- In this video, I answer some common questions about flying with your RC cars, drones, transmitters, batteries, etc. on commercial airlines and share some tips for doing so safely within regulations! I've done this twice with my RC crawlers with no issues.
These recommendations largely apply to traveling domestic in the US. Please also check with your airline, TSA and the FAA for additional information. I've included some more resources below.

Hi, useful advise here, As an ex Airline employee, I can confirm that all that is being said here is true and is true also with the other non American Airlines like Emirates. With reference to the battery, I had checked when I was getting my mum to purchase my Mavic 2 back in 2019, it should not be more than 6000 mAh for the battery to be allowed on board, With regards to Nitro RC, I think it is a NO NO if there's fuel residue, maybe if it's new but check that no fuel was added and also check with your airline, but for me I will never bring one. Flammable articles are automatically NOT allowed as carry on or check in, on Any Airline.
Thanks, appreciate your insight! Phew, glad my research was legit!!
Thanks. What is the protocol to follow in case a lipo starts to smoke or actually catch fire?. One can only be prepared for the worse.
As for nitro I would think is safe if the fuel and tank is removed and show a new tank to installed at your destiny. Idk
@713Ace Rc well if your lipo battery terminal is properly isolated plus it's in a non flammable container there is no risk. Always good to thoroughly check your batteries before packing it. If you notice any defects better to not bring it.
Yes. I agree but there’s gotta be a worse case canario and I was wondering if there is a practice drill to handle such situation instead of putting everyone in panic.
@713Ace Rc well since you put it that way, as a passenger yourself, there isn't any so called protocol for passengers. You will see smoke, but there is some sort of smoke detection system on the aircraft in the overhead bins, the cabin crew will be the ones who will take action find the source of the fire and put in out with the on-board fire extinguishers. It is part of their job after all and they will be trained for it. So far I haven't heard of any exploding batteries since the UPS 747 Cargo aircraft disaster in Dubai. Which reminds me airlines class batteries as ELI (Lithium polymer batteries like laptop and even RC batteries that are allowed If it is
I remember the first time I flew with my FPV gear. I had 20 lipos in my carry on and I thought there was no way I wasn’t getting my bag searched. Both flights they let me right through with zero issues. Keeping in mind drones have a lot of weird electronics and tools and no one questioned it at all.
Oh cool - good to know!

Always interesting to watch.
Have a good end of the year and a happy new year.😄💕💯👍
Such a smooth operator. Always a pleasure watching!
Thanks RC Girl, that's some good information for us all to know.
Excellent ! Haven't seen this topic covered elsewhere.
Great thread. I never thought about flying with my RC gear, but this really helps in case I do. Thank you!👍🏾
Terrific advice, thanks 😊
Nice! Very helpful thanks
Now THAT was an informative video. Thanks for your research!
Thanks! Thought it would be useful for the holiday travel
Great information thanks
Thanks! Very useful video 👍
Your new wall looks great in the background!
thanks! Yeah I love it all lit up ☺
great info. thank you!
Useful info!
Watched anyway just for curiosity. Some things were surprising, and some made sense - taking out radio batteries and covering lipo ends.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for video
Hey! @TheRCGirl Thanks so much for this. I'm In Canada however some of this is very helpful. I almost lost all my Hex hand drivers at the check security because they were too long. (6" +over). Ended up going back and checking them last minute. Cheers!
Ohh good to know about the tools! Yeah, checking them seems the best just to be sure. :)
Great video. I was actually researching about this a couple of days ago. I didn’t find much, so video helped me a lot for my trip abroad in a couple of weeks. Thanks and happy holidays.
Very cool - glad I was able to help. Where you headed and what RC are you taking?
I’m taking my family for a 5 week vacation to Philippines. I’d love to take my large scale, but for now I’ll be taking my minis. Losi Mini B Pro and my son’s new Rlaarlo AM X12.
Tip for international travel with batteries - print out a copy of the battery Wh limits for each of the airlines (they can differ between carriers) you are flying with, then you have them on hand if there is any confusion at the security check points (this has happened to me, but I had them on hand luckily).
good idea
Thanks a lot 😘😘😘😘
Great info thanks 👍💚🙏🎄🤷
Yes
Never even gave that a thought. Looks like you have a lot of awesome toys! I just destroyed my eflight commander learning to do stunts. Low inverted pass gone wrong. Pilot error of course lol. I removed the electronics, motor, and control rods and glued the wings back on. Going to set it on top of my garbage can for the nosey neighbors to have something new to gossip about 😆 definitely getting another commander
Thanks for making a recent video!
Thanks for sharing your informations. Most are the same as here in Europe. I keep only one rule, I take all my batteries with me in the carry-on. Don't want to explain or discuss if it's lithium or nickel or what else.
great info, thank you very much for sharing...friend ;-)
Very good question. If anyone was going an a flight with RC’s I don’t think I personally would even think about it till it was last minute. Can you imagine having to leave your RC gear behind. I’d be freaking out. They don’t even want you to use your phone because of the interference so I can see why lipo batteries etc. RC gear would be regulated. What about just making the plane a remote operated one. I can definitely see that happening in the future.
Back in the mid 90's i bought a couple of new OS Max engines in japan along with a heavily used gas car in my luggage (no fuel). I didn't have any issues but did get a annoyed look from the pilot on the commuter plane (LA to San Diego) when i pulled one out and said he could borrow it if his turboprop failed...lol
Great video and insight! I wanted to take my SCX24 to Cancun last year but I decided against it because I didn't have time to check with the airline! I wish I would have known! 🤦♂️
next time!
@@RCGirl Yep! Thanks for the information! 🙂
Very helpful, Thanks 🙏!!
I plan on flying in February, Thanks again 🙏
I’m flying to Europe to see my daughter, I’ll let you know what their rules are when I get back. That is if they even let me take them.
My daughter did say you have to have a permit to fly a drone in the Czech Republic , and in Holland.
I have checked the exact same thing myself and I concluded it would be fine as stated by the airlines. The main issue I see is fitting a 1:10 scale truck into your hand luggage within the allowable dimensions. Maybe you have a chance with a buggy or a Capra style crawler but anything with a truck body is going to be a challenge dimensionally.
I've put a scx10.2 jeep Cherokee in a duffle bag, with body, wheels off. And once with a GS02F Buffalo pickup. Fit fine!
@@RCGirl Yes, it is important to choose your bag carefully to maximise space. Backpacks generally don't work but a duffle bag is ideal. Also, check your specific airline as hand luggage (cabin bag) dimensions vary. I use KLM in Europe which has maximum dimensions of 55x35x25cm.
About the personal use caviat how would they know or care what you do with the batteries after you leave the airport
I've always thought about this. Thank you for sharing your experience! Will you share a link to your battery connector silicone caps? I found some on Amazon but yours looks better! 😎
sold by Hobbyking but they are always out of stock! 😐 hobbyking.com/en_us/xt60-charged-discharged-battery-indicator-caps-5-pairs.html
@@RCGirl awesome! Thank you 😊
Any tips for flying with 1:6 scales? I have an SCX6. Thanks for the helpful vid!
You'll probably have to check it
how about TRX4M battery ?
Uh yeah, that sounds pretty similar to the rules in Canada. 👍
Yeah many things here probably apply to international travel too, but I only verified with the US regs so didn't want to overpromise anything!
How could an rc crawleh like trx4 defender fits in hand bag ?! Some airlines only allow small hand bags
Its strange that they allow so much of batteries into the flight ha ha. But this is helpful. I'm hoping to travel and splurge on some RC as that would be the fastest way to get something I like in my hands as I want it lol
What if I have 2 106.56Wh batteries and my other batteries fall below, can I still take all of them ? I’ll be taking 2 (106,57Wh) and 6 that are below 100wh
Are RC tank allowed in filght
Where can I find the battery XT60 caps for the batteries?
Hobbyking but they are always out of stock! 😐 hobbyking.com/en_us/xt60-charged-discharged-battery-indicator-caps-5-pairs.html
When I was 15, I took my hornet with my to visit my best friend that moved to Oregon. When I was getting everything scanned, there was no problems until they opened my backpack to find these red sticks with a sticker on them called "Dynamite". This was nothing more than the brand on these cheap 1200mAh nicads. Well, lets just say it didn't go well for young me. Fast forward many years and I travel often for work. I still haul that hornet with me everywhere except china. Customs there is needlessly hard to get through and I dont want to risk it though I do want a video of my on the great wall with it....what could possibily go wrong.
That's funny about the dynamite batteries. I have a few dynamite lipos and motors haha
Hello. Is it possible to bring gas rc boat or car in an international flight?
No gas RC are allowed unless it's new and hasn't ever had any gas/nitro fuel in it.
So do batteries go in carry-on and RC in big checked in? Also should you tell them that the stuff is in there so that you don’t think you’re a terrorist 😱
I’m flying Southwest Airlines with an axial SCX 10 two my batteries are a XC3 which are a weird plug and they’re 5000 million batteries am I allowed to bring those? If not, I can just bring the crawler but if so, what do I have to do for the crawler.
Any lithium batteries need to be in a CARRY-ON only. The crawler (with no battery) can go in a checked bag or as a carryon. The main thing is that no Li batteries are allowed in the cargo hold of airplanes.
Can you travel with nmhi battery’s
Ah good question. I should have addressed that. According to TSA, "Dry Cell rechargeable batteries: Batteries such as Nickel Metal hydride (NiMH), Nickel Cadmium (NiCad), etc. Allowed in carry-on baggage in equipment or spares as well as in checked baggage."
If conditions are right...
What’s happening? If I’m travelling in an Arab country? Is it still allowed?
Because I need to know because I have RC cars and a drone
I find it crazy that they allow Lipo batts on the plane but can't have a 6 ounce shampoo. LOL
Right? It's kind of shocking. 😬 Airlines must have chemical fire extinguishers or something on board for that.
Hey could I bring my rc plane from India to the United States
Yes you can but would check with the airline to make sure that they allow it
Hey there so I am going to be traveling to Greece with my family this er and I'm thinking of bringing my Traxxas Slash 4x4 and I'm wondering if I can do it on Air Canada. It has 2 lithium polymer batteries, a controller, tools and parts and all that good stuff.
Can I still bring it with me or no?
that's what this entire vid is about
