    I think what sets the first invasion apart is that everyone (all soul reapers) are involved and not just lieutenants and captains. Seeing the lower ranked soul reapers engage in battle and lose easily really shows how devestating the invasion is. The huge casualties from the first invasion really show the ruthlessness of the Wandenreich

    For me, it comes down to the fact that the Wandenreich had a bunch of their heavy hitters come out swinging in this first invasion. From previous arcs, we always had a couple of fights against lower level (but still strong in their own right) enemies such as the Privaron Espada in Hueco Mundo and then the Fraccion in Fake Karakura then it ramped up to the major threats once they were dealt with.
    So to then get events like Kira getting one shot, the Bankai stealing and Byakuya vs As only a few chapters in, you knew these new guys weren't messing around. It felt like no one knew where Kubo's crazy ride was taking us.

After the first war, Yamamoto gained something he wanted to protect and became more ethical/law abiding. He no longer fights through willingly sacrificing the life of his men, he doesn't use any pawns to get ahead, etc. He doesn't even accept healing from Orihime because of his pride in that order.

    The 1st Quincy Invasion really cements that the safety nets we've seen from bankai, Genryusai, Kenpachi, Allon, Ichigo, etc; are not going to be enough to win against the Quincies. When I read this part of the arc, it stood out to me as the biggest “shit just got real” moment out of the entire series. It wasn’t a looming threat of war like the Arrancar attack or a big twist caused by Aizen’s trickery. It was just a giant wave of defeat crashing down on Soul Society and most of the main characters were powerless to do anything but suffer it. This was encapsulated by Byakuya, Kenpachi, and even Yamamoto getting obliterated. It took the parts of Bleach we took for granted as the “safe zone” and showed us it wouldn’t be enough this time.

    Just makes me wonder imagine if Byakuya was killed and in his last moments he’s practically pleading to Ichigo to save the soul society and from one big brother to another asks him to make sure nothing happens to Rukia. I’m not really a huge fan of major character deaths but in a war setting, things happen and people die and people become traumatized and some become emotionally unavailable. It would’ve further displayed just how badly the first invasion crippled the gotei 13 and were on their back foot for the entirety of the arc. Just like in real life when you deal a decisive blow to an enemy it makes it almost impossible for them recover.

    Yeah Kubo had those Quincy coming out swinging but it was expected, because he basically directly addressed one of the larger criticisms of Arrancar/FKT arc and the Lost Agent .
    Where the heroes never really felt like they were in any real danger for me, the only time I ever felt any real tension was the fight against Ulquiorra
    He totally rectified that in the eyes of many with the first invasion
    The only nitpick is I wish he stuck to the conceit of different projectile weapons for each Quincy, too few of them explicitly had it in their fighting repitoire, only Robert Accutrone, Lille Barro and Bazz B kinda?
    Too many of them had the similar Holy Bow, which felt a bit uninspired

    I totally agree, great analysis (as always), but I would like to ask one thing. Am I the only one who thinks that the FIRST QUINCY INVASION was strongly inspired by the beginning of the ZANPAKUTO'S REBELLION ARC?
    I mean, the ZRA started with 3 swords (Katen Kyokotsu, Sogyo no Kotowari and Minazuki) visiting the captain commander, and so did the quincies. Sasakibe was the first officer to battle and be defeated (off-panel in both version lol). Muramasa made a dramatic appearance inside the Seiretei, so did it Yhwach. In both cases, the enemies infiltrated without any problems nor being noticed, then they started to bomb and rampaging into the Seiretei (more scenic with the quincies, but similar too). The shinigamis suffered a first real defeat, especially because they were caught off guard in losing the powers of their swords (something simillar happened with the quincies with the steal of the bankais). Under very different circumstances, but after this, Ichigo arrived at the SS and had the first confrontation with the main enemy, and Kyoraku took the lead without Yama-ji (even if with Unohana and Ukitake in ZRA). Not to mention, that ZRA spoiled Gonryomaru abilites (Kubo wrote or copied those), Byakuya faced Senbonzakura (this make laugh a lot in the different ways he dealed against his own powers, winning on one side, being utterly crushed on the other), more than Sode no Shirayuki and Katen Kyokotsu designs (but this has nothing to do with the first invasion). I would also say that Muramasa and Yhwach share some points, excluding the intent to destroy the shinigami (a lie for both of them, the real goal was another), both were the source of the power of all their allies, Muramasa gave freedom to the swords (though he manipulated them) and Yhwach the letters to the quincies (with a price), both using them as pawns and betraying them in the end.
    Off course, probabily also cause it was a middle filler arc, the impact was lighter in ZRA, a defeat for the Gotei but without very serious consequences, while the FQI was much heavier, brutal, devastating, with much more serious consequences and subsequent impact. But the similarities between these first two parts are there, in my opinion. What do you think?

  • @varsoonhks3211
    @varsoonhks3211 Před 2 lety +1

    What is worth appreciating is that this only works as well as it does is because we have those previous arcs like the Arrancar Arc to establish the sense of introducing a new crew of antagonists that the Shinigami are expected to triumph over. Kubo shines best when playing with expectations that he has already set up and by mirroring certain structures, Kubo always knows where he has his reader and when to shake things up to keep it interesting.

I know he isnt the strongest character but his kind nature, his bond with his fellow Shinigami and his absolute love/respect for Yamamoto make him such an endearing character. And his arc in TYBW and how he gets revenge on Bambietta while sacrificing himself was such a great reading experience for me.The way saijin was able to receive a power up BUT have it be balanced out with such a great cost really set the standard for me regarding what the captain's powerups should have been, instead of the random power ups they got with no apparent effort or consequences (cough cough renji/byakuya). All in all, Komamura is an extremely underrated character and I cant wait to see him animated again in the anime :)

I’ll definitely be looking forward on the extended fights in the anime. I think one of the best parts about the first invasion is that the Quincy came in there and actually did something significant. They came in and decimated the soul society like it was nothing. No other arc starts off like that and that's why it's so impactful. It really helps that they were actually organized and a military force with a singular purpose. The arrancar weren't like that. The Espada weren't like that. It was really setting the fact that there are actual stakes in this arc and people were dying left and right. This part of the story in particular is probably my favorite of the entire series because of these reasons. The fact that I was genuinely worried about the soul society surviving says everything

    I love the first invasion because it's, at the same time, Bleach's troppiest (big fights, big flashy techniques), but also its most un-troppey and unpredictable, because the heroes have little to no plot armor. Invasion starts, Kira gets blasted. Quincies come in, steal 4 Bankais easily. Renji, Rukia and Byakuya get utterly trashed. Shunsui, who's always super chill loses an eye without mercy. Kenpachi comes in, kicking ass, but has his ass kicked soon after. Yamamoto goes all out in a rage, but is mercilessly killed by a mocking true Yhwach.
    It's such a wild ride. And I'm glad the anime is setting it in a cloudy day, with gray skies. I feel it captures the despair of this section well. And I hope the music delivers. Maybe start with the trumpet theme we heard in the trailer as the Quincies arrive and start killing fodder Shinigami in a montage, only to shift to a more familiar Gotei 13 theme as the Captains arrive, only to switch back to the war march music as the Quincies swiftly counter them.

    The war declaration where the lieutenant of squad 1 dies is an incursion, not an invasion. An incursion is a small unit sent into enemy territory to test the waters so to speak.
    So the first invasion is correctly called an invasion invasions are typically when a large force encroaches upon another groups territory typically firing the first shot.

  • @bw5020
    @bw5020 Před 2 lety +1

    I particularly liked this arc because unlike the Arrancar car Arc and the fake Karakura town ark, this felt like they were playing for keeps. People actually died. Like known characters bit the bullet. The threat level felt like they would not overcome. And if they did, it was by the skin of their teeth. Their first invasion in the story was so tragic that one Quincy, and not even one of the chosen, crushed the heads of two seated officers and mangled Kira, who isn't by any means a weakling, before homeboy even knew he lost 50lbs. The plot armor was looking kitten soft when Toshiro was getting wrecked, our favorite pervy captain lost an eye, Byakura made low, and and and.
    The Quincy seemed like some sort of particular human species that was strong but not strong enough to contend with soul society. Then you have these deviant quincies who not only mess up the balance of souls, but are not open to negotiation like the ones who were around when Uriyu's grandfather was kicking.
    These Quincy apparently traded principles for power, and honestly, if any of them are related to the Quincy that were killed by shinigami, I don't blame them.

    The only fight i really like, is the Komamura one, because even if he defeated Bambietta, it came with a sacrifice, and that fight had some stakes.
    Komamura could have his human form for a longer time, it's the first time he was somehow crucial in any kind of battle so Kubo really did him dirty since, while a supposedly dead Byakuya is galavanting in the Soul Society like nothing happened, but hey... it is what it is.

    11:06 I mean, Aizen was pretty much succesful on the SS arc since he got what he wanted; he killed Central 46, he tricked and betrayed everyone on the Gotei 13, he stole the Hogyoku and escaped to Hueco Mundo. Also Ulquiorra's group in the arrancar arrival arc was succesful on taking Orihime with them while disctracting Ichigo and the lieutenants.
    What you probably meant is that the villains weren't succesful in actually killing shinigami, thus giving a fair number of casualities compared to the quincies in the final arc, since in FKT almost all the arrancar died while the Gotei and the vizards remained intact.

Byakuya and Renji both lost in the most embarrassing and ridiculous way. Renji being too hot headed to win makes sense but calm, cool and collected Byakuya pulling out his bankai knowing damn well it’s going to be stolen instantly? That actually pissed me off 😂 Again, I still want to watch to the end bc it’s Bleach but just the beginning has already frustrated me beyond words. 6:00 the First Quincy invasion is kinda what they (the soul Society) thought was happening back in the mission to Rescue rukia and to be honest how poorly the gotei 13 handeled a few kids sneaking in should have been this massive warning to Yamamoto of how unprepared the gotei 13 was for anything real.
    yes luckly nothing came of Ichigo and his friend breaching the defenses but the fact they could was a problem then when they did the gotei 13 was running around like a chicken with its head cut off, they should have been rounded up within an hour and if im been brutally honest they NEVER should have gotten in in the first place not even with the help they got, also someone was able to build a MASSIVE cannon in range of the walls and no one spotted it been built?
    if i had been in old Man yamas place after that heads would have been rolling, ied already be furious at myself for not seeing thought Aizen's lies and that's would have been a driving force to whip the gotei 13 into shape and im a fairly laid back even lazy person (unless something catches my interest then ill put 1000% of myself into it)

    I think one of the critizisms that Kubo had against him was that his "good guys" never die or really get hurt. That's why this was also such a surprise. I did love this section, but I do like the second invation. I forget when it happened, but I loved when Ruckia gets her Banki and the converstatiin between here and Byakuya. That was fantastic. And the way he changed as well. I am probably well into the second invation, and I do like it. But, it got really weired. Not in a bad way. I am on chapter 650, so I know I am almost done. But this arc has been fantastic. I can't wait to to see it animated and see the new and extened sceens. But, selfishly, I hope that it is not over. I hope they turn No Breaths from Hell into a full arc. But if they did not, I would probably be very satisfied if it ends here, with this arc. I can't wait to see what happens.
