the game, have tried most of the core classes for myself, but am far from proficient with all the possible specs. This video got you a like as well as a sub from me since it gives an excellent quick overview of the general playstyles. I will definitely recommend it to some newer players I ran into. Best regards and thank you very much for the obvious effort put into this.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it! And sharing is very much appreciated! :)
Dude very good job, i was looking for something like this video a week ago but no one ever explained it this well!
Thank you so much! It took ages to create to I'm very happy with all the positive reactions!
Been binging Mukluk, and I greatly appreciate this guide both for it’s in depth analysis while being easily digestible
Thank you!! Tell Muk I said hi!
This video is the most complete, while being a straight to the point guide to chose a class that I’ve seen. You’ve done a great job !
YES! That's exactly what I was going for!
Thanks for this! I've been playing GW2 very casually on and off for a few years but only recently decided to play more seriously. This video is amazingly helpful in deciding what professions to focus on!
Glad you enjoyed! So happy with comments like these!
Very compact but detailed overview! Great job! Good for beginners als well as returning players without getting too long!!
Much appreciated!
After having been part of the open beta but having put the game down before the expansions, this was a really helpful refresher and a darn good one. Cheers, amigo!
Glad to hear it!
This is such a well made and well produced video, great job! I will definitely be linking this to any new players asking for help looking for a class to play.
Also mesmer for life :)
Awesome! Thank you so much! Sharing is super helpful for these kind of videos :)
Just starting out on GW2 after about 9 years now and this video is by far the best I came across on deciding what to start with! Thanks @Kyosika! Well done!
Glad I could help and welcome! :D
Im pretty sure this videos is the quickest guide that can give you alot about every professions in Guild Wars 2. Very good and helpful. but new players would still be overwhelm because of elite specialization lol. anyway, great video as always kyosika! keep it up
Glad you think so! You have a point. New players might be overwhelmed but I would love to give them a taste of what they can eventually unlock!
I just started playing GW2 a few days ago, can't wait to find out who to main 😊
I personally love elementalist ❤️
Oh yeah! Then this is the video for you! Let me know if you need any help :)
Prepare to suffer lmao. Get a mesmer imo. It works great in every game mode. It has great power and condi dps variants, can provide alac or quickness, it has great and unique utility for your group, it can fill exclusive roles and it's easy to play.
Elementalist is very hard and other classes can do what elementalists can do and more with much less effort.
@@eckee So far I'm lvl 30 with the ele and I learned all the 20 staff spells. I personally quite enjoy the different elements and heals with different boons based on what I need in a fight. Tbh, I hate the fact that weaver is VERY HARD to play and so far people only told me to get off ele because it's hard and useless in endgame, unless I'm a tempest. I personally love playing difficult classes, it makes everything more interesting, and for mesmer, I tried it until lvl 21 and I don't enjoy it as much as elem.
Some people say you should play what you like, but elitists say that only some classes are viable and they refuse anyone who isn't playing one of those in their group.
If you say mesmer is better, I'll try playing it more and see what's up, but honestly, I would rather stick to ele and go for weaver 😄
@@Alfheidhr If you wanna do endgame pve content with other players, like raids or strikes, mesmer is better. And mesmer is better in pvp and wvw too. You’re not gonna be really useful with elementalist in group content. Other than that, play whatever you love, it’s a game and it’s your enjoyment. And it’s easier to build other professions once you have one ready. You don’t have to pick one.
Edit: ele is also good in wvw but mesmer brings more tools imo thus more valuable.
And I mentioned mesmer is easy because easy means better overal performance. Real bosses do not stand still and let you attack however you want. They run, jump, phase attack you etc. With elementalist you’ll have lots of downtime affecting your dps. And that’s important because that’s the only thing you bring to the group.
@@eckee I personally despise PVP and whatever is tied to it. I EXCLUSIVELY want to do PVE content. But as I said, I'll level up a mesmer as well, and see where to go from there. Thank you for taking the time to write back to me. Or as you would say in Turkey, Tessekur Ederim 😄
Great Video!! I'm about to get back in again with a friend of mine, who basically never played an MMO, and I recommended this video for him (and myself) as an initial understanding of what class he wants to play.
I played GW2 way back on release in 2012 (I think), and it was so good. The timing was off because I was in my second year of college, just got married and my mom passed away all that year. I started playing GW2 but I quickly realized it was an escape from everything happening that year, so I quit a few months in and focused on dealing with everything instead. That was definitely the right call. I always wanted to return, but never got around to it, and this video explains everything so well it really helped me prepare to start a new game.
I'm going to start with Guardian, because I remember it being sort of OP when I played lol. Since I'll kind of be carrying him through the workings of an MMO I think the ability to heal him or myself as a mostly solo player will be a big help, along with shield and pretty good damage. I also like the fact that the professions get a bit more difficult as you go through expansions, because it kind of keeps the game fresh over time.
First of all, I'm sorry to hear that your mom passed. I hope you, your family and friends are doing well. I hope you got through everything well.
Furthermore, Guardian is a really solid pick. It was strong in 2012 and it might be even stronger in 2022. It is really a jack of all trades that can be found in every (end game) group!
Good luck on your journey and don't forget to have fun!
Just gotta say… the production value on this video is crazy good. I also, basically, agree 100% with your analysis here. From beginner, intermediate, hard classification and the quick break down of the classes- 10/10! 🤙🏼
Thank you so much Leon! It took me agesssss to make! I had to take a break of content creation after I was done.
I don't play GW2 but this video is so high quality!! I'm kind of interested now?
I love how in-depth and in-lore your explanation was, and that you added full English captions. Thanks!
Wooahhhh! Thank you so much! Very happy to hear that :)
This is super helpful. MMO's are always overwhelming at first and to really get a feel for the classes, I'm having to put at least 4 hours into the character to even start to understand the skills and class potential.
Glad it helps!
Really great guide, thank you so much! At first I was apprehensive, cause 200s seemed too little time, but the way you explain everything makes it worth the while.
You're very welcome! I tried my best to be as concise as possible!
Thanks, as returning player that's what I needed - an updated run down to the point. Much appreciated.
No problem! Glad it helped :) 👍
This is the greatest explanation of the classes I have found so far. Jumping in new you get told to "try them all" but you really don't know what you're looking forward to when leveling. Now I know exactly what I wanna try. Thank you so much.
What did you end up trying?
Daredevil Thief and Reaper Necro stood out as playstyles I would enjoy. I already have an Engi just gotta unlock the mech.
Wow, thank you! Glad the video helped :)
5 seconds in and a better editing than many other Gw2 Creators. Cheers, man!
Wow, thanks! Glad it helped you!
Really helpful because I missed some things and wanted to see the new professions quickly. Well done!
Happy to help!
Absolute banger vid, keep coming back to it as I continue through my GW2 journey. Thank you for the content!
Ayyyeeeee! Glad to hear that buddy! Glad the video helped. It took a ton of time to create so these reactions are really pleasant to read.
Massive thanks for this video. I started GW2 the day it launched but was only able to play for a month before I had to get rid of my PC. Finally looking to get back into the game after all these years. Looks like I'll be going engineer
Great choice! Have fun buddy!
You forgot to mention the unique thief mechanic, Stealth Attack . Anytime you go into stealth, you stop attacking and you're normal attack (1) changes into an entirely different skill called a Stealth Attack; that you can use once while in stealth. Every weapon has a different stealth attack and effects.
It is powerful and should be used anytime you're in stealth. New players can easily miss mechanic and continue their normal rotation, losing out on some big numbers. I know I did when I first tried thief.
Ah yes! Great addition! It's the same with the Mirage's Ambush skill.
@@Kyosika also missed the combo attack on the 3 if you're using two 1-handed weapons :)
Thank you so much for your video, it's amazing ! You covered everything I need to know to choose in enough detail
I'm so glad! Happy to hear this!
Seriously the best profession guide out there (and I’ve seen most). As a veteran that left the game for a while and is rejoining to try out EoD this video is invaluable.
Having deep knowledge of the elite specialisations up to PoF I can say that the info you give for those is perfect to understand and reflects the class very well so hearing your take on the EoD classes makes me feel prepared for my return. Thanks!
So happy with your comment. Glad you liked it!
new player here, you made me want to play so many options that i didn't consider before, great work on this video
Glad I could help!
I’ve recently been checking out GW2 and this has been really nice and helpful! Ty!
Also, coming from FFXIV where each job has about 24-36 (usually more toward 30-36 or so) abilities and there are 19 jobs (plus 3 gatherers and like 8 crafters although they’re all basically the same abilities so more like 21 jobs worth total) and every job can be played on the same character, that’s like 630-780 abilities total (give or take), I think this more than prepares me for Elementalist when I get around to that xD
You are going to be a great Elementalist with this experience!
@@Kyosika I forgot to mention I decided to try Ranger first xD and I’m really liking Druid so far (all 1 of the skills I have atm lol) but I’m definitely looking forward to trying elementalist in the future too! Ty!
Keep in mind that Druid specifically is very much designed around healing allies and providing boons (buffs basically). Granted, you can still play a Druid with all the abilities and weapons that Core Ranger gets, but you'll probably get more value out of Druid's additions in most party based content.
@@crimsonwizahd2358 I wish I got notifications for replies so I’m not like a month late :c
Ty! Those types of classes tend to be my favorite! I’m also really glad at the versatility of the game and how I can be more of a damage dealer with another elite spec if I choose/need lol
@@Nienna_Asyare Maybe you can see replies in gmail? atleast I can.
This was incredibly well done. I just downloaded the game last week and have been looking for a guide like this 👍
Hope you enjoy it! This took me tons of hours to create so I'm happy you like them!
No frills, tells you what you need to know, includes every detail needed to make a decision. Extremely nice work, man~!
Recently got back into GW2 after hearing news of its most recent expansion coming up & its apparent uptick in popularity lately. Needed a video like this.
Glad it helped!
Excellent video! I just wanted to return to Guild Wars 2 and I am torn between Thief (because of Deadeye and Specter) and Mesmer (Mirage and Virtuoso) - I can’t say your video made the decision easier, but it helped a lot in getting a real good overview about the core mechanics of each spec.
Virtuoso and Specter are very new player friendly. Virt is ranged and can deal good damage without too much tryhard and is excellent if you put in the effort, and Specter has good mobility and damage and can self generate barrier + has a shroud so it is very resistant
Glad you enjoyed! Why not level them both! :)
Excellent guide! Mesmer is my favorite! I really miss when phantasms were permanent until destroyed. I’m hoping the next expac will see messers be more support oriented.
I hope so too! Mesmers are awesome!!
OMG I am new to the game and this by far gave me the most information and helped me to understand my guradian! I love how to went over all spec actually saying how they operate and how they are different from each other. I am going to save this vid for later when I lvl different professions! Thank you ♥
Glad the video helped!
Fantastic video, been playing as a thief and Mesmer but didn't realize how much was going on with all the other classes. Thank you so much for the breakdown.
No worries! Glad it helped!
Returning player from before any expansions so im looking forward to the elite specs!
Oh yes! You're going to enjoy this one! :)
Feeding the ravenous, soulless beast that is The Algorithm. Amazing video! Question for ya: some of the elite specs are labeled as "easy" in the "hard" core professions. So if you play Thief, it is always difficult, but the Daredevil elements are easy, or does the class in general BECOME easy when you play DD?
i don't play thief personally but i do play mesmer which imo has a similar situation with the virtuoso spec, i think what it means is that the initial learning curve of thief is on the harder side since its a more unconventional class with its lack of cooldowns and such, but the shift from being proficient at thief to learning daredevil would be fairly straightforward since it doesn't change a whole lot about the class's identity and just adds on top of it. on the other hand specter and deadeye change the class a LOT so the things you learned on core thief arent always transferable
I main thief and id say that Deadeye is a bit hard in pve since the rotation is simple, but you lose a lot of damage if you fail it, the Daredevil is by far the easiest elite spec in my opinion and Specter isnt that hard either. In Pvp thief is generally harder than some other classes, since you arent very strong and have to rely on deceiving your enemies to win. The class generally changes difficulty based on the elite spec, but I personally dont agree with all the ratings.
Great question! What I mean by that, if we take the thief as an example, is that the Thief is generally harder compared to other professions (e.g. Guardian, Necro). So, if you chose a thief then then the Daredevil would be easy. So it's basically Hard + Easy = Intermiate(ish). Specter for example > Hard + Harder = Really hard to master!
Liked and shared with my buddy since we're both going into GW2 for the first time in over 6 years. Thanks!
You rock! Good luck!
Great video! I play scrapper atm, having a blast. And helpful seeing your keybindings, as I was struggling a bit with all the buttons on the far side of mu keyboard.
Great to hear! You can always reset your keybinds if you want!
If an Elite doesn't feel strong or useful it is probably better for a different game mode. There's open world, Map METAs, PvP, WvW, 5 man content, and 10 man content.
That's true!!
Alternatively, it's built for a different gear set. Trying to play Scourge as a power build is just flat out a bad idea. But condi damage or as a support hybrid? Now that's where it truly shines.
What is your favorite Profession and Elite Specialization? 🔥
Thematically, Mesmer is awesome but Im hesitant. Then there is guardian which is a lot of fun, but highly populated and I only like willbender. Oh! Can't forget about Vindicator, but wait; I don't like the dodge. I know, I love Bladesworn and greatswords so warriors are cool. Hmm maybe not, the gunblade doesn't change at all which is lame and GS is useless in strikes.
As you can see, this is why I come to these videos xD
At the moment: specter.
Never really played thief. And the condi meta build is not that hard to play.
I'm an elementalist as always bro =D Anyways, I'm currently using reaper in pvp and yesterday, someone pm'ed me to not join rank if I'm using reaper coz its weak. I told him that its my account and I can play whatever I want to play and he said I'm selfish lol...Toxic players shouldn't play this game at all seriously so I blocked him...no one should dictate to anyone what to use...reaper can survive even against 3 people in my experience, I think he didn't know that... :(
Engi and Mesmer and ele…. and necro…. I think you know what I’m coming to 😅
Bladesworn was all I hoped for an End of Dragons elite spec. But the Vindicator surprised me too. So those are my two mains atm
Hello, this was a very nicely made video of all the professions and their abilities. i been playin gw2 10 years and main necro. right now enjoyin the scourge plaguedoctors
Sounds great! Good luck! :D
This is a work of art! Thank you for taking the time!
Thank you very much!
“Class in WoW = jobs in FFXIV = professions in GW2”
My brain is scrambled 😵💫
I feel you hahaha! They should have a universal name for it!
Is it just me, or are some of these elite specs just blah and boring?
Still multiple classes that I don't use any elite spec on cause I don't like any
You like none of them? Try to pick a profession you like and then roll with the Elite Spec that is given to you!
@@Kyosika I have 10 character slots... 1 for each profession.
At least 2 of them I'm still using a core build (no elite spec).
Thanks for the video mate. A friend of mine and I both got into gw2 recently (even tho I tried it a year ago and bought the expansion in the thought id play it more, which I didnt). This is a great profession and elite specialization guide, precise but informative. I just started playing 2 days ago, and as a range/mage mmorpg player together with this guide I've got an idea on which profession and elite specialization to try and decide what to main without having to try all of it just to drop it at some point. Thank you so much for this video.

Just got back into the game this week and being away for so long trying to think ahead to what I’d want to specialize in made me reroll to a mesmer thanks to the video. Might not be meta but seems to be pretty fun so far. Appreciate the video and the time it took to make it. New sub here. Thanks again.

Fantastic video! Gonna share this with my friends who are new to the game.
Awesome, thank you! Sharing helps the channel and the video a lot! So that is very much appreciated!
Lovely video, will revisit this quite often I think. My starters were Ele and Mesmer but after returning a few days ago I had no idea about any specs cause they weren’t there when I played last. So many specs I like! Thank you, liked n subbed ❤

This is a great summary of all the professions. Great video.
Much appreciated!
Thank you for your work and the detailed explanation of all professions!
Right now I am stuck choosing between a Guardian, Ranger or Mesmer .... off I am hopeless in choosing :D
Glad you like them! All three are good! My Personal favorite is Guardian! But pick whatever you like!
Amazing and most detailed video i have seen. Ty! I'm new in the game and this video help me a lot.
Glad to hear it!

quality explanation of all the classes
Amaaaaziinnggg comment! Thank you so much!
I am going to try this game out today. I had no idea what I wanted to play, so I thank you for this video. I think I want to give a thief a shot. Never played a thief/ rogue before in an MMO so I’m nervous, but with the expansions I can become a dead eye and that looked cool. I will have to watch more of your videos now. Thank you again for the video.
You got it Tofu! How is the Thief? :)
I had really big problem with choosing ani Elite spec for my characters do im glad i saw your video you did a really good job and i want to thank you for that
Glad this one helped!
Great video! Having hit level cap on my necro I've hit a bit of a wall so trying out various alts though not settled on one and undecided between Guardian Engineer or Mesmer but maybe I just need to try them all out :)
Happy to hear that! Did you manage to pick already? Personally I'm more of a Mesmer fan but definitely try them all out and see what fits you!
I am really thankful for this video! So many awesome Professions.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nicely done video, you are very knowledgable of the game and classes, thanks for the info although im still unsure which class to play, you made every class look incredible lol
Much appreciated!
Great video! , i will download and start the journey now :D ,ty Kyosika !
You got this! Thanks!
Thanks for all the info i was struggling between Ranger and Elementalist,
Glad I could help! You made your choice? :)
@@Kyosika Yes i will follow the Ranger seems more fun for me, sadly GW2 has the tendency to make all classes melee
I am just returning from years and years away, this video is super helpful for me to find out what changed and what's new! Thanks!
You're so welcome!
Glad this video made it back. It's a very good resource. Even after 5 years in game, this video still gave me new information and helped me sharpen my skills.
Happy to have it back and receive comments like this. Thanks for watching! 😊
I just started playing yesterday.
Thank you! 😁
Have fun!
wow great video. It helps me a lot to come back in GW2. thank you!

I hope the YT algorithm puts your vid at the top. Easy to understand and digest, and makes me want to try out (almost) all of the classes!
