Sometimes it feels like I’m going in circles. But now, that circle has brought me back to where I started: playing a Nord Stage (4) again! Recently, I’ve been selling a bunch of stuff I didn’t use anymore and managed to snag a fantastic deal on a Stage 4 73.
As some of you know, my earliest production work-those remixes and my first album-were all created with a Nord Stage Classic. I sold it a long time ago, but I’ve always missed it. Now, I’ve finally got one back in my hands, and it feels great.
I have a CP70, which is a fantastic (electric) piano, but living in an apartment with neighbors on all sides limits when and how I can play it. I can’t play it at night or mic it for recordings without picking up traffic noise, which isn’t ideal for intimate settings.
To work around this, I’ve relied heavily on Spectrasonics Keyscape for intimate piano recordings in FL Studio. However, it’s always a hassle to get the MIDI right, and setting up the DAW every time I just want to play can be frustrating.
Now, with the Stage 4 back in my room, it’s perfect. I just switch it on and start playing. Here’s the first piano recording I’ve made with it: a stripped-back version of “I Miss You Today,” originally from my album Music For City And Nature. It’s wonderful to hear it in this “back to the basics” style, as Ryuichi Sakamoto would say.
What do you think? I think the piano sounds absolutely gorgeous! I’m excited to make more recordings like this and maybe someday release a whole piano album of my older tracks!
