Dr Adrian, Football scientist and statistician 🔥
I always thought bonucci to Milan was a bargain deal I forgot how much they pay for back then
You should check the algerian 14-15 league table. The last placed team could still mathematically win the league just a few 5 games before the season ended. It ended up being a 15 point gap between 1st and 16th (16 teams in the league)
Woah!!!
That's like usl league one, every team except for last place could still get first the other year
Crazy
btw read book SATYARTH PRAKASH mate 👍🏻
that's amazing, that's what football should be !
My view of the Prem is that the race to escape relegation is more interesting than the race for the top. It's just that dynamic.
That’s a great way to look at it, I’m gonna pay more attention to the bottom 4 now!
It usually is like that down at the bottom for the most part, there have been many great escapes and there was an underrated one this season with Newcastle who won 1 out of their first 19 games and looked like they were doomed but with some investment in January (many thought it wasn't enough) and a new more tactically astute and modern manager they have been 3rd in the form table since the turn of the year behind Liverpool and Man City. Burnley have also had a great improvement after a managerial change and Everton could go down and could possibly be the biggest club to get relegated from the top division in the PL era (they used to be a part of the big 5 who pushed through the creation of the Premier league)
Not a top 5 league, but League One in England has been so competitive this season. 23/24 teams could’ve changed position on the final day. The top 7 all got 80+ points, play off sides had between 80-89 points, top two got 90 & 92 points.
Closest it’s been for years and promotion and relegation went to the final game
Good shout i dont watch but those facts are impressive but probably an anomalie
Way more fun than seeing Bayern win it every year
Tbh premier League, Championship, and league one are all so competitive and fun to watch. England has been so dominant.
2 Bundesliga is so tight too
You should watch Ryan taffazoli CZcams channel he's a centreback for Wycombe and is in the heat of a promotion playoff!!!!
Serie A in more recent times
Competitive, because of it's amazing quality, or it's lack of quality?
"More recent times" ie only two seasons.
And let's just forget Juve steamrolling the serie a title for almost a decade🤣
@@wildeyshere_paulkersey853 lack of an elite team but it has more secondary type teams who can compete in europe than any1 outside epl. but yeah juve fell off now they dont have a bayren, real madrid or PSG atop the league
@@lalitthapa101 More recent time indicates the last two seasons. What a revelation from you
@@wildeyshere_paulkersey853 So there's always a new angle no matter what. Wonder what you'd have to say about 5 Serie A teams left in the latter stages of European comp, with only 2 Prem and 2 La Liga.
The Brazilian First Division is very underrated in terms of competitiveness.
Although the quality of the football is not on par with Serie A, La Liga or the Prem, it definitely is much more interesting to watch and follow than Bundesliga or Ligue 1. And with many matches having better quality football too, specially compared to Ligue 1.
Damn you did the Uber Eats league dirty man 😂
Sure, it’s competitive, but as you said, being competitive don’t mean it’s in high level, take league A, I swear, the Brazilian league has more quality of football then the French league
Didnt gremio get relegated south american football is underated
I’m a BVB fan and while Bayern’s domination sucks, I’d watch the bundesliga over any other league. Much more entertaining attacking football
What a shitty opinion.... Bundesliga is incredibly entertaining to watch and it has incredible quality as seen in Europe
Nice video, but would be cool be cool if included more leagues, like eredivise and primeira liga
True
Not a real league but I think if you mix up The Eredivisie and Belgian Pro League you would get quite an interesting and competitive league with A LOT of exciting youngsters going at each other.
It would be a good league tbf
They could combine like NBA with East and West, then play offs
Germany is the toughest league race for who's coming in 2nd every year. Lol
nah 3rd. Dortmund always comes 2nd
Honestly would have been interesting to expand it to the top 10 leagues.
Although looking at the austrian Bundesliga as an austrian is depressing:
- Only 2 league champions in the last decade (Austria Vienna 1x, Red Bull Salzburg 9x in a row) and 5 in the last two decades (GAK 1x, Sturm Graz 1x, Rapid Vienna 2x, Austria Vienna 3x, Red Bull Salzburg 13x)
- Points gap in top 10 (after 22 games in regular season; it split up after that and points were halved): 33 points at an average of 3.6 points
- Title contenders this year: 1
And don't forget to add the fact that Salzburg won 8 out of the 9 last cups aswell
Hey Adrian, great video as always!
Please a part 2 of this where you rank other or lower leagues some of which you mentioned towards the end.
Well the title says “Which top five european league IS the most competitive”, so we should talk about this season and imo serie a is by far the most fun to watch (there’s competition for the title, for the european spots and also in the relegation zone)
Funny though that to "round down" the winners of Serie A of the last 20 years to three, exacty the 99-2000 and 2000-01 seasons had to be left out of the count, because otherwise it would have been 5, with Lazio winning in 2000 and Roma winning in 2001. Just two years really made a big difference from that pov. Also one year before this one would have been enough to add Milan to the winners of the last decade. So we went from 3 winners in the last 10 years / 5 winners in the last 20 years to 2 in 10y/3 in 20y in just two seasons
P.S: I would have added Eredivisie and Liga Nos to this, too
I hate the term big 5. Why does Portugal and The Netherlands always get left out? Just because France now has PSG? People now all of a sudden include France with the big 4. It pisses me off.
@@joehogan8234 i may understand portuguese but eredivisie???
I own a moderate sized farm in southern France that operates in the summer months and I can confirm during our off season most of my employees go off to play in Ligue 1
The fact that you put Bundesliga 2 in S Tier makes me somehow unbelievable happy as a fan of a team that is in that league :D
This is awesome and Id love to see the list include some other major leagues.
Another great video! By far the most underrated and under-appreciated football CZcamsr out there
Yeah I pretty much agree. 1. Premier league, 2. Serie A, 3. La Liga, 4. League 1, 5. Bundesliga. If it wasn't because of Bayern bundesliga could've been the most exciting league but they're just unreasonably above everyone else it doesn't even make sense anymore. Thankfully Milan and Inter picked up and didn't let the same thing happen to Serie A.
Would switch 2 and 3 around as well as 4 and 5 but pretty damn good.
May the 4th be with you! Another quality video my guy.
Great video bro! Will want you to make these kind of tier videos for the top 5 leagues in all the continents. I think that will take quite a bit of research to do hahahaha!
I appreciate how you noted the year to year dynamics and money flow for the league - that makes a lot of what is the joy of the Premier and the burden that Ligue 1 carries - I personally enjoy watching highlights from the Premier League most , and I believe in their teams a lot more than any other league for those reasons , and it's all entertainment at the end of the day , so I choose to watch the most fair football : )
I agree completely with this list. My problem online is only that people often mistake competitiveness with quality. I agree that the Bundesliga isn't a competitive league but because of that prem fans don't rate Bundesliga players which is a logical flaw in my opinion. Just because Bayern are super consistent and one of the best teams in the world doesn't means that the quality of the rest is exponential worse than other leagues like Serie a or Prem. If Juventus and Psg would be run as good as Bayern it would be the same picture.
U have to remember you're seeing this stuff on Twitter which let's be honest who acc knows what they're talking about there
Premier league teams literally farming your league.

Great shirt Adrian. Back in the time it was considered the ugliest Dutch kit but then again we won our only cup with it so it has become quite iconic.
Adrian,
As a fellow North American, I think you should review the MLS. Sure it's not up to Quality as the Top 5 Leagues, but 9 Different League Winners in the last 10 years shows a lot of Parity. There also our Salary Structure where it keeps it competitive.
Obviously with a play-off system you’re going to have way more different winners
I would probably have expanded this to include virtually every european top flight. I dunno, a tier list with 5 options might aswell just get ranked from Least to Most competitive.
Another great video Adrian 👍🏽 thank Paco for me!
Another banger as per
Please make this a regular each season 🙏
Ahhh yes yes, gimme those tier list videos 🔥
I think you should added European competition as well, how far they get.
You should do tier lists of leagues outside of the big 5. For example Netherlands, Portugal, Austria, Belgium and Turkey.
Serie A by far
LMAO. You wish.
I demand you do one with the concacaf leagues and rank MLS above liga MX .
I know this might require a Asia sized load of research, but how about the rest of Europe's Leagues as I'm curious to know where you'd place them (We all know where the San Marinese League is gonna go)
As of this year , I would make a case for this rank -
EPL ( no question , talent , competition, fair , and passion filled stadiums )
La Liga ( I don't have a super strong case for La Liga , right now they're going through changes so it's difficult to define > they could be in 2nd place , but not the hottest year although Barcelona is climbing once again )
Serie A ( I LOVE THIS NEW LOOK !! Napoli winning is a breath of fresh air , and the top teams are all great )
Bundesliga ( VERY HIGH TALENT - 4 teams fighting their way through to the UCL Round of 16 )
Primeira Liga ( i love these new Benfica and Porto teams, Sporting even looking bright ! )
Ligue 1 ( i think they're cooking somewhere overtime , but just hopefully it won't forever be a PSG definite )
Love the content. Ngl that bundesliga one is brutally honest that bundesliga fans need to hear
I loved this video idea
You should make part 2 with now other Leagues in top 20
As croatian, i put My league in D tier, its just that bad, but last 2 seasons shows promises in end of Dinamo Zagreb's rain
I looked up Bundesliga winners in the 90's i was surprised that Bayern didn't dominate.
I also wanna add that the Portuguese has gained much more power among the big teams ! Benfica & Porto rank among UCL-QF teams and Sporting gave a nice shake in their group which felt pretty even this year ! I would rank it side to side with or slightly below Serie A !
In the last 20 years 50% of European titles have been won by Spanish team
In the last 10 years: 20 Spanish titles (61%) 8 English titles (24%) 5 German titles (15%)
Spanish teams have been finalist in 28 times of 33 European finals in the last 10 years
this with other leagues would be nice
That's one Dope Adidas shirt. Also awesome vid
Hey Rabona! Check out the Chilean league, teams seem to land anywhere anytime! Since Colo-Colo's dominance I have no idea how they'll do from year to year. Take some time to check the results out for the past few years at least, its worth it.
The only S tier league that ever existed would have to be Serie A during the 90s and early 2000s.
For me, a great flaw in the competitiveness in all of those top european leagues is the high number of "limbo places", since most of them grants no prize qualification from 8th to 17th places! So, other than a little extra cash for finishing higher, a lot of teams have no incentive to play the last 3-4 matches of the competition. Here in Brazil, instead of 10 limbo places, we have only 4: from 13th to 16th - with the same 20 teams overall. Because of that every single team has something to fight for to the last match, with great drama in the last rounds. They should think about that in Europe, especially now with the advent of Conference League which could grant more qualification spots to the top leagues.
If you want a close competition in Germany, watch the 2nd Division. It is always insanely tight at the top! I mean this season alone there are like 6 teams still in the run for promotion. The 1st Liga ist lame AF. Bayern dominating, Dortmund bored at 2nd place and then Leipzig + one team battling it out for the CL.
Edit: OK while watching I saw he mentionend that in the End. Good man!
the 3rd and 4th place in the bundesliga is currently pretty competitive with leverkusen, freiburg and leipzig fighting for the spots, especially if you consider that both leipzig and freiburg will play in the cup final and leipzig might also play a europa league final. maybe even köln can challenge them, they‘re having a pretty remarkable season aswell.
@@walkthedinosaur1223 Yeah, this year it is pretty nice since Bremen and Schalke etc are out so the place opened up for Union, Freiburg, Köln etc. But still: Leipzig safe 3rd place with Leverkusen and/or another club knocking on the CL-doors.
Great vid should have added Dutch and Portuguese leagues too tho
Pinsoglio getting a deserved shout up! This is why I love Adrian❤
One of these for leagues outside the top 5? (like Portugal 👀)
Adrian, this is a good video. Competitiveness is very subjective as it is a multivariate function as alluded to in the video. The EPL is the original super league in Concept. Especially, with the influx of foreign money since the early '00s. EPL teams typically have over 60% of their starting 11 are foreigners. They repeatedly farm players from the competition for Bayern, PSG etc, thus leaving those teams in a perpetual rebuilding cycle.
Is the average point gap between the top 10 teams over a decade or just for this seaeson?
Waiting for my luck, I've been subbed for over a year. Pay up sir ;-)
With the criteria that you described, I feel that Ligue 1 would be bottom B tier, everything was in favour for them, the league is just biased against based on PSG winning 8/10 but it wasn't anything like Serie A or Bunderliga (9 in a row and 10 in a row) PSG's domination has been 4 in a row and 3 in a row. The entire league table is a lot closer and more competitive as shown in you analysis, so personally it's up to the bottom of B tier for me. (Also the "winning the league by a lot of points" argument, City won by 12 points last year in the prem, Liverpool by 18 points the year before, City by 19 points the year of 100 points, so it happens in other leagues too)
Hoped that you would have done more than 5, championship, eredivisie, Belgium, turkey ,
I would make a rule for all leagues to make them competitive. A team that wins more than 2 consecutive years will have to start with a handicap next season. It will be calculated like this:
If club A wins the league in 2022, and then in 2023 that club will start season 2024 with minus -3 points instead of 0.
If they win 2024 too they will start 2025 season with -6 and so on.
So you wanna punish people for being successful?
Absolutely ridiculous idea imo.
I think the league's performance in the European competitions should have been added.
For the question of most competitive this would’ve been irrelevant
That is skewed. Bayern perform very well in UCL but the rest barely make it past the last 16
@@micahkiyimba8641 the amount of team that performs in Europe tells the strength of a league, not competitiveness tho imo
Do more leagues
Would MLS be considered S tier by this criteria?
Seems like it would be. Otherwise, I have complaints about the rankings, as they are definitive and done by an expert with a degree in tier-making
Yes it would be considered S tier. Their NBA format on how salary caps work on each teams makes the league extremely competitive. In terms of format, MLS has always had the best but the talent was always something they're set back on.
I wish all European leagues followed their system. It would simply balance out all the clubs and make it more enjoyable to watch and not see a stacked PSG team with bigger budgets which is completely unfair
Depends how u view it. In terms of title races best in the last 5 years is Seria A last 10 years the prem. In terms of table variability it’s the prem.
La liga past year season was very competitive it was four horses race
That legendary sm57 instrumental dynamic mic sounds shockingly good as a podcast mic . Anyway - I agree with your list , let’s go Manchester United ❤❤👍🏼✌🏽
Most "competitive" is overrated imo. Don't get me wrong, I like competitive leagues because the games matter more and the title races are more exciting but it has no factor on how good the level of the league actually is. Just take a look at Serie A for proof. It's the most competitive out of the 5 big leagues. Yet it's not the strongest league out of the 5. Imo it's currently 4th or maybe even 5th. Italian teams have been a disgrace in European competitions for over a decade. Forget winning the CL they can't even win the Europa League. AC Milan will probably win Serie A this year and they were beaten by Liverpool's reserves. The best team they've had over the last decade were those Juventus sides which made the CL finals twice. And that happened when it was one of the LEAST competitive leagues when Juventus won 9 straight.
Lastly, having a more competitive league doesn't = being better suited for winning the CL. This is the excuse used for PSG or Bayern slipping up. But AGAIN look at Serie A. Super competitive, yet their teams have been failing miserably in Europe. When it comes to the CL there is no science to it or perfect formula. The strongest squads and collections of talent typically win. Bayern have been dominating Germany for 10 years straight and still won the CL twice. It's all about who has the talent, who has the luck go their way and who shows up on the given day in a knockout competition. Not being tested enough because you play in a weaker league CAN be a factor, but it doesn't have to be. Similarly a competitive and grueling league season CAN be a detriment in Europe because managers rest their stars less and might prioritize league fixtures, but again, it doesn't have to be. There is no formula because there are examples of winning and losing with every scenario.
I would rather watch lower quality of football played if it's more competitive and any team can beat anybody..for a football fan that wants to go into a game NOT knowing who will win..Serie A is where it is
Italian teams have been a disgrace? Tell that to Atalanta, Fiorentina, Roma and Napoli who all have made runs into the CL knock out rounds over the last decade, taking big names down along the way. In Atalanta’s case they were so close to knocking out PSG, which leads to the next reason why you’re wrong: luck. Italian teams have been unlucky. Juve made it to 2 finals and faced the best Barca and the best Real sides in recent history. Roma got knocked out in the semi finals by the best Liverpool side in years. Inter lost the Europa League final because of Lukaku’s big head blocking a goal for his own team. Serie A sides punch well above their weight considering how woeful their finances are, yet on the pitch they still manage. If your only metric of success is counting recent European titles, then every club outside of Madrid, Barca, Bayern, and the big 4 in England are also a “disgrace”.
@@JP-vj7fp Maybe "disgrace" is a bit too harsh, but you get the point. Italian clubs have fallen behind. Considering Serie A used to be the best league during the 80s, 90s and most of the 2000s as well. A few cherry picked examples of "making a run" doesn't change the fact that they went from having the very best teams in world football to being also rans and underdogs. Serie A is my favorite league, believe me I'd love to see Italian clubs winning the Champions League or Europa League, but there's no sense deluding yourself. And yes finances are the primary reason for the regression. You can see that by the type of players playing in Italy today vs in the past. Good players, with some gems sprinkled in like Milinkovic-Savic, Barella, Vlahovic, Zielinski, Bastoni, Tonelli, Koulibaly, Immobile, etc. But they can no longer afford the creme of the crop mega stars. 20 years ago Mbappe, Halaand, Lewandowski, Modric, Van Dijk, De Bruyne and others would have been playing is Serie A.
@@thehollowedtree9586 lol calling serie a a disgrace because they can no longer afford the "mega stars" says a lot about how fcking clueless you are as a football fan

What city and Liverpool is doing right now barca and real Madrid did in this entire decade till 2017, and in between Atletico also were in race in 2 season which was 3 horse race till last day
I’d have to say la liga, this title race of Liverpool and man city you can’t figure out where either would drop even a single point. On the other hand Real Madrid are on their way to champions league finals proving they deserve there lead in the league they amassed. Yet every single league game is suspenseful.
Valencia won La Liga both in 01/02, and 03/04. Strange that a football expert wouldn't know that.
What other league apart from Serie A has had 4 different title winners in the past 4 years?
None. That makes Serie A the most competitive league in Europe right now.
The Premier League is the best, there is no other league that is as fast paced and full of constant action as it.

Although not a top 5 league one of my absolute favourite leagues is the 2.Bundesliga. Just incredible.
I think right now....Serie A is the most competitive. It's not the BEST league in terms of quality and Finances..but you had 3 teams legitimately going for the title this year...last year it was a 2 way battle until the last few weeks...the year before that was Juve's last of 9 in a row...you have the top 4 being Fluid...with Napoli, Roma, Atalanta getting in or out.
Right now..it's a open as it gets...next year Juve, Inter, Milan, Napoli and possibly even Roma will have legitimate title aspirations..there's no other league in Europe that has at least 4 real Title contenders right now.
The EPL is dominated by Liverpool and Man City......It has the best finaces..meaning that Everton has a bigger Budget than say AC Milan..but $$$$ does not make it competitive...it's a closed duopoly of 2 teams for the title and just 2-3 of the remaining 18 can consistently be in the top 4
Bundesliga and Ligue 1 are 1 team leagues...so is the Eredivisie to certain extent...The Portuguese league is more open now with Benfica and Porto slightly falling off and Sporting being decent..but Serie A is where you find REAL competitiveness
europe should be taken into consideration, la ligas dominance in europe over the last 10-20 years on budgets less than prem league.
Deffo prem
La Liga and it’s not even close
LMAO
City just became a One team league with City.
La liga has been the most competitive especially recently people can say we’ll only three different winners but in all leagues nowadays it’s only 2-4 teams that can actually compete for it regularly but Roman abramovich may buy Valencia which can put it back to a 4 team league while Villarreal Real Betis Sevilla Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao that always compete it can really become a very interesting league with more equal funding now for the past years and with another impressive generation of Spanish players coming through la liga will go back to being the number 1 league again
MLS is the only truly competitive league. Deal with it. 😉
Honestly, most leagues have suffered from excessive dominance. England is not some bastion of competition. This year included. Because even though the title race is great, calling it a "Big 6" is a laugh. And from 10th down, despite the money, the actual quality of games is scarcely higher than the Championship. And that's not praising the EFC's quality.
But yes, as a Bundesliga fan, Bayern's dominance, and the way people like Watzke simply wave off even trying to compete, is disgusting.
It's hilarious to me that what was, for almost 20yrs, a painful league to watch is now easily the best in the Serie A.
Serie A is a great watch..you can get a 4-4 or 4-3 any day and the title race is very exciting
To say the lower half EPL teams compete at the same level as the championship is a joke ngl. Yeah they can be bad at times but Norwich and Leeds dominated the championship. I support Bristol City and what I’d give for a bit of the quality Norwich have is crazy
@@davidmellings6997 Doesn't mean their level is anything approaching competitive. They're very good Championship teams.
Norwich in particular has no business in the top flight. And they're not the only ones who are sheer drudgery to watch.
I enjoy Bundesliga. Bayern domination aside that is. I find the games entertaining to watch.
La liga and premiere league. Change my mind
I love bundesliga that's it. Remaining I rarely watch.
Thoughts on what could become of a combination league between MLS and LigaMX. They've been flirting with the idea for years and I think that could make another big league
This is such a bad idea the us is already big enough to have two separate leagues and without pro/rel they’ll just keep adding more clubs to the already bloated mls table, adding in a whole other nation seems like a bad idea. It would also ruin the concacaf champions league.
@@dylanreid4371 not to mention liga mx has a clausura and apertura so theres like 2 seasons in one would ruin the tradition that mexico has implemented
@@dylanreid4371 I'd think the league would switch to a European league schedule and join Libertadores. If we're not thinking about how much money could be made when dealing with the US, we aren't thinking correctly.
@@french_toast223 the money that would come from the leagues combining and switching to a European type league schedule is wild. Owners of teams in the US are greedy and once they see the money potential, they'll jump. It's quite sad because I really like the CCL.
