    Avian ESC Reverse Firmware - Horizon Insider Tech Talk
    Tom Cogswell from the Spektrum Marketing team joins Kyle in this weeks episode of Horizon Insider to discuss the latest firmware update for the Avian ESC family: Reversing motor capability!
    This software, originally found exclusively on the BNF versions of the Night Timber X and the Ultimate 3D, is now available for download (new for November 2020) and can be added to any aircraft running an Avian ESC paired with a Smart enabled receiver. See the video links below to learn how!
    Remember to update the following items in your Smart ecosystem BEFORE attempting to enable this functionality:

    I've tried it on my conscendo advanced, and it's great for dumping energy and shortening the approach, especially if you can't use spoilerons/flaperons. The catch is you have to let the motor stop completely, then throttle up in reverse, otherwise it makes an awful grinding sound. I think it's specific to the motor.

    Did you have to carve any foam out or leave off the plastic vent cover that sits over the Viper's ESC?
    I've considered installing the SMART 80A ESC in the F-16 and Viper for longer flight times based on actual battery voltage, but am concerned about the space. The SMART ESCs look to be about twice the thickness of the stock ESCs while the stock ESCs already look pretty snug. I'm not used to doing foam mods and don't want to do anything to harm the air frames.

    Hi guys. Would this work on the e flite A10? I use an old WW2 runway and it’s short. It would be a deciding factor. I use a DX8 gen 2 transmitter. Does the A10 have the smart ESC? Thanks, Ant

    Kyle...I'm intrigued by your Turbo Timber with the Smart logo on the side. Specifically, what tires did you put on it and did you upgrade the motor/ESC to get that incredible takeoff performance. Thanks

    • @horizonhobby
      @horizonhobby  Před 3 lety +1

      I finally peaked someone's interest! Those wheels/tires are from the Carbon-Z Cub SS, but I did have to modify the struts and axles to accommodate the larger dimensions. The ESC is a Spektrum Smart 60 Avian ESC, motor is stock, but the propeller is the Timber-X two-blade prop (which made most of the difference).

    Clarification on updating esc firmware, do you have to use the stand alone esc programmer first to get it to the version that allows the transmitter to do it?

    • @horizonhobby
      @horizonhobby  Před 3 lety +1

      Keith, the newest batch of ESC's in our warehouse will start shipping with this firmware. However, any pre-existing ESC's will in fact need the update (which requires the programmer).

  • @christiansprojects-cgmanuf1426

    Well, nice... But how about a firmware update to unlock used capacity telemetry readout with non smart batteries? For me, this is the main reason to buy a telemetry-ESC. I would love to buy more avian ESCs but if they won‘t read out the used capacity, then they are pretty much useless because that’s the most important thing to know via telemetry.

    • @charliemarchiony7914
      @charliemarchiony7914 Před 3 lety +1

      No, just because smart ESC's don't really work with a twin setup. If the stock ESC's are Y harnessed together, you could split the two leads over multiple channels for differential thrust, which would also be useful on the water.

      You need to change the "brake" setting to reverse (in the ESC). Also, make sure you assign a channel to Reverse WITHIN the ESC as well.
