Blown away by her. That voice is so powerful the neither the building nor the mic can handle it. You can hear her voice bouncing all over that place. It's not just that she had a powerful voice. Listen to that tone.

Although I'm a fan of Aretha Franklin and I like this version of the Inez and Charlie Foxx (siblings) single (reached #7 in 1963), the Aretha version is the "gold standard" only if you compare it to the popular (reached #5 in 1974) Carly Simon version. The Aretha version, by the way, reached #94 in 1967. The gold standard of this terrific will always be the original.

On this day in 1965 {March 10th} Aretha Franklin performed "Mockingbird" on the ABC-TV program 'Shindig!'...
Two years later on December 17th, 1967 her covered version of the song entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #94; the following week it was again at #94, and that was also its last week on the Top Top 100...
It did a little bit better north of the border; it reached #57 on the Canadian RPM Singles chart...
In 1963 Inez Foxx's original version peaked at #7 on the Top 100 and in 1974 Carly Simon & James Taylor's covered version reached #5 on the chart...

"Mockingbird” is a song about love, longing, and the fear of losing someone dear to your heart. The lyrics tell the story of a woman who is hoping her lover will buy her a mockingbird as a token of affection. However, if the bird doesn’t sing, the woman requests a diamond ring instead. The song expresses her fear that if the diamond ring doesn’t shine, her lover will break her heart.
This song beautifully portrays the vulnerability and uncertainty that can exist in relationships. It encapsulates the longing to be loved and the fear of losing that love. Aretha’s heartfelt delivery of the lyrics adds a layer of depth to the emotions expressed.

      Not really...
The original single was credited to Inez Foxx with vocal accompaniment by her brother Charlie, as they alternated the lyric on a syllabic basis. Considered something of a novelty song. ~interweb
