  • In this video, i teardown a JF506E out of a Jaguar(trans came from the local jaguar dealership) complaint of no reverse, i find the low drum broken in this unit. This trans is also known as O9A, found in V/W. The transmission is used in land rover and mazda vehicles as well.

    The reverse clutch drum replacement will fix it. My 2002 MPV had the issue at 120k. I found a used one on eBay but the reverse slips after just few weeks. At least I can drive forward.

    hi Gary, my names Ben. I have just put a used tested jatco jf506e box into my v6 Ford galaxy as i bought the car faulty and knew i had to do this. the tested box has not been serviced but i have checked the level and colour of the oil, it doesn't smell too burnt but is a dark brownish red. what should I do regarding changing the oil and filter? regards Ben.

    ⚠️We just stripped one in situ ready to upgrade reverse piston. (box was loosing drive after 10 mins when oil got warm)
    Main shaft had sheared so it was game over for that box.
    The was only a minute trace of silver paint in the oil.
    It's amazing this box had any drive at all ⚠️

    Many thanks for informative video. Did it still have drive in 4th & 5th ??
    My 2002 Rover 75 began flaring between 3 - 4 shifts - very mildly at first but quickly worsening. Cracked reverse / high clutch, piston & drum were replaced.
    If caught early the operation can be carried out easily without removing the trans. from the car. If allowed to progress 4 -5 fwd and reverse drive will eventually be lost and a full rebuild needed.
    The work was successfully carried out by a specialist in North East England for the £ equivalent of around $1000 US Dollars.

      Cracked pistons is no or slips when hot in 3rd or 4th, sometimes you can't see the crack in the drum. Thanks for sharing

    How shall I fill up the torque converter after I fully discharged (due to replace) ?
    Is there any secret to this? If I'm right the oil resupply is from the center shaft from the gearbox , so it will work that way If I put the whole value into the trans and wait on idle until it filling up itself?

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  Před 5 lety

      If empty put 5 quarts down through the filler tube, start the car and the pump will pick up the oil, after running add more oil til full. You have the dipstick tool to measure fluid

    I'm just about to dig into my Jaguar's transmission. The issue is the car drives forward in all gears including neutral and reverse. When I put it in reverse it feels like engaging into reverse but then jumps forward and drive forward perfectly shifting trough all gears fine no slipping or hesitation. No fault codes at all anyone could guess what went wrong? Maybe just seized up clutch pack?

    I just had my Freelanders transmission rebuilt , it drove ok for about 30 miles afterwards, I then drove it on sand for about two hundred yards and it suddenly lost all drive , got towed back to the workshop and now the mechanic is trying to say it's my fault because I drove on sand ! It's not like the car was stuck in the sand or even struggling , it just lost drive. I managed to drive it off the sand but it felt as if the brakes were coming on every few seconds, there was no reverse gear at all. Did you ever hear anything so ridiculous ? I paid over $1000 for the initial repair. Thanks for your video .

    A very interesting strip down.
    I have this gearbox in a 2002 Rover 75 attached to a BMW 2000cc diesel engine. Mileage is about 140000.
    The shift between, I think, 4th and 5th occasionally was slow. By that I mean the engine revs would increase and the gear wouldn't engage until I lifted the throttle. Eventually the gearbox lost all drive and failed on the road side. I stopped, let the car cool down for 5 minutes and tried to drive on. First fear would engage, the car moved forward for a few seconds and drive was lost again. I repeated this process until the car was in a safe position.
    Any clues as to what may have failed?

      @@quintalyurts8192 There is a common problem with this trans, the high clutch piston does crack which will cause slipping in the higher gears 3rd,4th and 5th
      The trans has to come apart, have to separate the bell housing from the main case

    • @quintalyurts8192
      @quintalyurts8192 Před 5 lety

      Thanks for the replies Gary. I don't understand your description of 'high clutch piston' but I suspect it's not one of the two located on the solenoid assembly (forward and reverse?) which I've heard can also crack. Ive found an online Jaguar Technical manual for the gearbox but I haven't studied it closely yet. It's a big like "War and Peace". 😀
