  • Nissan needs a halo truck to compete for attention in the ever growing truck market. With all the attention the Titan Warrior concept received the Nissan brand was never able to capitalize on it. The brand knows how to build amazing sports cars with the iconic Z and GTR models but what would happen if Nissan took the truck market by storm with a 400 horse power Frontier.
    The 2021 Nissan Frontier is about to drop and adding the Nismo brand with a twin turbo could help make it a huge splash
    On todays show Dave takes a look where Nissan could go with the new Nissan 400 z and potential Nismo Frontier.

    I see an opportunity for them to put out a desert runner truck that competes with the Raptor, TRX, and ZR2, but to offer something that the others do not. If they did a Nismo model, did a nice factory Titan swap with Titan Icon UCA’s and 2.5” remote reservoir shocks and remote reservoir rears, that would be a nice start... the thing that would seal the deal and develop hype would be to put the 3.0TT engine in, but pair it with a 6 speed manual! The closest thing to that in the market would be a manual TRD Tacoma, but those are underpowered. None of the other desert trucks offer a manual trans.
    Nissan really needs this Frontier to have at least one detail or option that sets it apart from the competition. Otherwise, I’m afraid all of the journalists will call the Frontier “solid, but 6 years behind schedule”.

    I just sold my travel trailer so sad to say but I don’t really need my XD anymore, I would be interested in trading to a Frontier if it was more Raptor like. I think 400hp desert runner to compete with the Ranger Raptor ( because you know it’s eventually coming to North America’s) would have me giddy as a school girl, I. Wouldn’t be able to get to my favourite dealer ( Chatham Nissan ) fast enough!! Come on Nissan, get a set of nuts and stop teasing with concept trucks and smash your competitors!!

    Can't fault a fella for dreaming because God knows I've done it too many times to count. But if Nissan does anything wild with the Frontier engine it'll more than likely be a supercharged version of the 3.8L. Less complicated, less expensive, less heat and all the power and torque Nissan would ever be likely to try and squeeze out of the 3.0 twin turbo. And all with a larger displacement number that looks better to truck guys. It could go in everything from the Frontier to a Terra like SUV, the Pahtfinder or even the Titan and Armada as a second engine choice. I forgot to mention that given the VQ40 weighs somewhere around 370 pounds we can estimate the VQ38 would weight just about the same so with supercharger, intercooler and plumbing it would still come in somewhere around 50 pounds less than the almost 490 pound VR30DDTT engine. Less weight and the same power with more linear delivery is always better. The VR30 will likely remain for cars. But there's always a chance that Nissan is contemplating the demise of it's V8 and will pursue current turbo forced induction fashion led by Ford and soon to be followed by Toyota. But I doubt Nissan would put the same engine in a truck that they put in their sports car. Especially when it's a small displacement V6. Sure, one can argue that Ram is doing the same with the TRX and Ford is rumored to be considering the GT500 engine for the Raptor but those are big honking V8's. People are okay with big V8's in their trucks even if the brands cars have the same basic motor. Not so sure a 3.0L V6 would be received the same way.
    Now, one thing to consider when talking about a Halo car or truck is that no one is selling a lot of trucks based on the introduction of a Halo truck. All the manufacturers who have one or are making one were already selling a ton of their regular trucks anyway. The success of their garden variety trucks allows them to produce a Halo truck, not the other way around. Ford doesn't need a Raptor and if you look at sales numbers, F-150 sales haven't increased dramatically since the Raptors introduction. Instead, it's just the version of an F-150 roughly 50,000 people a year buy instead of another version of the F-150. Chevy's ZR2 and Toyotas TRD midsizers don't move the needle in and of themselves. They are simply part of brands that were already selling reasonably well in the Colorado and insanely well in the Tacoma. Ram trucks have been gaining market share for years without the TRX and for all the hype don't expect Ram to overtake Chevy on the regular for second place in truck sales because the TRX is coming out. I'm not opposed to Nissan building some crazy version of the Frontier but if for whatever reason the garden variety Frontier doesn't sell then introducing a balls out Nismo version won't change that.
    Tim said something to the effect that people don't cross shop vehicles in the nice and tidy categories manufactures like to put them in an auto writers like to judge them by. If a particular truck meets someones needs and is the right price then it gets bought whether that's a mid size or a full size. Where things get squirrelly is when you start to push the price into that crossover region. Put a fifty five thousand dollar mid size truck against a fifty thousand dollar full size truck and ninety five percent of folks are going to buy the full size for less money unless there is some extremely compelling reason to do otherwise. For things I intend to abuse I buy as cheaply as possible and do the necessary mods myself, so there isn't any truck, no matter how well equipped from the factory, I'd pay fifty plus grand for if the purpose of that truck was to take a beating off road. I'm not against Nissan bringing a wild ride to the truck market especially if it helps the basic truck get better but trucks are still just utility vehicles to me. For me, showing off and extreme performance still falls to the world of cars. I'm the one in a hundred who actually would buy the truck without the leather seats or the 12" screen. If the seven speed is actually more reliable then give me that instead of the smoother nine speed. And if tuning the engine twenty horsepower lower means another fifty thousand miles of trouble free service and two more miles per gallon then do that for me as well. On the other hand, if Nissan wanted to give me the truck I could dream up, well, I don't think anyone who wanted and could afford such a vehicle would be disappointed. I guess it's just the difference in what I'd buy with my money versus what I'd buy with someone else's money! Lol.

  • @Wiggy321

    Ok so I'd double dip; I'm doing both the V8 and V6TT. The truck market is huge. The more variety the better. There are customers that will spend 60k for a specialty truck. My thought is the Dessert Runner get the V6TT and a Nismo Terra truck going balls out with a manual option, V8, with a space cab even if it's for a year. Nissan needs buzz and this might do it. That's where you could offer options like suspension, a supercharger, bars etc. and make they money in financing.
    Why a manual, because Ford isn't offering one. Give it a crawl gear

    I would never pay that much for a midsize truck that's just nuts. I'm more interested in the torque specs and being able to access that torque at a much lower RPM which I think boosting can help I would be interested in the pro-4x trim having a boosted motor hitting max torque at 2500 instead of 4400 which the 3.8 has. When you look at the twin turbo Navara that thing is hitting its Max torque well under 2,000 RPMs but the horsepower is less than 200 but still has a lot of pulling power torque is what counts on a truck. Straight line acceleration it's not important for me. I don't understand trucks that have 500 horsepower. There's a market for that but it's not really practical.

    • @NissanPodcast
      @NissanPodcast  Před 3 lety

      Hard to rate torque of a petrol to diesel though. Who would have thought people would pay near 100k for a truck but Ford GMC and RAM all have them near that mark. Wait till Ford drops a Ranger Raptor and it’s 60k..Jeeps new v8 Rubicon will be in the 80s
      Sadly we are all being out priced with mew trucks

    • @HiPlains1
      @HiPlains1 Před 3 lety +1

      @@NissanPodcast another example is the petrol 2.3 that's used in the US based Ranger. That thing hits its torque at a much lower RPM and has decent tow ratings. Like I said boosting should help with torque regardless if it's diesel or gas. Nissan really needs to get serious about putting a boosted motor in the frontier just to future-proof it. Once Ford puts the 2.7 in the Bronco based Ranger it's all over.

      @@NissanPodcast yes the displacement on the 2.3 does have its limitations but I reckon they're going to put that 2.7 at some point and that's really going to be a monster.
