    After years of trial and error, I’ve finally found the best and most consistent way to make great coffee. For me it’s using an AeroPress.
    But I also have some tips on making better coffee no matter what coffee brewer you use. After all, the best cup of coffee is the cup you like.

    My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
    Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.

    It's the bean, the soil where the beans are grown that matters. That's why I like beans from Papua, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Sumatra. It's the soil, followed by filtered water. The rest is easy. I like to pour hot water through a coffee filter and drip it. My mom had a percolator in the 1950s. I worked at the Holiday Inn as a waitress in the 1970s. I learned we throw out the coffee after one hour because the oils from the coffee separate from the coffee and float on the surface, creating bitterness. Toss it off. Usually most people drink their coffee right away when it is quickly brewed.

    Scott…I hv never made a real good cup of coffee till I started watching your channel, I think I started near a year ago when your channel came up in my feed after looking for Van Lifers and somehow finding Steve Wallis. I thought the AeroPress was kinda pricey for just a cup of coffee but I love my cup of coffee right when I get up in the morning! I was using a French press before and it was just ok. I also bought the hand grinder but I’ve been lazy and buying ore-ground coffee. Even the pre-ground is so good in this thing!

    If I were to a “French Press” type method I guess I’d be interested an Arrow Press, but I have settled on plain old fashioned “pour over” on good coffee grounds in a #2 paper filter into my mug. The only variation is using an OXO reservoir over a cone so I can put all the hot water in reservoir tank at once to let it slowly drip through the coffee. That frees me up to get out the cream. I think the most important thing is selecting a good coffee bean you enjoy, and you’ve shared about that on your other videos. When I travel I like to try out different coffees at a roaster because they often have several different kinds available to pour. Then get a bag for the rest of my trip. At home, making my pour over is my version of the Japanese tea ceremony. ☕️☕️☕️

    Scott - Happy Saturday !!
    Have you ever experimented with the AeroPress titanium screens?
    I used Aeropress for years, starting from their beginning. But I have only a fraction of your experience with light-roast.
    May I share to you that I began to seek a brew procedure that helps me optimize extraction that will give me the prospect of including a coffee berry's favorable essential oils (but obviously not to the point of getting bitters).
    IDK, maybe you don't even care for the oils flavor? maybe that is among reasons you prefer light roast?
    But for weeks I experimented with extraction through the metal, rather than paper, because I believed fresh clean paper may be trapping (stealing) some of my desired oils flavor.
    I like you posting about coffee. You're a Kitchen Lab Scientist on a mission to get what you like and willing to explore - you'd be sorry you got me started. It's quite personal, but not to intimate LoL

    • @StaticCamperVan
      @StaticCamperVan  Před 25 dny +1

      The metal filters aren’t good for me because they require rinsing. And I have to keep my water usage down. Some oils do get through the paper filters. That’s why some people double up on the filters. I prefer the flavor of filtered coffee.

    Thank you so much for this demonstration. Based on your previous AeroPress use, I bought one at Walmart and have been trying to figure out the best way to use it. AeroPress should hire you! I also bought a little coffee grinder a while back similar to what you use. How do you determine how many beans to grind for 1 cup of coffee? Maybe that's where the scoop that came with the AeroPress would help me in measuring out whole beans?

    I love my aeropress. I have a nice hand grinder too. One thing you might want to try is cold brew. Do the inverted method you use but add cold water then set it aside in the fridge to brew. Overnight if you can. You need to really trust that the seal is 100% water tight! Then press as usual in the morning. It makes a superb morning coffee, very different to any hot brewing technique. This method suits a light to medium roast.
    Another way to do cold brew in a camping situation is to add your coffee and water to a ziplock freezer bag and leave that in the fridge. Then filter through a poor over. That's a lot more messy than the aeropress though and creates more waste/trash.

    Have you ever used a Moka Pot? French Press? Your press has a filter so you won't have grounds in your brew.

    Thanks for posting this. I need to try a 4 minute brew when I make my next cup tomorrow morning. I typically do 1 minute but otherwise, I do the same inversion technique. You also press much faster than I do. I hear pressing fast leads to "channeling" which results in more bitter coffee. Have you had this experience and if so, how much faster than what you were doing is too fast? Is there a difference in speed for you between when you are pushing water through and the end when you're pushing mostly air through? I think I use about half the grounds and half the water you do for a single serve portion. So my air pushing phase is likely longer than yours. Finally, I like to press firmly at the end to squeeze out the grounds into the cup. I think I get more flavor that way. Do you do that and if not, why do you avoid it? You sort of talked about it in the video but I wasn't sure I understood correctly since you were talking more about the cleanup process.
    Great video. I think it's fun to geek out about brewing techniques. Some day I'll get a scale.

    • @StaticCamperVan
      @StaticCamperVan  Před 25 dny +2

      I’ve not noticed any difference in taste using a faster plunge. I don’t think there’s any issues with channeling as long as the coffee and water get stirred together well. All the brewing is being done in the four and a half minutes. After that, the coffee is simply being pushed through the filter.
      The only time I don’t give a very firm press at the end is if I mistakenly brew past four and a half minutes. In that case, I’ll do a lighter press so as to not push the bitter oils through the filter.

    • @OutdoorTraveler
      @OutdoorTraveler Před 25 dny +1

      That makes a lot of sense. The people who were talking about the channeling also didn't do the full stir, but I stir like you. Ok, next time, 4 minutes. Then the next next time, faster plunge, then I'll combine them if all goes well. Thank you!

    Sadly I think my taste buds are toast when it comes to coffee. I have been drinking it black, so strong the spoon almost stands in it, for so long that when I even add a splash of milk it makes the coffee sickly sweet, much less adding an actual sweetener. Some of the fine, highly rated coffee shops in the area taste like 'ashtray water' to me. It is a shame that coffee has become so utilitarian in my life.
