This movie came out right along side “Thallumaala” (Ballad of Brawls) and still was a huge hit and was one of the reasons people came back to the theatre after covid restrictions
Few things which you missed since you are not Indian/Malayali:
Main female lead is tamilian and is speaking Tamil throughout the movie. It's because malayalees and tamilians can understand each other's language to an extend due to similarities. 2nd song "Devadoothar paadi" in which Kunchakko Bobban dances at temple premises is actually an old hit malayalam song from movie "Kaathodu Kaathoram". Song between Autorikshaw driver and girlfriend(his auto's name too) "Aayiram Kannumaayi" is also an old malayalam song.

When ayiram kannumai released it was a song describing love between grandmother and her daughter, after thattatthin marayatth it's changed
When the release day of the film, the production company put the poster of the film in every news papers, with a caption that says "pls come and watch in the theatres, but on the way beware of the potholes in the road, drive safely". That promotion strategy became a huge controversy among the keralites. Cuz some thoghts that it insults the govt.That was the biggest promotion that a film would get. And the film was a huge success ❤️.
This was a smash hit. It made 10 times what it cost. Also on the part about justice being delivered at the end. Life in Kerala is sort of like that. Bernard Shaw play. Horrible things happen. People become cynical. But in the end things kinda work out
That's true Kerala is a place you can count on to deliver some amount of justice compared to other states in India. Also TN ain't bad I guess

Malayalam movie industry is the A24 of Indian cinema, it is the best thing I heard today 💯 and I completely agree... super proud of gems of movies made here
It did well theatrically and we had a blast at theatres watching this, being expat who was coming back from India, my only regret was that I had to chose between this and 'Thallumala' in theatres 😢...Regarding the end, yes, I also felt that he would end up not winning the case but then I guess the director wanted to give us some wins but showing that their life hasn't changed much in the end and the pothole on roads remaining as it is (and coming to a circle to save Rajivan in the last scene) ...Great that you loved it (I wasn't fully sure of it as a lot of comedy also was regional and dialect based)...
Yes, I agree...I think writer/director wanted to emphasize on the fact that most of the time, even if someone win the case, there is still no benefits for others or even for the same person after that...this is more tragic than not winning the case...it beats the point of one getting justice or rather, is it justice?... that you won the case but nothing changed for you.
Most of the actors in the courtroom are new actors.Except the Lead pair,almost all of them are new.And you might think how did they pull of this with new actors,what the director did was he made a short film about the same court scene with these new actors and then watched it and made adjustmenets to the actors and the story based on the film he made(that film budget was like couple of lakhs which the director said the producer was willing to do,so as to see whether thus film will work,and whether it will work with this actors
Do you know what? Except the few lead casts, 80% of the casts were local people selected for the first time to be a part of this movie in one way or another. That was brilliant.

This movie was one of the best movies of last year. Kunchako Bobban has had a major shift in his craft. This movie truely stands out as one of the best of the year, 2018 is kind of overrated. I feel this movie could have been nominated for Oscars for the approach the director took to portray and express a political satire.

*Saudi Vellakka* Another masterpiece from Malayalam which was released last year. 2022 was a golden year for Malayalam film industry. Give it a watch.

Avasavyooham, Jana Gana Mana, Hridayam, Pada, Ela Veezha Poonchira, Puzhu, Rorschach, Bheeshma Parvam, Saudi Vellaka, Appan. All from 2022. Crazy how many gems you missed from Malayalam cinema in 2022. That being said the quality of the above films are up for debate but personally I liked them all.
Even some others like Bro Daddy, Mahaveeryar and Palthu Janwar are worth watching in my opinion.

The lorry overturning (because of a pothole) was the piece de resistance for me. The pothole nearly cost him his ass originally, but in the end it saved it too. What a clever satire!
If you loved this movie, you should watch "Jaane Bhi Do yaaro". You will be blown away. It is a CRIME that you have not seen it. The acting, comedy, satire, and what have you is next level. You have such greats as Naseer, Pankaj Kapur and Om Puri.
One day… Mmmh..One day…Malayalam Movie will get an Oscar. And I hope people will know more about this industry.

This is one of my fav movies from 2022 so glad you enjoyed it too 😊 Same for JJJJH. Another one of my favs of 2022 is the tamil gangster drama *Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu* , I've recommended it so many times 😭 Hopefully you watch it this year lol. It truly is a great movie and the director is one of the most renowned Tamil directors (Gautham Vasudev Menon, he is also an actor, you saw him in a side role in Leo for example).

The movie came out during a time when there was lot of controversy around potholes in roads killing civilians who travel by 2 wheelers.
There was a move by the ruling party at the time to kind of condemn the movie saying it was making fun of the government.

It's kind of weird listening to you guys talking about this because you say satire is not that common nowadays, but in Malayalam, satire has always been very common in films, the quality may vary, there are many bad ones too but a lot of satire comes out. There are many classic political satires in Malayalam that everyone loves, and even though this movie is very good, it doesn't feel as brilliant as you guys are saying here because of such great classics already existing
