I heard a story somewhere that a bunch of American special forces guys were waiting at a compound for the SAS to show up to assist with a high profile assault. All the Americans were big muscle bound guys with tons of gear and the latest tech. Later on a small group of average looking british guys rolled up in plane clothes and basic equipment smoking cigarettes. The CO of the U.S guys said "we are expecting the infamous S.A.S, are they on the way?" One of the British guys casually said back "Yeah that's us" Then they geared up and said "we're gonna go on a reckie" (short for reconnaissance) came back in the early hours of the morning and said "it's all sorted now, cheers fellas" and left again. 😂
The bloke that taught me to SCUBA dive I found out years later had been in the SAS in the 70s and early 80s. He was the most unassuming guy you'd ever meet, no ego and no crazy stories to boast about. What I did remember about him though was he was just tough. No physical task was too difficult, he took us diving in some crazy places, lugging heavy equipment for hours to get into some remote dive spot and he was years older than us and he was always at the front leading the way. Now I know what he'd been in his younger years you could just see he was built differently from a normal person.

They're basically specialists in their own fields of combat insertion and areas of operation. Iranian Embassy siege made the SAS world famous, between that, the Falklands and the Gulf, the MOD cracked down on stories getting out and i suppose the SBS didn't get their time to shine.

If you really want to know who’s the most secret unit in the UKSF then maybe try searching up SRR. they’re probably aren’t not as good as the SAS/SBS but their missions are definitely more secretive considering they focus mainly on covert operations and more stealthy and undercover work.

He was also a recruitment officer towards the end of his service. My Nana was the only one that knew he was in 1 NZ SAS we knew he was in the army and he had something to do with parachuting but that was it. RIP Nana and Pop.❤️

Never worked with the SAS but we did train with the Royal Marines and SBS (special boat squadron). Top of the line troops!!! Best attitude and definitely learned a lot.
One of my mates is in the SAS now, boys an absolute legend. Got offered a scholarship for football (soccer) in the US which he accepted, then his young sister got cancer and it was terminal (15 years old) was horrific. He gave up his scholarship to come home and spend however little time they had left together. Then he joined the Royal Marines (there’s a viral video of him proposing to his fiancé during a parade which is beautiful). Now he sends me pics of him on top of mountains and in the back of choppers (I’m not educated in military equipment and vehicles). Just a great person so he is. There’s no point to my comment, I just wanted the world to know.

And then I asked his brother and he confirmed during a get-together. at no point did I say he told me anything, just that he sends me pics when deployed or on exercise. we were a close group of friends, don't see half them that much anymore. My mates (that serve/d) pointed out his kit wasn't standard issue and whatnot and thats when i got curious. something about facial hair as well but can't remember exactly (was about 6 years ago the convo happened). people had hinted at it without actually saying it so I asked his brother.
It’s not about looking up to them it’s more a “I respect you” thing I notice. they have their own roles and all are a capable fighting force but they are different and the SAS is a army entity for y’all and the SEALs are a water entity by tradition for us even though they don’t do many MAROPS anymore. They learn from eachother in their respective roles and evolve together. It’s become a one team one fight dynamic when rounds start cracking over head and blood must be shed.
Have nothing but respect and admiration for our allies in the US, Canada, Aus and NZ etc.... never liked the arguing of who is better. When you're a soldier and you're soaking wet, cold, hungry, tired and sore, you're not thinking about who's better - you're all equals in that moment I think.
When a guy in a bar tells you he's served in the SAS - he hasn't. Ex SAS will almost never disclose what they were or what they've done, they will be the grey man sat in the corner minding his own business, quietly enjoying his beer.

I once met a group of lads from 22 by complete accident as a kid. I was helping a family members mum move to Hereford... the 3 blokes at the new house were casually carrying fridges and such no problem, 1 man. After a couple of hours we sat down together, I noticed they were using military slang. I asked them if they were soldiers, one of them said yes. I asked if they were based close by. Yes they were. I asked if they wore sandy colour berets, then the biggest one laughed at me and winked. His mate asked me how I knew. I told him I was a cadet. After that, we spent the rest of the day talking about kit and manoeuvres and all sorts. Really lovely fellas, to me it was like meeting david beckham but even then I could tell they were a different breed. Scary guys.
I attempted selection in 02. Couldn't hack it and had to VW. I had the honour of deploying with them in Iraq as part of the SFSG and they were next level. We were paras and tough as nails but they raised the bar. I have the utmost respect for anyone who can endure SAS selection, it's brutal.
We can never thank the Gurkhas enough for their service, they are absolutely incredible guys, the friendliest blokes you'll ever meet, as long as you're on their side
You do know why the English army ties their boot laces a certain way don't you? Cause if youbtie yours crossed or some other way the gurkhas will slit your throat and not look back. It's not their fault you fucked up! My late father knew a few gurkhas and even had a ceremonial kukri .
I agree with the above comment. This nation owes a huge debt of gratitude to the Gurkhas. It's a constant disgrace how our governments treat the ones that the rest of us want taken care of.
The way the ghurkas were treated by the government for years was horrible when they were putting their lives on the line for us. In ww2 one received the Victoria Cross for holding off Japanese with just his rifle and grenades, one of which blew his fingers off iirc. Decades later his grandson was awarded the Victoria Cross for holding off the taliban with his rifle, machine gun, claymores and his canteen. He apparently forgot his ghurka knife that day or would have used it.

You know he's talking straight because he describes them as 22 (two-two) and not the twenty-second (the way civvies and BBC mistakenly refer to them); he also describes their toxic humour. In the UK media, SAS are described either in reverence or disdain. I was luck enough to experience Jungle training in '99 with a couple of SAS personnel attached (including a Sqn Sgt Major). We were all in awe of their mastery of the Ulu... they had forgotten more about soldiering than I will ever know.
British Commandos started it all in WW2. The LRDG in North Africa were extraordinarily tough, plenty of Kiwis in that unit. Hard as nails, resourceful and resilient.
Love this! As a Brit, we know and are very proud of the fact that the greatest and deadliest unit in the world is the SAS. They are the original too. Makes you very proud when you hear other nations confirm this. Mad respect 👌👌👌👌👌👌

One of the large corporations I worked for I found out my boss was ex-SAS. Had the motto on a little plaque in his office. Asked him about it. Said he was in during the Nam years. Said he was in the original HALO jump program. I was still kind of like, "Man, I don't know if this guy's pulling my leg or not." Later that month he has our entire team of about 40 people over to his house for a company Christmas party. In his basement he had his military uniform on a mannequin in a glass case, with his medals and various other interesting items, each with their own story. Several pictures having to do with the HALO program. Then I saw a huge black and white 18x24 landscape portrait of three men. One was obviously general Westmoreland, the other two I couldn't make out and I asked him. He says, "That's me, Westmoreland and my commander at the time of the SAS (don't remember his name). It was in Munich in 72', we were planning a raid on the hotel where the hostages were being held on the tarmac at the airport. It was then I realized this guy was 100% legit. Just the story about the 72' Munich games was just unreal. I think we know how that scenario ended. He's still bitter his regiment had to stand down to the Germans. One of the most interesting guys I'd ever met and it's not even close. Dude had already lived several lifetimes.
If you guys are confused? British special forces did serve in Vietnam in a limited way! Also British forces based in Hong Kong and Singapore often had unofficial R&R in Vietnam!

I remember seeing them at several commands. Utter Profesional killers. What sets them apart from the teams is simple: They train in the North Atlantic Seas. That's f'n scary.
To put into context what Shipley is trying to say about Unit and SAS guys. Figuretively, Seals, rangers, etc.. are professional athletes. Having already exceeded the standards and level work of 99% of 'everyday' people. Now, take the Unit and SAS guys who are Michael Jordans. The superstars/legends of the community. It's insane to think about what these guys are capable of.
Actually SAS guys are not generally big built at all although some may be. They are mostly wiry, very fit, tough and able to endure extreme situations using the least energy. Being big needs a lot of feeding and burns up energy fast which becomes a weakness. SAS are basically lean and extremely mean.

Just as a FYI 22 SAS is the delta/ seal team 6 of the the british SFs. They are absolutely top tier of the top tier. Every tier 1 western special forces are somewhat based on them. Charlie Beckwith the founder of delta got the inspiration after being part of an exchange program with 22 SAS

I know nothing of the SAS personally . I do remember that a special forces unit covertly attacked an oil refinery , where I policed many years ago on one of their training exercises . We were told in briefing that there was a potential threat to the refinery and to patrol and keep an eye open . We saw nothing at all . All we learned was that that they’d planted dummy charges and left . Mind you we were hardly a match were we . 🤷♂️🤣🤣
In Afghanistan a SAS guy asked us if we had any "pent" . we were seabees. we asked him what is "pent" . he said. The stuff you dip a brush in and pent a building with. We said paint and gave him some. But his heavy accent sounded like pent. The british had no filter for their humor and we loved it. I was on a bus with some of them and one yelled out at their female superior officer " show me what ye pee out of" i slid down in the seat. I wouldnt even dare say that to any female let alone an officer.

The SAS had such a difficult start in WW2 and it was a Guards officer David Stirling that really started this non regular clandestine unit off within the Allies of the time and despite numerous set backs militarily and politically they survived and flourished. As a 🇬🇧 and ex military I am very proud of them but I also have so much respect for other countries special forces to. God bless them all in these uncertain times.

Iranian Embassy siege made the SAS world famous, between that, the Falklands and the Gulf, the MOD cracked down on stories getting out and i suppose the SBS didn't get their time to shine.

If you really want to know who’s the most secret unit in the UKSF then maybe try searching up SRR. they’re probably aren’t not as good as the SAS/SBS but their missions are definitely more secretive considering they focus mainly on covert operations and more stealthy and undercover work.

@@lueyR sorry but it's true and have done some research and found out he was involved in over 40 battles from Vietnam to Korea,Borneo, and the first war in Iraq. He was also a recruitment officer towards the end of his service. My Nana was the only one that knew he was in 1 NZ SAS we knew he was in the army and he had something to do with parachuting but that was it. RIP Nana and Pop.❤️

Never worked with the SAS but we did train with the Royal Marines and SBS (special boat squadron). Top of the line troops!!! Best attitude and definitely learned a lot.

One of my mates is in the SAS now, boys an absolute legend. Got offered a scholarship for football (soccer) in the US which he accepted, then his young sister got cancer and it was terminal (15 years old) was horrific. He gave up his scholarship to come home and spend however little time they had left together. Then he joined the Royal Marines (there’s a viral video of him proposing to his fiancé during a parade which is beautiful). Now he sends me pics of him on top of mountains and in the back of choppers (I’m not educated in military equipment and vehicles).
Just a great person so he is.

And then I asked his brother and he confirmed during a get-together. at no point did I say he told me anything, just that he sends me pics when deployed or on exercise. we were a close group of friends, don't see half them that much anymore. My mates (that serve/d) pointed out his kit wasn't standard issue and whatnot and thats when i got curious. something about facial hair as well but can't remember exactly (was about 6 years ago the convo happened). people had hinted at it without actually saying it so I asked his brother.

It’s not about looking up to them it’s more a “I respect you” thing I notice. they have their own roles and all are a capable fighting force but they are different and the SAS is a army entity for y’all and the SEALs are a water entity by tradition for us even though they don’t do many MAROPS anymore. They learn from eachother in their respective roles and evolve together. It’s become a one team one fight dynamic when rounds start cracking over head and blood must be shed.

I once met a group of lads from 22 by complete accident as a kid. I was helping a family members mum move to Hereford... the 3 blokes at the new house were casually carrying fridges and such no problem, 1 man. After a couple of hours we sat down together, I noticed they were using military slang. I asked them if they were soldiers, one of them said yes. I asked if they were based close by. Yes they were. I asked if they wore sandy colour berets, then the biggest one laughed at me and winked. His mate asked me how I knew. I told him I was a cadet. After that, we spent the rest of the day talking about kit and manoeuvres and all sorts. Really lovely fellas, to me it was like meeting david beckham but even then I could tell they were a different breed. Scary guys.
I attempted selection in 02. Couldn't hack it and had to VW. I had the honour of deploying with them in Iraq as part of the SFSG and they were next level. We were paras and tough as nails but they raised the bar. I have the utmost respect for anyone who can endure SAS selection, it's brutal.
My older brother VW'd after tearing his cruciate ligament on the hills phase during winter selection. He left the army soon after.

I agree with the above comment. This nation owes a huge debt of gratitude to the Gurkhas. It's a constant disgrace how our governments treat the ones that the rest of us want taken care of.
The way the ghurkas were treated by the government for years was horrible when they were putting their lives on the line for us.
In ww2 one received the Victoria Cross for holding off Japanese with just his rifle and grenades, one of which blew his fingers off iirc. Decades later his grandson was awarded the Victoria Cross for holding off the taliban with his rifle, machine gun, claymores and his canteen. In the UK media, SAS are described either in reverence or disdain. I was luck enough to experience Jungle training in '99 with a couple of SAS personnel attached (including a Sqn Sgt Major). We were all in awe of their mastery of the Ulu... they had forgotten more about soldiering than I will ever know.

One of the large corporations I worked for I found out my boss was ex-SAS. Had the motto on a little plaque in his office. Asked him about it. Said he was in during the Nam years. Said he was in the original HALO jump program.
I was still kind of like, "Man, I don't know if this guy's pulling my leg or not."
Later that month he has our entire team of about 40 people over to his house for a company Christmas party.
In his basement he had his military uniform on a mannequin in a glass case, with his medals and various other interesting items, each with their own story. Several pictures having to do with the HALO program.
Then I saw a huge black and white 18x24 landscape portrait of three men. One was obviously general Westmoreland, the other two I couldn't make out and I asked him. He says, "That's me, Westmoreland and my commander at the time of the SAS (don't remember his name). It was in Munich in 72', we were planning a raid on the hotel where the hostages were being held on the tarmac at the airport.
It was then I realized this guy was 100% legit. Just the story about the 72' Munich games was just unreal. I think we know how that scenario ended. He's still bitter his regiment had to stand down to the Germans.
One of the most interesting guys I'd ever met and it's not even close. Dude had already lived several lifetimes.

Actually SAS guys are not generally big built at all although some may be. They are mostly wiry, very fit, tough and able to endure extreme situations using the least energy. Being big needs a lot of feeding and burns up energy fast which becomes a weakness. SAS are basically lean and extremely mean.

Just as a FYI 22 SAS is the delta/ seal team 6 of the the british SFs. They are absolutely top tier of the top tier. Every tier 1 western special forces are somewhat based on them. Charlie Beckwith the founder of delta got the inspiration after being part of an exchange program with 22 SAS

I know nothing of the SAS personally . I do remember that a special forces unit covertly attacked an oil refinery , where I policed many years ago on one of their training exercises . We were told in briefing that there was a potential threat to the refinery and to patrol and keep an eye open . We saw nothing at all . All we learned was that that they’d planted dummy charges and left . Mind you we were hardly a match were we . 🤷♂️🤣🤣
In Afghanistan a SAS guy asked us if we had any "pent" . we were seabees. we asked him what is "pent" . he said. The stuff you dip a brush in and pent a building with. We said paint and gave him some. But his heavy accent sounded like pent. The british had no filter for their humor and we loved it. I was on a bus with some of them and one yelled out at their female superior officer " show me what ye pee out of" i slid down in the seat. I wouldnt even dare say that to any female let alone an officer.
That guy must’ve had a rough time getting out and finding out how civilians react to that talk.

The SAS had such a difficult start in WW2 and it was a Guards officer David Stirling that really started this non regular clandestine unit off within the Allies of the time and despite numerous set backs militarily and politically they survived and flourished. As a 🇬🇧 and ex military I am very proud of them but I also have so much respect for other countries special forces to. God bless them all in these uncertain times.
