Nice and very informative video. Thank you for your time and effort in doing so. I have that $300 harbor freight special that has been Frankensteined over the years. I've been looking at this model as a shop upgrade. It's been 6 months since your post. How is it holding up? Any positive or negative surprises with it?
We cool our blades with air, cutting stainless all the time and restrictions in procedures limit choices for wet coolants. We use Elis saws but this saw is nice for small shops check into some Lenox saw blades with variable pitch teeth, they will cut that steel like butter, long cuts like that I would look for a 6-10 or a 5-8 if I could get it.
Thanks for the tips! As an electrician, I am familiar with Lenox. I will give it a try.
Can you adjust the speed?
What speed setting did you set it at? Did square the blade to the table, or the vise to the blade? I was under the impression that coolant extends the life of the blade; you disagree with that?
Awesome Craig, does that locking wheel compress the parts in the vise or just lock it in place?
Locks it in place. I guess it could compress some depending on the material.
I don't use water based coolants as they promote rust on my tools but I do use petroleum based ones which should not evaporate at the same rate. In fact I have found that my old new stock transmission oils from years past autos works very very well and doesn't rust my gear nor 'sour up' as the water based ones do. It is especially good with aluminum but I don't have any complaints on its performance with steel either. Using bi metal blades (Lenox and another sold by LA Saw are my favorites) I get very long life.
I just found one of these sideways in a pile of junk rusting, salvaged, 1 wire nut later in the motor box it was running and made a cut lol!!!!! Been cleaning up the rust ad chasing threads lubing etc..... Noticed the gear box leaks they likely all do so keep up with adding gear lube to the gear box and this unit will last a long time, but what ever you do don't let the gear box go dry.....the pinion gear will burn up.......

I'm waiting on that saw to arrive. I just ordered an 18tpi blade for it also from Grizzly. Hope it holds up.

Hi thanks for the video. I have been thinking about either the Grizzly ,Wen or HF. Since HF excluded central machinery from coupons and with extended warranty the prices are similar. I already know there will be some “dialing it in” as none of them come tracking or cutting straight. Overall do you recommend your saw? Have you ever had to do any warranty or deal with Grizzly Customer service. Any input would be great 👍
I've been pretty happy with it. Its main job has been cutting 3/16x3/4 hot rolled flat bar. I usually cut it in bundles of 10. We have cut maybe 15,000 pieces with it. The blade falls off every once in a while. We change the blade and it runs great again. We just buy the bimetal blades from McMaster (Starrett). I've never had to fix it. Changed the gearbox oil once. You have to keep it clean and oiled but that's a given.

Your blade will cut faster and last longer if you cut your material with the shortest cross section. Meaning rotate those stacks vertical.

Do you use the vertical function at all? Did it come with the vertical table? I'm between this, the Jet equivalent and a few distributor-brand copies from Rex Supply or MSC.
I never used it. I'm pretty sure it came with it.
It does it’s just a tray that you mount when it’s in the vertical position.
Is there numbers on the feedrate dial? How can you tell what feed rate the machine is set at?
There is a feed rate dial on the lowering cylinder
Have you tried using your coolant system just to see what it does for the life of your blade I run Lenox brand cutting fluid 10% ratio and it sure seems to make all the difference in the world. I've used mine to cut a lot of 1 in by 4 and 1 inch by 10 inch plate steel and I have yet to replace it anyway it is neat to see small business still plugging away good luck my friend
I tried once when I was cutting a lot of aluminum. Stopped because I was afraid all the water would damage the saw over time.
Now that you've had it for 3+ years, do you still recommend it? Have you modified/repaired it over the years?

It's a workhorse. Don't think you can do better for the money. If I had the money I would probably go bigger but we cut a lot. The only mod I made was adding a work stop. The work stop that comes with it isn't great.
Yo did you figure out how to open the door to access the blade? It wont open all the way on ours and its driving me nuts.
You have to pull out the sheet metal piece closest to the hinge. Below the motor.

Now you've had your saw for a few years would you still recommend a Grizzly?
Kind of? I guess that's a topic for another video. It has its problems but I'm not sure there is anything better for the price. We push it pretty hard though. The blade falls off every once in a while. Oil on the bearings and changing the blade when it gets dull helps.
@@craigsmachineshop2040 The coolant they recommend is an oil based coolant. I learned to always use oil when cutting with a bandsaw is there a reason you’re doing dry cuts?
@@filmasart I guess I just remember a video of John Saunders (NYC CNC) where he said his bandsaw recommended cutting dry. I don't remember the brand. If I cut thick aluminum, I use oil though.
I just installed this saw in my shop and I am not happy with one feature. In cutting thick stock of one inch or more the cut is not perpendicular to the long axis of the stock. the blade travels through the metal at an angle away from the center of the machine that leaves an angle in the cut piece. I do not see any way to adjust this, but maybe I am missing something. Do you have any ideas? Thank you
I have cut 1" aluminum and didn't have that problem. Maybe you need to tighten the blade?

Hi there i been looking for a good bandsaw..Klutch/Jet..not to big of one as the price goes up$$$$ lol Looks like you have lots of good stuff in your shop...How do u like the Grizzly bandsaw...I was thinking if i got a grizzy the Grizzly G9742 - 5" x 6"....So is the Grizzlys any good......Thanks
Its awesome compared to the small Harbor Freight bandsaw but It has some problems. The hydraulic feed on/off valve doesn't work well. I have to use the adjustment knob on it instead. The belt tension pulley is kind of loose but it works. It's a workhorse though. I can run it hard for 3-4 hours with no problems.
Oh wow ok...Well for a 7in x 12in #HVBS-712 around the same cost of $1399,00 would you think just go with the Jet..?
That's only 3/4 hp for more money. Maybe get the grizzly but get them to fix it if there is a problem?

Have you started using coolant yet? It shouldn’t evaporate that quickly. I live in southern Utah and have no problems.
No, I'm afraid it will rust out the saw over time. I don't cut much aluminum. Works great without coolant in steel and stainless. I use a little cutting oil when I cut thick steel like 2x2 solid square steel.
Craig's Machine Shop oh I see. Ya aluminum is where it come in handy a lot. I feel like it makes the blade last longer cutting steel too though. I also like it for delrin and other low temp plastics.
If you want to make money you need the gear, I expect to see more upgrades in the shop coming up. :)

The volume could have been better, I couldn't hear well. I am planning to buy this saw and I was hoping I could have gotten a better view and hear what you were saying clearly.
Sorry you couldn't hear well. I just compared the audio to an ad from Google and it was about the same level. Maybe there is a setting you need to adjust on your computer? The video was the most comprehensive from what I have seen on CZcams. All the other videos were just short videos of cuts being made. That's why I made the video.

I purchased the same saw do yourself a favor and go get a bi-metal blade then that saw will cut forever and ever and ever
Yeah, I am using one now. Not sure about forever. We cut a lot of 3/16x3/4 hot rolled flatbar. We get maybe 8 hrs of straight cutting out of one.
