  • Here's a short clip of my 1959 Bolens Ride-a-Matic garden tractor with the garden tiller attachment. The engine is a Kohler K161 rated at a whopping 7hp. It does have the electric start kit, but part has been removed while I was working on the engine and frame and will not be replaced until I am further along in restoration. So far I've only gotten the engine running and the frame moving, along with getting the tiller operational. The duals are not original, but I added them for looks, traction, and stability- in that order. The fuel tank is homemade since the original was too rotten to repair. The ground is still way too wet to actually till anything, but that meant I had time to make this video instead of getting work done.

Searched this while watching a 1960s film Squad Car. Pretty neat to see this clip. Thanks

Thanks for the posting. It's interesting to think that the machine was made solidly enough in the first place so that, 52 years old, it can be got going without too many big rebuild or replacement jobs. By comparison, my 1997 10.5hp ride-on is tinny, and apart from the B&S engine which seems bullet-proof, the rest is a fight against corrosion and electrical faults. You Bolens with a grass cutting attachment would be brilliant. That engine must make gobs of torque!

well thats kind of familiar. i had one of those it was a 1961. actually i had that tiller as well. i remember the gear box with the long driveshaft going to the tiller. it was a good machine. simple simple. for the size of the machine it would do some serous work. i had to part ways after the garage collapsed and destroyed it. that was after i rebuilt the engine, tough luck. it was a good tractor. i also had the "sno-caster", mower, and single bottom plow. i also used to mow my lawn with it

It would have been cool to see the tiller actually work(till about a 25' swath).Put the original paint job on it and it will look just like new.
