Part of the Hard working guys who go unnoticed and unappreciated in our society everyday . God bless him .
It's "every" and "day": Two words.
As a self learned tree surgeon, we don't care about recognizance or appreciation. The paycheck and any tips are just fine. Tress are our friends and deserve care and attention. Like children they need help.
@@David-lo1fo
Seriously?
"recognizance"?
I had no idea that was a word.
I like your attitude. towards trees
@Daryl Lect my phone said was a word. Does it work?
@@David-lo1fo Yep. It's a word!
This exact thing happened to my dad back in 2014. it was right before Christmas, and he got trapped by the fronds which in turn did not allow him the airway to breathe. There should be more awareness of this, but on that same note; the kind of men that climb 30+ foot tall trees aren't the type to be moved by a PSA, these men are extremely brave, and my dad was too stubborn and hard ass to ever think a tree could take his life.
God bless. I also had a stubborn, hardheaded dad who was too brave for his own good.
@@CatharsisByProxy I hope you loved him and respected him! Men are gladiators!
Not smart
@@Frickitall If no one do this kind of work, does the home owner will do it by themselves?
@André When the workers climb up the tree and trim the fronds from the bottom up, placing themselves directly beneath the fronds and a trimmer cuts or pulls on dead fronds, adjacent fronds or an entire ring of fronds may collapse and encase the worker. The weight of the fronds causes pressure on the worker’s chest and can lead to suffocation. This is how I understand the scenario to play out, but to be honest it's still a very complicated thing to understand given the rarity of this sort of death, and nobody has really considered this possibly happening. Any video or coverage of this doesn't get as much views as it deserves. I still ask myself to this day how this could've happened.
I read that this happens when the workers climbed up the tree and trimmed the fronds from the bottom up, placing themselves directly beneath the fronds. When a tree trimmer cuts or pulls on dead fronds, adjacent fronds or an entire ring of fronds may collapse and encase the worker. The weight of the fronds causes pressure on the worker’s chest and can lead to suffocation. Proper work procedures and correct equipment should be used. Fronds should be removed by workers using an aerial device and wearing fall protection. Alternatively, workers should use climbing procedures that place them above the fronds. this is from the CDC website. They should be licensed and have all safety measures , to protect their workers ! My Heartfelt Sympathy to the Family !
When a tree is over-weighted with fronds such as this tree was, you are absolutely correct. This tree had not been maintained for over five years. If the tree is maintained annually, then the bottom up approach is acceptable.
@@drwhoeric
The CDC is a little suspect don't you think?
@@matthewmiller2219 Not in this case, workers should have safety equipment, in dangerous jobs like this ! If he was able to trim it from the top, he wouldn't have died.

Kept ignoring it cuz it was an ad, but it now makes sense why it kept popping up in my feed. These incidents are a common occurrence and have been for years. The palm fronds are very sharp and I’m telling you a baby palm tree will slice you open. He cut all fronds and they fell on top of him. If this didn’t have thorns then the weight of the fronds smothered him when they came down and he couldn’t breathe.

Firefighters, emergency workers sure are brave, being up on that high ladder on such windy day, thank you for all you do!!!
Wow! Being a Canadian I always associated Palm trees with sun and fun. I never would have guessed that trimming the dead fronds can encase and suffocate you! WOW!😢
I live in San Diego. There are so many different types of palm tree's, all need maintenance to trim the dead fronds that don't look dangerous, but are heavy, and have the saw tooth edges that can really injure a person, or hit cars. One thing about San Diego is our lack of storms, so many times the dead fronds will come down at once. I saw one burn a few years ago, and the flames shot 100 feet above the tree, and all the critters living in the fronds jumped, on fire. So, be happy someone didn't plant 15 of them in your yard 40 years ago! Super expensive to have trimmed or removed!
Each one can weigh up to 10lbs depending on its size, plus they have sharp, jagged edges like a saw.
I’m a groundsman I work with these cutters everyday. What they do is incredibly brave and dangerous. I couldn’t imagine my seeing this happen to any of my brothers. Rip. Prayers go out to his family.
Similar to suspension trauma - the added weight of the branches on him will cause increased pressure on the body - especially to the leg loops of the harness. This effectively crushes the pulmanory arteries in the legs cutting off circulation.
The body’s synoptic response is that the brain tells the heart to pump harder and faster as it is being starved of oxygenated blood. All this does is pump more blood to the legs which is unable to return to the rest of the body due to the pressure of the harness.
The body’s response then is to faint (basically the body is trying to lie down into horizontal position so that circulation can normalize).
Fainting in a harness will definitely lead to unconsciousness and is almost certain death within minutes. So sad.
This is one of the main reasons to never work at height alone and always have a well prepared rescue plan that can be executed safely within a maximum of 15 minutes.
Many people who do this type of work unfortunately are not fully aware of all of the risks. Such a sad situation. Sorry for the loss
Our dad owned a Tree Service in San Diego I did this for a living before joining the Army It’s scary and dirty work Prayer’s for his family and friends

So sorry to hear this. May God be with the family. Hate to hear of anyone working and getting hurt.
I wonder if this is a common hazard when trimming those palm trees. The same exact thing happened a few years ago to a tree trimmer. That whole ring of dead fronds slid down the tree on to that other guy and killed him.
How does that even happen unless he was underneath while cutting?
He was underneath while cutting
I’ve done it hundreds of times.
Only last week, I was up a ladder doing this to our palm tree's.
Completely unaware of the potential dangers.
Thankfully I was only 18 or more feet in the air.
And I'm just a housewife/grandmother, with knee replacement. And there's no real way, other than start at the bottom and work your way up.
After all, palm tree's, even though look nice, are a glorified weed in my opinion.
My heart is broken for this gentleman and his family..
Resting in the arms of angels.. Gods love...
When you trim a palm tree you always do it from the top. Palm skirts are very unstable and when you start cutting from below the whole skirt which is very heavy can Slough off and crush the tree worker suffocating him. Trained arborists know about this danger and are trained to start trimming the skirt at the top. Either using a bucket truck or shooting a line over the top and then climbing up to the top over the skirt and working from the top down. You never want to be tied in under an unstable skirt. More tree trimmers need to be trained about this dangerous situation. Very sad... My condolences to his family.
You have to realize something these individuals that are doing the work are Hispanic, most of them dont have a high school diploma, so you can't expect much out of it, furthermore they don't have any real training to do this type of work
if you look at the tree, you can clearly see that he did start at the top and was working his way downward.

He was trapped under the fronds that collapsed down the trunk as an entire collar. How can he be under them if he was above them. This same exact thing has happened many times, and is well documented.
Listen to an eye witness to the accident @8:29
Here's a 7 minute video put out by the state of California on the subject: czcams.com/video/sZoghIsJCp0/video.html
Ive been searching for an explanation of what happened. Thats what I figured.. that skin holding the fronds loosens up and can fall down.
So sad that this happened
Off to work to earn money to live, and by doing this, doing the right thing, he lost his life.
Idk what the cause of death was, but I used to hate palm trees when I was an arborist. The undersides of the palm fronds are usually full of yellow jacket wasps and red hornets. If you're allergic, you're going to find out real quick. And the guys doing this work now work for cash under that table, usually don't speak English, and have no insurance. I had a boss tell me once to be careful but if you get hurt all he's gonna do is drive you to the ER, dump you off, and you don't know him and he doesn't know you - got that? And that's all. This is how it works in Texas.
What a strange accident!
It happens a lot

RIP TREE TRIMMER 🙏 Condolences to your family and friends at this difficult time. 😥😢
I trimmed some of those for friends, and hated every minute of working on those trees. The trees are top heavy, the fronds are unbalanced and quite hard and heavy, wait till you put a frond into a chipper. The fronds continually shed large unbreakable leaves that easily block gutters. Anyone liking those trees on their property is crazy.
Wow, what happened? Before I clicked I was thinking the tree fell on him or something but no. RIP and my condolences to his family and friends.
He could of had a medical emergency.
The witness stated he became trapped under the palm fronds , he most likely was asphyxiated either by the fronds or his climbing gear

How did he die though? I read the description and said wind might be a factor? Did he suffocate?
All the branches were rotten and let go at the same time crushing him or cutting off air
Did i miss something? I didn't see how they extracted.
They don’t want to show a dead body
Aren’t they cut 1 at a time? He was pinned under 1 section or kept cutting until he was buried under them?
do you see how windy it is ? maybe that had something to do with it ?

This very same thing happened to another tree trimmer a couple of years ago
An unsung hero of modern society.
God bless and keep you brother.
didn't show what happened
FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE CONFUSED: Fronds are just the big branches. Tree trimmers get up there to trim the dead ones. Some will get up under them to cut them which is dangerous. If one doesn't fall off all the way or shifts it can be heavy enough to pin the persons in and put pressure on their body making it difficult to breath. Additionally, it will take rescue services a long time to get to get to you if you're still alive increasing the risk that you'll die.
🕊 Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him. May the soul of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen. 🕊
Now I have to go to WPD and see if they caught this on camera! Those fronds will get you every single time!!

You should never trim without a watching partner. Being in trees is a risky business, anything with a high risk factor should always be done with a team. If anything goes wrong, at least help is right there.
The most a watching partner can do is call 911, other than that, the fate of the tree trimmer is the ticking time it takes for the fire department to arrive, and attend to the trapped man. I believe it took 40 minutes to pull my dad out. It was too late.
