I didn't read the book but watched The Bookshop the movie. I loved it! It was beautifully filmed and I loved the ending very much. During the movie I thought it might have a happy ending like Chocolat but I was wrong--and I liked it that way. Thanks for comparing and contrasting the book and the movie; it's very helpful.

I'm glad you enjoyed the contrast, I am glad this made it into a movie because a love of books is just awesome to share!

I'm glad you enjoyed the movie. I'm afraid I was a bit disappointed by it, since I thought that what should have been a fine film somehow never really gelled, possibly due to indifferent editing, and the weak dialogues didn't help much. Perhaps the main problem I had with it was that I was expecting something quasi-magical like "Chocolat," and this film is surprisingly realistic, until you get to the last scene, which bewildered me so much I actually bought the excellent and understated book and read it. Surprise! The movie ending is nothing like the one in the book. °°SPOILER°° The movie ending entails a serious felony, and I immediately wondered which of the two - the girl or the bookseller - would go to prison for it. It looks like neither did - which I thought was odd, since the crime was so obvious - and I lost all affection for the perpetrator, so it left rather a bad taste in my mouth. I suspect some producer said, "We can't end the movie like the book, i.e. realistically." More's the pity.

Yeah I think the 'weak' dialigue is quite simillar to the book thoguh-I was slightly underwhelmed by both to be honest!

Chocolat ripped off The Bookshop left right and centre. And Mr Weston’s Good Wine.
