  • I always dreamed of climbing with David. I would watch videos of David climbing with Conrad Anker and say... when I'm 28, David will be 42 and I'll be climbing with him. Sadly, those dreams are now destroyed, as David was killed in an avalanche, alongside Jess Roskelley and Hansjorg Auer. They were climbing the M-16 route on Howse Peak. When I first heard the news on Wednesday, I paused... This can't be real... This wouldn't happen to David. But after many hours, I finally admitted to myself David is gone. We must not remember David as a man who died in an avalanche... but instead remember him as the thoughtful, energetic and motivated person he was. Rest in peace David... may your legacy live on.

Just a few months ago I began watching videos on CZcams of alpinists climbing big mountains. I didn't know who David Lama was. When I first watched a David Lama video on CZcams I was so incredibly amazed that I soon found myself watching every single video of David Lama available on CZcams. I thought "wow, this guy is such a young and talented mountaineer". I soon discovered that he was one of the most talented climbers in the world. His videos were really inspiring to me. I never thought the life and career of such a talented and young climber would end so soon. On his videos David always looked so passionate about climbing, he always looked so calm and in control.
I try to find some meaning out of this big tragedy. To me the big lesson here is to follow your dreams with passion no matter what. To do what you love and to love what you do. Always. It doesn't really matter how long you live as long as what you do in life makes you happy. It is not about how long you live but how much you enjoy what you do in life regardless of your age.
Great lessons by this young and talented climber. Thank you so much David for the inspiration. May you rest in peace.

This is true. Also infuriating to me when chronically/terminally sick people get told it's illegal or wrong to have medically assisted suicide. I refuse to rot away in some hospital bed and I refuse to allow anyone tell me where/how I should die, or that I should never fight my illness. My happy days of climbing, skating, horse riding dancing, being a chef(only to name a few) have long passed. I'm 47 and doubt to see 50. We all need to stop speaking about death like it's a dirty word. LIVE LIFE while you can cause when your body breaks, it sucks 😢

RIP David, Jess and Hansjorg. And heartfelt condolences to the loved ones you leave behind. The mountaineer’s life is 10 times greater than the average person. It’s a series of rich and emotional struggles at the edge of human experience. The mountaineer embraces his (her) passion equally with fear and divine joy. He knows no god but of himself and of nature. He is a fierce athelte and dreamer wielding a sharp blade. When he passes, his life becomes the story of sorrow and legend. At the highest level of commitment, he stands before each monumental task in front of him with stubborn determination; and with his comrades, he thinks not of his fate, but of his boundless freedom with tears of elation. He is accepting that the mountain is neither his friend nor his enemy, and by choosing to climb it he acquiesces that on any day the mountain can take him. Such is the irony and ultimate sacrifice of our sport.
