In the end a father just wants his daughter to be taken care of. When the man said he owned a house, it all changed quickly into a very good start. His daughter would have a roof over her head from day 1. Thats great news for any parent
Sondra and Elvin were regarded more highly because they were aspiring lawyer and doctor, even tho they had nothing. Dabnis was a maintenance man and was looked down upon, until it was revealed that he owned his own house. Had Vanessa come home with an engineer or a doctor, her parents would not have been that rude and angry, whether they knew about the engagement or not.
