The Castle of Mila is built at an altitude of 295 meters and is located 2-3 kilometers northeast of the village of the same name. It is 7 kilometers from Meligalas and the view from the spot is amazing. It is built at a point of strategic importance for the control of the Messinian Gulf to the north. The Castle was built during the Frankish period and is kept in relatively good condition.
The restoration works of the Mila Castle carried out by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Messinia and under the responsibility and supervision of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Messinia Dras Evangelia Militsis-Kehagia are in the final stage and are almost completed and at the moment interventions are being made in the surrounding area.
The purpose of the Castle was to strengthen the defense of the Franks against the expansionist dispositions of the Greeks of the Despotate of the Moreos. It has been identified with the Chateaux Neuf which is said to have been founded by Isabelle de Villehardouin, the well-known Princess Isabeau, during the short period she alone held the throne of the Principality of Achaia (1297-1301). A second version, supported by many, wants the Castle to be the work of Nicollo Acciaiuoli from 1338 to 1341.
The castle is oriented from the north-west to the south-east and is in an extremely supervisory position. The floor plan of its surviving part is trapezoidal and measures 25 by 42.5 meters. In about the middle of each of its three sides, there is a two-story tower with one or more battlements. On the north "slanted" side, there is at the base of the tower a door to a small room which may have been a storage room, as well as the castle cistern.
Outside the tower there are three battlements, one for each side of it, while two windows can be seen on the floor. And in the southeast tower there are three windows and two battlements, one towards the outside and the other towards the inside of the tower. Due to the slope of the ground, the foundation of this tower required side embankments at its base. The smaller tower to the south-west appears to be simply attached to the outer side of the fort. There are certainly several later interventions from the remodeling of the Frankish castle. Its northeast side is damaged.
After the Frankish occupation, the castle of Mila is mentioned again in the Kleftarmatolic period, in the memoirs of Theodoros Kolokotronis. The passage concerns his pursuit by Deli-Ahmet in 1803:
"(...) Another time we went to Tsefereminis and the Turks of Androusi found out about us and moved a centimeter to beat us. We came out, initiated them and they were scared to escape. The same was the case in Mila the Paleokastro, between Mila and Bouga in Messinia. We fought all day and at night we escaped from them"...
Moreover, it is no coincidence that the name "Paleoklefto" is mentioned as the name of the castle by the "Expédition scientifique de Morée" in 1830-31. Of course, one cannot determine in time the use of the castle by the Turks, since as we see in the text of Tercetis, in 1803 during the persecution of kleftarmatism, "Mila's Paleokastro" was abandoned.
Then the castle must have been manned by the Turks and held until the great uprising. That is why it is mentioned in the "Atlas del' Expédition scientifique de Morée" that the castle was finally abandoned in 1825.
Isabelle's Chateau-Neuf, Theodoros Kolokotronis' ephemeral tambourine, "Paliokastro" or "Paleoklefto", stands there deserted, naming only the small settlement on the low hill near the village of Mila.
