I was targeting cards with at least 3-4 gigs of vram for modern games that need it. You can always get away with a 2 gig card as well but it just depends what games you’re playing!
Sata can only provide a max of 54 watts when converted into PCIe 6pin or 8 pin that's not a very smart idea unless running some weak as crap like a 6500xt or a 1650 that requires a 6 pin. so 75 watts from the slot and 54 from the adaptor = 129, But allot of the newer cards will not peg the slot for the 75 and will try to peg the 6pin for 75 or 8 pin for up to 150 it's a dangerous road depending on the card. Some optiplex's have a 6pin pcie so that could be safe to adapt to 8pin 150W if you know the full power draw of the card worst case would be lower then 150~
as a first time builder this information is priceless. I am saving up for the 9020, in my country PC experts take advantage and everything even old computers are expensive. It will take me all year to Buy the 9020 and a Graphics card as well. I have been using an old acer laptop since 2014 and I have no idea that I can build something playable. I've never owned a console or a pc thats able to play games. this will be the first time I experience a game in 1080p. the game I want to play is genshin impact/ I have been playing on my laptop but its Haswell i5 3rd gen. Intel HD4000. I've been playing on Low setting all my life. Even Half life 2.... I am actually a little nervous but it's time I try.

got a 9010 for $90 on ebay and a rx480 for $160 from a guy off marketplace. It was working this week and I took the gpu out to reapply thermal paste. Now my budget build wont boot. Amber flashing codes say my motherboard went bad. Ordered a new one off ebay for $55. Hopefully it fixes my problem. Also tested my PSU with amultimeter and that seems to work no problem.
Thanks for this info for the 9010 Optiplex computers, RA. I am planning on switching to PC from xbox sometime this year or next, but need a decent graphics card to play games like Apex or the next-gen Tomb Raider games.
Thanks for this video. I recently purchased a 9020 for 75 bucks, with an i7 4770 CPU. The plan is to upgrade it for office and studio (Presonus) work, and occasional gaming (I'm thinking of having a go at Skyrim). I had been looking at AMD GPUs, particularly the RX 580, but if, as you've so clearly shown, I'll need to both upgrade the power AND modify the case, then I'd definitely be better off budget-wise to go with one of the NVIDIA cards. If I don't need to upgrade the PSU, then I can afford to pay a bit more for the GPU. Add to that the cost of 32G of RAM and a good SSD, and I should have a good all-rounder for about 300 dollars. 👍👍👍😏😏😏

Nice video. Very imformative. I am currently transforming my 9020 with the i7 4770. Ordered an RX 580 8GB alongside a PSU upgrade and the 24 to 8 pin adapter. I won't be using it long as I ordered an R5 3600, new mobo and ram but wanted to know if the 24 to 8 pin adapter will have any effect on the power output. Should I account for it and opt for a higher power PSU? At the moment I ordered a Corsair 500W.
Bob Huskenson so if you’re planning on using an rx580, you’ll need to upgrade the power supply for sure! The 290w isn’t enough for how much power that draws.
hi RA Visuals i just got a Optiplex 7020 and it did not come with built in wifi card what would be the best one to get and are you able to instell a rtx 2070 or 2080 in to the Optiplex 7020 ?
I've got a question if anyone cares to answer. My Dell arrived this morning and for some reason it says 7020 on the case instead of 9020. Is there anything i should be concerned about? i7-4790 CPU 3.6GHz. 32GB RAM. 1TB SSD. The only difference I can tell right now in the specs is the 7020 maxes out at 16GB and the 9020 allows 32GB ram. I have (4) 8GB ram cards inside the case. Any help would be super awesome. Someone suggested i ask the seller for a small refund due to the mistake in the description.
@@RAVisuals Yes, it does show the 32 gb of ram in windows which is why I'm confused. It might just be that the case is that of a 7020 but the internals are 9020??
@@RAVisuals I ordered a 4790k after I realized my blunder, lol. At the very least, I feel I can take comfort in knowing many of the components I've ordered can be carried over down the road.
@@RAVisuals When they talk about cpu bottlenecks, it just means that it will limit just how much I can do, right? Not that it won't work, it just won't work to its full capacity?
Great details. I have Optiplex 790 with i7 2600 , 16Gb RAM and Nvidia GTX 650. Planning to upgrade to Nvidia GTX 1660Ti along with 500Watt PSU. What do you think?
So the only thing I’d be worries about is bottlenecking that cpu with the 1660ti. Honestly the 1660 is really the furthest you’d want to go with a newer i5/i7 so you may see some loss in performance because of that.
@@RAVisuals I will look to that option to upgrade the CPU , if feasible .But currently I am focusing on the GPU card because I watched couple of videos discussing the performance of i7 2600 with recent games, what do you think?
Is the power supply change necessary for the optiplex to become a gaming pc? Is it possible just to get a graphics card that is low profile? Just wondering lol
To the best of my knowledge, it's not always necessary. What's important is to know the minimum system requirements, including power (pay attention to Watts AND Amps) for the card you intend to buy. I found this out the hard way, buying a GPU that requires a minimum of 300W and 20A, while my 3010's power supply only provides 275W and 12A. It never occurred to me to check beforehand. 🙄🙄🙄
the particular offer im planning to get is a 9020 with i5 4670 3.00Ghz and 8gb ram and it's roughly 150 bucks. im thinking of getting it and putting in a gtx 960 (4gb one preferrably) but idk if it'll perfecty fit in (compability) nor am i entirely sure if the price for the pc is a good deal.
I'm doing the exact same thing. I went for the 3020 with the i5-4570 instead. For the GTX960, especially if you have a blower style gpu, you'll need to remove the hdd cage since it's pretty long (it's fairly easy, just use a drill). The price (150) for that pc does seem like a good deal though! I'd snag it. I got my 3020 off Ebay for a similar price.
Great video! Does the evga 1650 super ultra gaming fit the optiplex 3020 without blocking sata ports or the backplate blocking the ram slots. Thanks again for the great content

Hi. Would the GTX1063 and GTX1050ti be good for games up until maybe 2012? All my PC games are older. From the 90s and early 2000s. My newest game is from 2010.
First I want to say, I liked and subbed. I have a Dell OptiPlex 9020- i5-4690 4-core. right now I have no graphics card in and I can run games but the lag is so bad and everything is just not good picture. A great starter card that you can easily find used almost anywhere would be a gtx 1060 3gig model. They still do great in games and fit very easily into an optiplex with a simple adapter for power.

Rn in 2023 (im a highschool student btw) Im planning on doing 100% what u do in this video and Im just gonna upgrade it in the future...hope u see my comment even in 2023 from this video...
the best lazy option is a gtx 1650 it will fit with ease, and it dont require any psu upgrade and the better is it performs like a rx 570
very true!
NVIDIA GPUs listed in the video:
GTX 1070 8gb
GTX 1660 6gb
GTX 1650 Super 4gb
GTX 1650 4gb
GTX 1060 6gb
GTX 1060 3gb
GTX 1050ti 4gb
I have an Optiplex 9010, currently running with an EVGA GTX 960 SC 2gb.
Some optiplex's have a 6pin pcie so that could be safe to adapt to 8pin 150W if you know the full power draw of the card worst case would be lower then 150~
I just can't believe the change in pricing and availability since this was made. GTX 1650 Super is $350 on Amazon currently, I mean holy shitballs.
seriously though....unreal
as a first time builder this information is priceless.
Its really great that these systems can provide you with a way to get into more PC gaming! There's quite a few types of system out there similar to this but it really just depends on what youre looking to do!

i have a 3010 with a rtx2060 and i7-3770 500w power supply 16 gb of ddr3 ram and 1tb ssd things a monster for a optiplex
I removed the hard drive cage bought an adapter that lets you mount multiple hard drives in the disc drive slot put them there and then fitted a full size 1060 6gb
the optiplex had an ssd added in already when I got it
I upgraded the ram from 8gb to 16gb fun fact I learned with this 1600mhz is the max speed consider that when buying ram cause I bought 1866mhz and I can't fully utilize its speed
I also chose to upgrade the power supply as I didn't feel safe running the pc on 290w alone
added a full size 1060 6gb (which is why I removed the hard drive cage so it fit went full size cause its what I already had)
very nice! I'm sure its a great gaming PC now!

got a 9010 for $90 on ebay and a rx480 for $160 from a guy off marketplace. It was working this week and I took the gpu out to reapply thermal paste. Now my budget build wont boot. Amber flashing codes say my motherboard went bad. Ordered a new one off ebay for $55. Hopefully it fixes my problem. Also tested my PSU with amultimeter and that seems to work no problem.
dang! sorry to hear that man. silver lining is that you were able to find the parts you needed at least!
Just found a 9020 in a dumpster so these tips are gonna be really useful. Cheers!
lucky!!
Thanks for this info for the 9010 Optiplex computers, RA. I am planning on switching to PC from xbox sometime this year or next, but need a decent graphics card to play games like Apex or the next-gen Tomb Raider games.
the optiplexs are definitely a great way to get into pc gaming without shelling out a ton of cash! I hope it goes well!
Just one question, are the cards you recommended all PCIe 3.0 x16? 🤔🤔🤔
I'm using an older optiplex 3020
I7-4790k 4.0ghz *Upgraded*

Wow I'm just reading my novels with sound effects and graphics. Streamlabs is using 40-70% without a graphics card. I got the 9020.

Possibly something a bit more new. These OptiPlex's that I'm showing aren't going to have that capability
@@RAVisuals Thank you :) I was thinking it would be possible with an adapter but I want to stay safe and go with something that has a bit more power, might just repair my pc though.
do you think an i7 4790 would bottleneck a MSI GeForce GTX 1650 D6 VENTUS XS OC? it only uses 75W and only needs PCIe power, unlike other 1650s

Which GPU should I use in 3020. I need a bit cheap too. What would you suggest ?
depending on the cpu, a gtx 1060 seems like a good choice or even the never 1650 or 1660

Yes you can!
Yeah the 7020 does have the hardware limitation versus the 9020. are you seeing all 32gb of ram in windows?
@@RAVisuals Yes, it does show the 32 gb of ram in windows which is why I'm confused. It might just be that the case is that of a 7020 but the internals are 9020??
@@Blvkbird that’s probably what it is. Unless someone just swapped the case badges by mistake 😂
Sometimes you get confused and order an rtx2060 and 500w psu and hope it somehow works out in your 9020 mt.

I have Optiplex 790 with i7 2600 , 16Gb RAM and Nvidia GTX 650.
Planning to upgrade to Nvidia GTX 1660Ti along with 500Watt PSU.
What do you think?
So the only thing I’d be worries about is bottlenecking that cpu with the 1660ti. Honestly the 1660 is really the furthest you’d want to go with a newer i5/i7 so you may see some loss in performance because of that.
@@RAVisuals
I will look to that option to upgrade the CPU , if feasible .But currently I am focusing on the GPU card because I watched couple of videos discussing the performance of i7 2600 with recent games, what do you think?
@@theogbullseye Thank you alot for suggestion.
what kind of ram should I get for a 9020. Im trying to upgrade
ddr3 1600mhz usually works great!
RA Visuals Compatible with dell optiplex 9020?
the particular offer im planning to get is a 9020 with i5 4670 3.00Ghz and 8gb ram and it's roughly 150 bucks. im thinking of getting it and putting in a gtx 960 (4gb one preferrably) but idk if it'll perfecty fit in (compability) nor am i entirely sure if the price for the pc is a good deal.
