Sly Cooper Series: Greatest Villain? Clockwerk Backstory, Theory and Discussion!

  • Is Clockwerk the greatest villain of the Sly Cooper Series? Clockwerk appeared in Thievius Raccoonus and has cursed the Cooper family for many generations.
Clockwerk was defeated in Sly Cooper 1. Clockwerk's ultimate goal was to get rid of every single Cooper in existence. This villain was known as immortal. He has been spying and hunting every single Cooper for many years.
Clockwerk's parts appeared in Sly Cooper 2 Band of Thieves, where Neyla turned into Clock-La in the end. Carmelita finally destroyed the hate chip in the ending of Sly 2.
In Sly Cooper 4 Thieves in Time, Penelope escapes from prison, and her location is still unknown. Could she have time travelled? Could she be the one who built the metal parts for Clockwerk?
So far no Sly Cooper 5! Sly 4 ended with a cliffhanger, where Sly gets stranded in Ancient Egypt, perhaps at the time in which Slytunkhamen existed. Slytunkhamen is the Cooper who created the Thievius Raccoonus..
Could Clockwerk make a return in Sly Cooper 5 (if it happened)? Could Sly meet Clockwerk in Ancient Egypt, where he was born?

I just realized that the Clockwerk is a metaphor. When you are always fueled by jealousy and hatred, especially for someone, you become a shell of your former self. Clockwerk's metal body represents the hollowness of what he once was. And that I can literally last forever.

    here is my theory:
what if clockwerk and one of slys ancestors were rivials in love?
lets say that he was just a flower salesman or possibly a gardener. and he fell in love with someone. someone who was a love interest to the ancestor. anyway clockwerk does his best to impress the girl but he was just unable to complete with the Cooper family charm. so the ancestor stole the one thing that he loved. he eventually comes up with a plan to take her back. but something goes wrong and she dies. he then blames the Cooper for her death and gets consumed by anger and hatered and he swears to take away all that the coopers hold dear. just as they took away the one thing that he held dear.

  • @franciscorafaelmontielpale7854

I agree that Penelope is the one that gave him his upgrades. Since Clockwork is the only villain that got the best of the Coopers.
However remember that he is a criminal Master Mind... And him being rancor for the loose of a love one does not sound like him...
So according to the Cooper Vault, Sly first ancestor was him Egyptian ancestor ( which teach how to become invisible in the shadows). I believe that Clockwork was alive and organic during the Egyptian period. However I believe that in this time Clockwork might have actually been a sort of Advisor to the Pharoah, however being his back he was cruel and took advantage of People, stealing treasure. However the flowers would meant that the Pharo was dying and since he did not have any heir that would have mean Clockwork would be his successor. This did not look well specially for a special Raccon that might actually been the Pharoh’s bodyguard.
No doubt that Sly ancestor would have to outsmart a thief by becoming one. He stole Clockwork riches making him look like a thief in front of the people, causing the people to overthrown Clockwork and probably be buried alive as a mummy.
After such events Sly ancestor would have take a liking to being a thief and start the family tradition. However this where Penelope interferes, she rescues Clockwork from dying and propose him that she will give him power of immortality and powers far beyond his time. The outraged Clockwork will most likely accept it. No armed with incredible power he will probably slay his rival demanding where he hid his treasure only for Sly Ancestor to not reveal the secret. Through the years Clockwork would follow the Cooper for generations trying to find where the hid his treasure, only for the Cooper to alaways outsmart him, thanks to the Thieviud Raccunus... with time passClockwork finally discovered the existence of said book and since by this time Sly’s father is basically retired so he can raise Sly properly... Clockwork took his chance and attack the Cooper family and turn apart the book, believing that without it the Cooper clan will not again threaten his plans and finally have his revenge...
However you might be wondering, what does Penelope gets out of all of this... Well the same reason as Clockwork, that they can be defeated and broken, not to mention that she gets the satisfaction to have created the only villain no Cooper was able to defeat.

I just thought of a reason why clockwerk hates the coopers and possibly explains why they only steal from criminals. What if Clockwerk was a normal citizen, maybe even a respected member of society at the time, and it was announced he or even his child was getting married. Then at the wedding, something terrible happened that involved a cooper stealing from the wedding (like taking the wedding ring or the era's equivalent) and somehow either his spouse/child died in the event. That would be plenty good reason to be enraged and I bet that if a cooper was involved they would have seen the error in that and make it a rule amongst his descendants to never EVER steal from noble or innocent people to prevent another Clockwerk from being born.

    • @VtnVivi
      @VtnVivi  Před 7 lety +8

Sounds interesting. I do believe there's more to his story. Wanting to become the greatest thief known alive? Hunting Coopers for generations? There's something that happened back in ancient Egypt. It could've been a loved one involved, a child or even betrayal, he could've been friends with Slytunkhamen.

I like the thoughtfulness of your idea. It’s pretty cool and would make for a compelling backstory, if only the game didn’t emphasize Clockwerk’s jealousy of the Coopers and his desire to be an unrivaled master thief. I think those two things unnecessarily restrict how deep his potential backstory can be. I honestly think it really is as simple as “Clockwerk just wanted to be better than the Coopers.” That’s it, which I suspect the developers thought would be enough for a game directed at kids.

Going by the theory of Clockwerk possibly having somebody important to him at one point in time, you really need to think about what abilities that each members of the Fiendish Five made them eligible to be in Clockwerk's gang
There's a demolitions expert, possibly needed to excavate or blow open vaults, an enforcer with the responsibility to deal with any interference (with the likely interference coming from the Coopers), there's also a necromancer that can bring back the dead and a machinist whose skill was good enough that an immortal cyborg owl wanted him in his gang.
Looking at all that to me seems to imply that Clockwerk may have had a plan to find somebody that has been long dead, bring them back from the dead and make them immortal by turning them into a machine just like him.

  • @puffpuffpassmako

Even though its never explained why, I have a theory on why Clockwerk hates the coopers: they wronged him. Something tells me back when he was organic thousands of years ago, him and the Cooper clan used to work together. But something happened, like during a big heist, the Cooper that Clockwerk worked with left him behind to be caught, and stole all the credit and wrote Clockwerk out of the heist's history. Basically pulling an Ernesto De La Cruz from Pixar's Coco. Clockwerk never forgave and never forgot. That seems like a very plausible cause for his dedicated hatred. His jealousy came from the Coopers who wronged him living happily and successful while he was alone and forgotten. To be wronged by someone you loved and trusted, and finding out they left you and took credit for all the hard work you both did together. If this is the case, I understand why Clockwerk went insane and tried proving he was the better thief. And he made the Fiendish Five to replace his "old family" with a new one. And Clockwerk is thousands of years old, so he probably had multiple fiendish five groups over the years to help him rival the coopers for millennia

I'm actually working on a comic book series that comes 19 years after Sly 4. Following shortly after Sly's disappearance, Carmelita has Sly's child and names him Slick, who grows up to be a vigilante. He has 2 others in his gang, a honey badger named Trevor and a snowy owl named Melody.
Now Melody is an extremely important plot point because she's the most recent descendant of Clockwerk. Yes, he once had a family of his own thousands of years ago, who turned their backs on him when his ambitions clouded his judgement. A group of criminals managed to steal a sample of her blood and reincarnate Clockwerk into his original form and with a new and unknown power.
Slick and Melody ironically begin developing feelings for each other during the gang's journey, fighting side by side to the end.

What if Clockwerk is actually a cursed friend of Slytunkhamen
Clockwerk could've been a normal Cooper thief related to Slytunkhamen (like a brother or a best friend) who was working with Sly's ancestor to steal from a tomb when they were teenagers and Clockwerk got cursed and was turned into a giant bird. At first, the two of them take advantage of Clockwerk's new abilities and are to commit crimes a lot better because every criminal would be afraid of Clockwerk's new form. For a while things are fine, until the giant bird starts to feel used by his old friend and starts to question Slytunkhamen's friendship with him, eventually leading to Clockwerk starting to grow annoyed and frustrated and hate his new body. Before any of this though, Clockwerk had a lover who left Egypt because she was a spice trader and the two had plans to be married when she came back. She does return and sees what Clockwerk turned into. She was afraid at first, not recognizing him, but when she realizes it's him, she still stays with him. A few weeks later, Clockwerk and Slytunkhamen work out a plan to steal from a powerful, merciless, pharaoh and leave Egypt forever. Slytunkhamen would sneak in undetected while Clockwerk takes care of the guards and the pharaoh. This angers Clockwerk, believing he's being used as a tool once more. They argue for a bit, but Slytunkhamen apologizes to him for how he felt. Though not super relieved or even moved by it, Clockwerk accepts his apology and the two of them get ready for the heist. Things were going great: Clockwerk's massive size terrified the pharaoh and his soldiers to the point where they just ran or hid and Slytunkhamen managed to steal a lot of loot. They escape and Clockwerk grabs his lover and flies off with her and his "friend" to a safer location. They lay low for a bit until Clockwerk's lover is captured and sentenced to death by hanging. Clockwerk tried to save her, but was too late. Heartbroken and hurting, Clockwerk killed the pharaoh and his guards and tried to kill Slytunkhamen, but being the master of stealth, he escaped after he heard Clockwerk was coming after him for revenge. Enraged, Clockwerk flew off and wanted something to use for his plan of revenge. Enter Penelope, who (like you said), gave the tech he needed get his revenge, but instead of focusing it solely on Slytunkhamen, since he knew his skills already, he would travel through learning every single technique they used and continued watching the Cooper family. Eventually, Clockwerk formed the Fiendish Five and murdered Sly's parents perhaps in the hopes Sly would be too traumatized to follow in his dad's footsteps or he took the Justice from Afro Samurai approach and just let him go after him. But before he put his plan into action, Clockwerk buried his lover and like anyone who mourns over the death of a loved one, he left flowers at her grave, but these flower he altered so that they would never die much like his hatred for the Cooper clan. And maybe when he was defeated, his old self may have died, but somehow, either with science or black magic, the machine lived and waited for someone to put it back together so it could finish what Clockwerk couldn't. Hell, maybe Neyla could've been a descendant of Clockwerk before the curse and before he met the love of his life (just spit balling at this point) hence her sudden hatred towards Sly. In the end, this could be the sad and tragic story of Clockwerk.

I've read some good Sly Fiction where Clockwerk and Doctor M weren't that different from each other,
and that at one point, Clockwerk was a close friend with Slytunkamen until they had a falling out.
    That seems plausible.
Of course, I wonder if "Clockwerk" even is his real name,
or just an alias he decided to call himself once he took steps to become immortal.

    “I am”
    “Been selling”
    “Flowers”
    “Never”
    “Reality”
    “Belay”
    “I will become”
    “Feet together”
    “I will live”
    “Redirect energy”
“I am” seems like he was about to introduce himself.
“Been selling” and “flowers” could mean he had a job selling flowers. Maybe it was a real, humble job in the beginning.
“Never” “reality” ; these seem to me as if he’s realizing that an honest job can never live up to honest expectations since reality can be cruel.
“Belay” and “I will become” feel like he wants to preserve someone or something. And to do so he became a thief, but to truly protect from cruel reality means becoming the best.
“Feet together”. Now this is tricky. But I think we are all misunderstanding another possibility. What if it’s really “feat together” as in two or more people were in on a heist. Achieve amazing feats together, become the best. If so then I’m guessing he was there for when the first Cooper decided to become a thief. But something went wrong.
“I will live” suggests that, if he was a partner in a heist, he was the one that got caught while the Cooper didn’t. This sort of resentment, combined with the possible reason he started stealing to protect someone/thing, could lead up to “redirecting energy.” Putting all his protecting energy into hatred, becoming consumed with it. Turning from beginning thief to obsessive over the ones who did him wrong.
If the belay was for a person then I’m guessing they’re long since dead. But if it’s for a thing... gotta question: what was it?

There's a thing that i always keep thinking when i hear about Clockwerk.
In sly 2, the cooper gang managed to get all the clockwerk parts except for 2. The tallons and most importantly , the brain.
Arppegio is known to have clockwerk's brain. But he most likely didn't use it when he was rebuilding clockwerk's body since he wanted the owl's body for himself..

If penelope really did trick out an owl with advanced robotics with immortality or worse made herself into a soulless (hence the voice that wouldn't sound like her) robotic owl as a symbolic predator toward sly then I can kinda see how things would fall into place where she plots to simply kill the cooper clan in it's infancy but instead gets defeated by each ancestor thus fueling the ever growing hatred needed for immortality. By the time she reaches sly in the events of Sly 1 though, hundreds of years worth of hate and failures at the hand of the coopers warp her original objective, thus becoming obsessed with the notion of proving that the coopers were "nothing" while trying to become the greatest thief which kinda aligns with the whole reason why she betrayed the group in the first place.

In Sly 4, the fact that we can see Clockwerk probably means he can see us. He saw the Sly, Bentley & Murray trying to save the Thievious Racconus, he saw them helping the Cooper family, and ancestor by ancestor, he discovered they where doing this because of the book, and thought that it was so important that can destroy all the Cooper clan. He probably thought that if a Cooper literally made a time machine for saving it, he can use the book to destroy the Cooper clan. So he waited thousand of years only for taking informations, studying and waited the birth of Sly. That's why he attacked the exact day Sly was going to take the book. I think the problem isn't the Cooper clan, but Sly himself... Because Sly is the time traveler, the one who ruined him and all for the book, he killed with cold blood Sly's father, if he wanted to punish a random Cooper he would have made the Fiendish five hundreds of years before... But not, he waited for Sly, on a specific day...

I have a theory on who Clockwerk was before. Maybe he shares a similar origin to that of Andross from Star Fox. Clockwerk was once an anthro owl who was in love. Remember when Nyla jumped into Clockerk's head and then Clock-la was born, I think Clockwerk did the same thing. That does explain why Clockwerk never awoken after he was fully assembled. The animation we saw in sly 2 could only have been what Sly thought Clockwerk was before he became Clockwerk. Now here are my theories on what his words could mean.
"I am... Been selling..." I think that he was once a Salesmen. And a rougue Cooper (Whom is never brought up in history as he probably went against his family and used his skills for evil) stole from him, not just his merchandise, but also stole something very important to him.
"Flowers" could mean either wedding or funeral. Maybe the rougue Cooper killed his love life or even his parents, so that could be what he meant by "Revenge is the prime ingredient."
"Never" could mean he will never surrender to the Coopers. Maybe he was hallucinating to his own time and seeing his true enemy.
"Reality" I think it's him trying to forge his own reality by having his revenge then living in peace or it could be he saw all Coopers as a threat to all people as the rougue Cooper was his enemy and didn't want to accept that all other Coopers were good as the family book had read.
"Belay" maybe when Clockwerk was an Anthro and couldn't fly, he loved Mountain climbing as a hobby as belay means to secure a person or a rope to an anchor point.
"I will become" could mean what he said in the second phase of the battle. A master thief. Or could also mean he was once going to be a father and his wife was pregnant before she died.
"Feet together" could mean a dance. I think he was enjoying his wedding with his wife. They were dancing when the rougue Cooper crashed the wedding and maybe trapped Clockwerk's wife but couldn't save her in time. That would explain why he trapped Carmilita in the first place.
"I will live" I think that is his last shred of humanity as he wants to live and not die. Robots normally don't know the meaning of the words live or die as they don't show fear of dying. Clockwerk was fighting to live which showed he was still his old self despite being a giant robot.
"Redirect Energy" I think that was his cyborg self completly repairing his verbal sub routines so that could explain how he was talking normal again in his final moments.
These are only my theories but maybe The Coopers had a few bad clan members and had kids but choose to follow their ancestors' honorable path. But Clockwerk didn't see it that way. I hope we find out more on the cyborg owl.

    • @VtnVivi
      @VtnVivi  Před 4 lety +2

As for Clockwerk not waking up in Sly 2 I believe it has to do with the missing brain. I also believe the Cooper Clan isn't what we believe, one of them could've been ''bad'', I mean surely a Cooper had more than one kid. I loved reading your theory!

A single working computer, with could understand ancient egyptian, is all clockwerk really needs to begin to understand how technology works. The process to becoming a machine would have taken time, but with the blimp, he could slowing replace his body parts, till he becomes who we know hate and love.

Not likely, paradox is out of the picture and Penelope is not likely to go back in time to help clockwerk because there is no clear info of where, who and when clockwerk was born. Egypt is just the longest we know hes been alive.
So no, odds of someone in the future helping clockwerk are nearly none. Unless they just say that there is another time machine used by another master criminal that just happens to want to help one of the worst villans.
But even that creates a time paradox, has bentley only made the time machine thx to penelope, and they met because of sly.
Sly only met bently because clockwerk killed his parents.
So has you can see by this long text. The story is close to having time paradox.
Its why i think clockwerk staged his death, so there wont be a paradox has to how he became what he is now.
And lets be real, clockwerk likely has a means to still live even sould his body be destroyed. Its immortal bad guy 101. Like voldmort.

I wonder if the movie will touch on this. For such a major character it's pretty odd we know actually so little about Clockwerks background

Clockwerk was just an easter egg right? Him in 10 000 BC could mean nothing really. Were species that smart enough to be able to turn themselves into metal? Plus metal forging was a thing around Slytunkhamen's time.

VTNVIVI I think clockwork is a owl and owls may have longevity in sly's universe or (as u said in another vid) he had magic and lived to ancient Egypt. Met someone from the future or may sly's kid timed traveled to the past and became clockwork. That's y he never killed the kids.

One thing I just can't understand: Why did Penelope turn on Sly and the others? I mean, he never really did or said anything to her to warrant this change. And I know she said to Bently that he shouldn't have to live in Sly's shadow and he could be better without him, but again, that still doesn't make sense to do what she did. Also, Sly was pretty much retired from thieving when all of that started going down. It just doesn't make any sense. Am I missing something here?

What we're missing here is more background on Penelope's betrayal, I understand where you're coming from.

If Clockwerk perhaps had something he could see into the future, and with it he saw both the success of the Coopers in theft and the technology of the future, thus learning how to develop and use it

    Here’s my theory of Clockwerk:
Clockwerk was in love with another creature, and during an incident, Clockwerk’s lover was killed by a Cooper. This fueled him with hate for the Cooper Clan, and Penelope gave him blueprints and schematics for the robotic owl appearance. Penelope also gave Clockwerk a time machine to go back in time and (maybe) kill the Cooper ancestors because of what one of them did to his lover.

  • @notarealspy4090

The theory is way too out there to be very believable
Plus how does sly know about clockwerks plans if he only saw him once as a child, a very brief moment as well

I'd like to see a future Sly Cooper game where Clockwerk is the main character and we see how he was mistreated by an early cooper and how he came to turn himself into a cyborg in order to puruse the future coopers.

  • @thefrogthatknows5251

    I thought this was obvious???
Whatever slight against him must have occurred back in prehistory, as he is seen in that stage of Sly 4.
The prehistoric ancestor was said to have been stealing *EGGS*.
Owls lay eggs, and it's the earliest we see him. He was *robbed* of a legacy, so he sought to rob them of theirs.

I'm unsure where you got your definition of "belay"; it does mean to secure something, but usually in the sense of tying a rope around a cleat or hook to secure it. It also is used to mean "halt" or "cease", i.e. "belay that" means "stop that".

  • @ReasonableTim

What if his last name was Hooper? We all know that Coopers were barrel makers, but the rings on the wooden barrels were made by Hoopers. Plus, Clockwerk shoots metal rings, which suggests they might've worked together.
