Yeah, but they already had a history with Jets hockey in Winnipeg. I agree that there is enough time for Utah to come up with a name, but it’s not as simple as it was when the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg.

I would vote for the Utah Gulls. The official state bird of Utah is the California Gull. That one state's bird carries another state's name is odd, but there's a reason behind that choice. In the early days of settlement, they were supposedly afflicted by a locust swarm that threatened to destroy all of their crops and starve the people to death. They prayed for deliverance, and a flock of gulls arrived in the area and ate the locusts. Those gulls were later named California Gulls by the ornithological community. I don't know for certain that these events happened, but they are part of Utah legend. The account is connected to the Mormon church, and maybe neither the city nor the NHL wants to lean into Salt Lake City's Mormon heritage that much. I don't live in Utah, and I'm not a member of the LDS Church. However, I think the legend is a neat aspect of Utah heritage. I think Utah Gulls would work very well as a team name because of that connection to the past. I might not ever get to attend a game, but I would consider becoming a fan and buying a jersey. A name that would fit better with Utah's modern tourism industry would be Utah Canyoneers. While we think of canyons as being more a part of the topography of southern Utah, the entire state has some big canyons. Many people like going to Utah to participate in the sport of canyoneering which is the fancy name for hiking and exploring canyons. I could be happy enough with the Utah Pioneers, but that name wouldn't excite me as much. The other names all seem clichè.
