- The Swedish version of Leopard 2 (Stridsvagn 122) was chosen as the best Main Battle Tank of all time (so far) by the Discovery Channel. The MBTs in this movie are from P 4 Skaraborg Regiment and is usually manned by conscripts doing 12 months of service. The crews learn how to operate, drive and maintain the tank while others learn how to recover and repair it in the field. Conscription will be abolished in Sweden by summer 2010.

@@simonjwiklund Sweden has over 95% (IIRC 96%) of the iron in the whole of western Europe. So we were absolutely not neutral during WW2. If our iron exports stopped, so would the Wehrmacht eventually unless they invaded Sweden (which they probably would in that case). But I wouldn't be so sure it would be so easy for Germany to invade Sweden without Sweden managing to sabotage their iron mines in the north before the Germans get there. The war wouldn't last nearly as long without Swedish iron. But ultimately, the Wehrmacht failed primarily due to their horrible logistics and lack of oil.
SSAB is a swedish company that delivered the steel armour for the swedish leopard 2, the turrent is made by Bofors (license), chassi and final integration Hägglunds. So the tank are swedish made + german design = awesome.

@yourass117 The reason the cannon is facing up after being fired is to get into the so-called “charge mode”. This is an adjustable position in the carriage, adapted to the charger's individual requirements. The charger sets the mode to move as quickly as possible to be
able to load the next shot.

They changed alot. Better armored, better fire control, changed suspension, communication tech and added French smoke launchers. Invisible to IR in the newest models.

@Morran09 I wouldn't say most stuff is gone, the main gun is German, the MG's are German, the engine is German, the band tracks are German, the transmission is German, the range finder is German, the gun sights and commanders sights are German. The main difference between the Strv 122 and the standard Leo 2A5 is the armor and the tactical command and control system, our tanks also have French smoke dispensers from Galix.
@ThugCologne - Well technicly the shell is indeed German, but when we've bought them they replace the gun, boost the engine, exchange the navigation, aiming and com equipment. Its practicly "Swedish" afterwards, we've just built it on top of the German platform. And we export some of them back to you =3
The hull is so much more different than the 2a5 u can easily tell
Yeah standard 2A5 has protruding mudguards but the 122 has so much addon armour that the front is completely straight.
Another area is on top of the turret where there is a very noticeable bulge.
@TheZooomm We can and we have. We made the S-tank which were ok. But developing a tank is far more expencive than just buying one. Pluss there is an advantedge when it comes to spair parts to use an international tank.

@Erfaroth Ja, det är lite märkligt att t o m på Challenger 2 så valde de den modellen. Britterna är iofs konservativa och de har länge haft doktrinen att det inte skall skjutas för mycket. Även bland infanteriet vilket låg till grund för designen på L85A2.

Why is the front protruding so much, covering some of the barrel?
The Strv 122 was probably the world’s greatest MBT at the time when Discovery aired the program. Now there are some iterations of the Loepard 2 and the M1A2 (and I guess the Leclerc and the Challenger 2) that is as good or better. I did my military service (at P7) as a driver of one of these bad boys so I’ll just clarify some of the comments.
The armor of the 122 is as good as the A6, if not better (thicker roof and hatchets).
Maintenance of this system is extensive, as on all complex system, when in service we rarely had the night of (approx. 07.00 - 20.00 every day).
The 122 has the L55 main gun.
The engine is a sturdy V12 twin turbo, the M1A2 and Challenger 2 has gas turbine engines. The main disadvantages of the turbine are that the exhaust is directed upwards due to the engine design, i.e. very easy to detect with passive IR, it looks like a torch, (standard equipment on all modern tanks and helicopters). It also has bad range in real combat situations with a lot of idling.
The command system in the strv 122 is GPS independent, i.e. you won’t have to rely on another nation for the system to work.
29 units was built in Germany by KMW, 91 was built in Sweden by Hägglunds.

Den har inte L55, vapenvaggan är däremot förberedd att kunna ta emot L55. L44 sitter just nu, och kommer nog sitta ett tag till, vi har ingen använding för 1.3m extra längd att peka runt med i våra svenska skogar

I think i saw something some time ago that the Danish Army was going to send some Leopard 2-tanks to Afghanistan.
But that was not the 122-version, but some other they use in Denmark.
Apparently, you don't know what simulations mean, there's been comparing between the models, testing of the armor as well as the main gun, testing in reality and doing advanced computer simulations through the defense simulators. It's not like playing a video game if that's what you thought.

Nowadays, we have things like the Leclerc XLR, M1A3, Abrams X, Challenger 3, Leopard 2A7V, Leopard 2A8, KF51 Panther, Type 10/TKX, and more.
However, most of the tanks I listed above are not currently in service, and almost all are equivalent to the Strv 122B+ in capabilites, which is also not in service.
So, overall, this is still a pretty solid tank choice.
(Also a bit of a tangent about late cold war MBTs, but the CATTB, Panzer 87-140 (Swiss 2A4 with a 140mm), Black Eagle/Object 640, Strv 2000, and the Leclerc T4 "Terminateur" would've blown the Strv 122A/Baway by sheer firepower and armour because heavily inflated cold war military budgets)

@@Jonathan-gl6iv Just a few parts of the tank is a leopard. Sweden rebuilt the whole tank to make it better. So no its not a leopard tank, Just the tracks and engine.

Vad krävs det för att få vara besättning i en stridsvagn? Hur söker man en sådan tjänst och vad heter den ens? Jag har sökt GSS/T på P7 i Skåne, finns det möjlighet att eventuellt hamna i en stridsvagn då?

Do u understand that the strv 122 is based on a Leopard 2A5, while Germany is currently currently using the Leopard 2A7 and between the two there are more or less 20 years of development. Also not taking into account all the most recent and upgraded tanks from other nations such as the M1A2 SEPV3

@@kevstermeister4662 again, the strv (based on the 2A5) is still a 20 years old tank (23 to be precise) at the time of this upload the new 2A6 had already been in service for 3/4 years and a new variant was already been worked on (2A7), furthermore other nations had very capable tanks at the time, M1A2 (and all of its variants), Merkava mkIV, T-90, Leclerc and others

@@kevstermeister4662 probably because it is from a Swedish source (idk who because I don't speak Swedish and I can't tell if it is a part of their army or something else), thus they would have said that they have the best tank. Btw that's the reason of my dislike to the video and my first comment. All of this not considering also the whole aspect that there is no "best tank in the world", every tank is designed to meet some specific requirements, that will change from country to country, from person to person, like in the case of the Merkava or the modern Japanese MBTs, those tanks were designed to fight with those armies, thus they have those characteristics (like the infantry rear door on the Merk), with tanks like in every other thing, there isn't an absolute good or bad, right or wrong, we all have different point of views
@@vale.44peru Just like the Germans making the 2a7 Sweden also makes new versions. Ever heard of the STRV 122B + Evo. It's an STRV 122 but with even more armour, capable of equipping an L/55. Although all STRV 122's can equip an L/55 as they were designed to be capable of doing so if needed.
En annan sak är att 103:an svjv tog en ohemul mängd verkstadsresurser i anspråk. den var helt enkelt för komplicerad för att vara driftsäker. det 'r ju en väldig massa parametrar som man måste ta hänsyn till, inte bara stridsprestanda.

Många länder kom fram till att en 105mm kanon är för vek för dagens pansar, och med tanke på 103'ans design så gick det inte att montera en 120mm kanon utan att modifiera stridsvagnen såpass mycket att det var lättare/billigare att köpa nytt.
Det är en av anledningarna, sen finns det självklart fler.

@Stromberg91 jag kolla lite, en gång i tiden köpte vi 150 Leopard 1 och 150 Leopard 2. Men sedan håller svenskarna på och meckar med dem och håller på med upgraderingar / moddning så jag har ingen pejl vad som står i garagen idag ....

Dock hade jag hört, från källor inom såväl amerikanska armen som andra (håller mig aktiv inom vapen och militärmateriell då det är ett framtida drömyrke.) att bytet från 105 till 120 var onödigt, då 120mm var onödigt kraftig för dåtidens behov, då ingen stridsvagn då tillverkad kunde stå emot varken en 105 eller 120, eller har jag helt enkelt blivit felinformerad då?
Skulle någon kunna länka mig till en sida där jag kan läsa vad för krav och utbildning jag bör ha om jag vill bli skytt, förare eller chef i en 122?

@MajSolo ja de får vi göra. Jag hittar inget om det. Har bara läst att experterna tycker att Challengern har den bästa kanonen som finns just nu. Bara för att den är räfflad. Tyskarna hade ju räfflade kanoner i sina stridsvagnar i ww2, samma med många andra allierade kanoner. Jag fattar det inte men det finns kanske en anledning, någon som kan detta bättre än mig kanske ja svara på detta

Självklart är det till din fördel som besättning på en Stridsvagn 122 och även i ett Stridfordon 90 att vara mindre då det är ganska trånga utrymmen.

The true test of a tank is in direct combat against another tank of its generation. The Leopard 2 must be tested against the M1A2, LeClerc and the Type 90.
jag bara måste fråga. Jag vet itne varför det är så här men någon kanske kan svara på detta. Varför sätter de inte en räfflad pipa i han så blir ju resultatet mycket bättre. Samma fråga kan jag ställa till M1an. Challengern har ju så mycket bättre vapen. Eller???
En kollega till mig berättade att det är väldigt eftertraktat att ha korta smidiga personer i en tank.

Nej den korrekta benämningen för vagnen är Leopard 2A5 alternativt Leopard 2(S) men Svenska benämningen är Stridsvagn 122 och är alltså den korrekta i Sverige. Tack för mig.
