It's been ripped for a cassette Simon and suster use to cheep out on them if they also only did really limited production runs so the tape this came from would be from 1996. If you interested in the 90's era star Trek audio books the is a good selection on Scribd (but you have to pay) from the original recordings

It reads like a young adult or youth novel, which it very much might be* There is some really bad decision making in this story and it bugs me to the point that I like it less. For example: Riker, Data, and LaForge take a standard shuttle, with no disguises, no plan, and presumably in their Starfleet uniforms and cross the neutral zone and beam down to a Romulan base. What? That is so idiotic. Why not have a special operations shuttle, use physical disguises and go in with a better plan. It's like a 12 year old wrote it. They could have taken control of the Yorktown. Or better yet, approached the Romulans and say that Scotty is a delusional rogue captain who stole the ship and they are here to arrest him and take him back toFederation space. Also, the idea that a 145 year old admiral could just relieve the captain of the flagship because the captain is following orders provided by Starfleet itself is also quite silly. Captain Picard would not be having that, he would have thrown McCoys butt in the brig before giving up command to a figurehead admiral who has a background in medicine, not command, who essentially wants to start a war because of his personal relationships. Come on. And those Romulans have the intelligence of a pug. Honestly, this is terrible writing. Expected more.
