This exact thing happened to my dad back in 2014. it was right before Christmas, and he got trapped by the fronds which in turn did not allow him the airway to breathe. There should be more awareness of this, but on that same note; the kind of men that climb 30+ foot tall trees aren't the type to be moved by a PSA, these men are extremely brave, and my dad was too stubborn and hard ass to ever think a tree could take his life.

@André When the workers climb up the tree and trim the fronds from the bottom up, placing themselves directly beneath the fronds and a trimmer cuts or pulls on dead fronds, adjacent fronds or an entire ring of fronds may collapse and encase the worker. The weight of the fronds causes pressure on the worker’s chest and can lead to suffocation. This is how I understand the scenario to play out, but to be honest it's still a very complicated thing to understand given the rarity of this sort of death, and nobody has really considered this possibly happening. Any video or coverage of this doesn't get as much views as it deserves. I still ask myself to this day how this could've happened.

I read that this happens when the workers climbed up the tree and trimmed the fronds from the bottom up, placing themselves directly beneath the fronds. When a tree trimmer cuts or pulls on dead fronds, adjacent fronds or an entire ring of fronds may collapse and encase the worker. The weight of the fronds causes pressure on the worker’s chest and can lead to suffocation. Proper work procedures and correct equipment should be used. Fronds should be removed by workers using an aerial device and wearing fall protection. Alternatively, workers should use climbing procedures that place them above the fronds. this is from the CDC website. They should be licensed and have all safety measures , to protect their workers ! I live in San Diego. There are so many different types of palm tree's, all need maintenance to trim the dead fronds that don't look dangerous, but are heavy, and have the saw tooth edges that can really injure a person, or hit cars. One thing about San Diego is our lack of storms, so many times the dead fronds will come down at once. I saw one burn a few years ago, and the flames shot 100 feet above the tree, and all the critters living in the fronds jumped, on fire. So, be happy someone didn't plant 15 of them in your yard 40 years ago! Super expensive to have trimmed or removed!

Similar to suspension trauma - the added weight of the branches on him will cause increased pressure on the body - especially to the leg loops of the harness. This effectively crushes the pulmanory arteries in the legs cutting off circulation.
The body’s synoptic response is that the brain tells the heart to pump harder and faster as it is being starved of oxygenated blood. All this does is pump more blood to the legs which is unable to return to the rest of the body due to the pressure of the harness.
The body’s response then is to faint (basically the body is trying to lie down into horizontal position so that circulation can normalize).
Fainting in a harness will definitely lead to unconsciousness and is almost certain death within minutes. So sad.
This is one of the main reasons to never work at height alone and always have a well prepared rescue plan that can be executed safely within a maximum of 15 minutes.
Many people who do this type of work unfortunately are not fully aware of all of the risks. Such a sad situation. Sorry for the loss

When you trim a palm tree you always do it from the top. Palm skirts are very unstable and when you start cutting from below the whole skirt which is very heavy can Slough off and crush the tree worker suffocating him. Trained arborists know about this danger and are trained to start trimming the skirt at the top. Either using a bucket truck or shooting a line over the top and then climbing up to the top over the skirt and working from the top down. You never want to be tied in under an unstable skirt. More tree trimmers need to be trained about this dangerous situation. Very sad... My condolences to his family.

Idk what the cause of death was, but I used to hate palm trees when I was an arborist. The undersides of the palm fronds are usually full of yellow jacket wasps and red hornets. If you're allergic, you're going to find out real quick. And the guys doing this work now work for cash under that table, usually don't speak English, and have no insurance. I had a boss tell me once to be careful but if you get hurt all he's gonna do is drive you to the ER, dump you off, and you don't know him and he doesn't know you - got that? And that's all. This is how it works in Texas.

I trimmed some of those for friends, and hated every minute of working on those trees. The trees are top heavy, the fronds are unbalanced and quite hard and heavy, wait till you put a frond into a chipper. The fronds continually shed large unbreakable leaves that easily block gutters. Anyone liking those trees on their property is crazy.

FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE CONFUSED: Fronds are just the big branches. Tree trimmers get up there to trim the dead ones. Some will get up under them to cut them which is dangerous. If one doesn't fall off all the way or shifts it can be heavy enough to pin the persons in and put pressure on their body making it difficult to breath. Additionally, it will take rescue services a long time to get to get to you if you're still alive increasing the risk that you'll die.

You should never trim without a watching partner. Being in trees is a risky business, anything with a high risk factor should always be done with a team. If anything goes wrong, at least help is right there.

    • @MfckingDye

The most a watching partner can do is call 911, other than that, the fate of the tree trimmer is the ticking time it takes for the fire department to arrive, and attend to the trapped man. I believe it took 40 minutes to pull my dad out. It was too late.
