A number of the stories and jokes in the first season were from his routines (actually material would be often based on stories he told in his stand up act or comedy albums even afterwards.) Both Cliff and Claire were largely based upon himself and his wife Camille (both of whom were college educated and had five children, like himself and Camille) - for example Theo having dyslexia is based upon his own child Ennis being dyslexic. It was the number one show 5 of its 8 seasons, and that was due to Cosby.
My fave was also from season 1 where cliff gives Monopoly money to Theo and tries to explain finance to him. Needless to say, Theo ends up broke. Haha
