- I built this bike up to race Mammoth Tuff 2023. I originally planned on using my Specialized Diverge, but given the terrain and how much more comfortable I feel on an MTB, I think this was the right choice. I wanted to go as light as possible, and I think I did a pretty good job as this weighs in at 23.2 lbs, as you see it! I had to film this one by myself, so building and filming was a bit of a project, but I think it came out pretty cool. The full build list is below.

You could be me, bc I bought the Chisel Comp as well 2 wks ago, and love it probably just as much!😄 Only 2 minutes in, I already dig this vid, bc Jim Bob shows proper details thru the close-ups, very instructive! The frame is really beautiful, and very worthwhile of upgrading (or custom build like here).

my chisel was below 9kg and with rigid fork close to 8kg.

Love your video. Chill. Does the Chisel have the same geometry specs of other entry level UCI XCO bikes, (hardtail) as say the Canyon Esteem CF or Spec. Epic? I want to buy an entry level UCI XCO type MTB. No eBikes for me.

Thinking of building one of these - I've heard the frame clearance is tight with 4 piston brake callipers though - did you have any problems?

What headset did you use? Mainly I’m wondering what the long bolt inserted up through the bottom of the steer tube was. My control SL wheels should be here some day, and I’ll see what the weight is when I install them.
Just the headset that comes with the frame. What you’re asking about is the specialized steer tube swat tool that I use instead of a star nut and top cap. Also my wheels with tires weigh 4lbs
@@brakeforsnakes Put my Control SL wheels on yesterday (Shimano MS + Centerlock) and did a 30 mile river path ride. I feel less fatigued than riding my Road+ bike with 650x47c slicks, so I'll call it a success to making my Chisel my new gravel & XC bike. I just need to upgrade some other parts to lighten up now.

Thinking about getting a chisel just for keeping fit and commuting is the gear ratio enough to go as fast as I like downhill ?
That’s dependent on what gearing you put on it. Its standard mtb gearing I’d assume so the same as any other mtb you have

It’s held up great through many races and miles. Zero downside to the longer fork

Why the aluminum frame choice instead of carbon looking at components I don’t think cost is a problem?
Because the cost to benefit doesn’t make sense on that
The aluminium chisel is only 1.3 kg lighter than a lot of carbon frames. A very light carbon is around .9 kg. Some people like myself prefer aluminium to carbon. Different ride and your better off if the bike is crashed. The chisel also has a lifetime warranty on the frame.
Im looking to but this frame, in the video its difficult to tell if the frame has a gloss lacquer coating, does it have one or is the finish more matt? Many thanks.
It’s kind of in between actually. It’s matte in terms of finish but looks very shiny

@@brakeforsnakes I have a '21 chisel. I want to upgrade forks, but I think 110mm is max recommended from specialized. I'm sure it could survive 120mm though. Can't decide on sid sl, sid, or fox 34 sc.

I like to shit myself at the cost of some of the parts on that list. I almost took a Chisel Comp over a Trek X-caliber 9.
