      Years ago I was cutting down trees that were growing around a pond and I found them in nearly all of the trees. We didn't know what they were,but could see that they were different from the common mouse. Some were tan like a hamster. I don't think that they are a native animal. There was a warehouse that processed seed nearby and I think that they were let go.

    Hi, I think I have a dormouse under my roof. Is it possible? I hear them only during the night and we have hazelnuts in the yard with holes in them. They are quite fast so I really can't see them to make sure. I was thinking to build a nest box and hope for them to move in, is this going to work or not?

      Unfortunately a bit late but: it's best to bait with fresh, ripe fruit and catch with a live trap. If you want to release them again, you should drive several kilometers away from home, otherwise they will come back again.

    At first I was upset about them just capturing and taking this animal out of the wild…but if they really are endangered, then I just hope they’ll give it a good life.

    • @guineapig5858
      @guineapig5858 Před rokem +5

      Can tell you from being in a uni doing conservation science, they are capturing them to breed them and ensure their genetic pool is diverse as they have undergone a bottleneck which results in higher chance of inbreeding and genetic inherited diseases. They have great stable populations so there are currently a lot of reintroduction programs.
      So any captured to help the population will be placed in areas that mimic their natural habitat as much as possible.

    I'm a little confused by the whole, natural selection and evolution of species over time.. but then we're worried that this door mouse is going extinct and we have to protect / reverse its decline.
    there have been countless species lost to the world.. this is natural. Doesn't further intervention by humans create an even more unnatural future?

      Hi @JROD, thanks for your comment. Don't worry, they don't stay in the bags for long, just long enough for us to weigh them. And they have plenty of oxygen =) Our work is essential, without it we wouldn't have a clue how in decline these little creatures are and how in need of our help they are.
