Alyki is located two kilometers east of the center of Aegion, next to the most popular beach for swimming in the area. It is a small enclosed lagoon of 180 acres that is fed by rainwater and a large part of it dries up in the summer.
Its existence is the result of great efforts by local pioneers and the then young Hellenic Ornithological Society in the 70s and 80s. The result is that today Alyki is a wetland with a disproportionately large, relative to its size, value and gathers large numbers of migratory birds More than 235 species have been observed here. Bird watching is particularly popular in Alyki, especially in winter, when hundreds of waterfowl can be easily seen from the neighboring road. In cases of swans, more than 40,000 visitors have been counted over a period of two months.
The most important element of Alyki is that it has established itself in the world's consciousness as a place of nature protection and bird watching. This means that despite the minor problems (garbage from the sea, disturbance of birds by visitors and especially the wheeled vehicles moving on its beach) Alyki is one of the most effectively protected places in Greece. This of course does not mean that she should be left to her own devices. The ever-increasing number of visitors and the development of the coastal zone require more effective protection measures to be taken in the future.
Today, Alyki is a wetland with a disproportionately high value, in relation to its size, and gathers a large number of migratory birds. More than 235 species have been observed. Bird watching is particularly popular, especially in winter.
Alyki brings together all the main characteristics of a typical wetland. Reeds and other bushy plants provide shelter for thousands of migratory birds each year. Among them there are various groups of aquatic and waterfowl, such as swans and phoenixes, the well-known and beloved flamingo-phoenicopterus ruber. This diversity is the greatest among the Peloponnese wetlands.
