This song was co-written by John Deacon and Freddie Mercury. (Mostly John, as you can tell once you get used to how each man structured their songs)
Beautiful song and every single word was true. That band was more than a musical group but they were friends and brothers. They fought like crazy!! They would get in some wicked arguments and fights about everything just like brothers and sisters. They loved one another and the band members as well as his workers at his house, kept his illness secret until after Freddie Mercury decided to tell the world about it himself the day prior to his death. His own bodyguard knew in 1997 and didn’t even tell his own wife! That’s loyalty!

This is such a great song, the members of the band hadn't just been friends they were basically family, they're still mourning Freddie's death in their own unique way.
About the album, originally they started out writing songs for the movie "Highlander" as there were no plans to make another Queen album. During the peocess they wrote a lot of songs and some of them couldn't be used for the soundtrack,just like "Friends will be Friends", so they decided to use them for a Queen album as well as the 5-6 songs they've written for the movie . They added some more lyrics to the existing songs so they are slightly different on the album as they were in the movie. That's how they made the album "A Kind Of Magic".
