  • BBC Wales documentary, originally aired December 18th 2012.
    Aneurin Bevan (pronounced /əˈnaɪrɪn/; Welsh: [aˈnəɨ.rin]; 15 November 1897 - 6 July 1960), often known as Nye Bevan, was a Welsh Labour Party politician who was the Minister for Health in the post-war Attlee government from 1945 to 1951. The son of a coal miner, Bevan was a lifelong champion of social justice, rights of working people, and socialism. He was a long-time Member of Parliament (MP), representing Ebbw Vale in South Wales for 31 years. He was one of the chief spokesmen for the Labour party's left wing, and of left-wing British thought generally. His most famous accomplishment came when, as Minister of Health, he spearheaded the establishment of the National Health Service, which was to provide medical care free at point-of-need to all Britons. He resigned when the Attlee government decided to transfer funds from the National Insurance fund to pay for rearmament. He subsequently became the leader of the left wing group within the party, which came to be known as "Bevanite".
    Bevan remains one of Wales's most revered politicians. In 2004, over 40 years after his death, he was voted first in a list of 100 Welsh Heroes, having been credited for his contribution to the Welfare State.

    Nye Bevan oozed integrity, principals, passion, compassion and was taken too soon. His contribution to national life outlived him and proved his worth.

    A life devoted to two purposes: defending the defenseless, and uplifting those whom society would trample down. Today's politicians devote themselves to defending the indefensible and uplifting those who trample down society. Heaven help us.

      Few people really bother about Shakespeare, Newton was brilliant but he was not a nice man and his discoveries have minimal effect on daily life, Johnson...not Boris I hope, Darwin would be tough competition I agree, Milton, again.....how many people really benefit from him in their daily lives?
      Bevan, the NHS, 70 years of health compassion and care, millions of lives saved. Medicine without worry. Care without bancruptcy if you could afford it all .The essence of human empathy and goodwill to fellow men. None of your alternatives could ever match that. Sorry you are not one with that!

    • @daveroberts6685
      @daveroberts6685 Před 5 lety +2

      Bolocks. Greatness is about identifying needs for the common good and meeting those needs . If you are suffering from tuberculosis with no means of getting the care you require then Newton's gravitational equations, The Origin of Species or a Shakespeare sonnet will be devoid of any practical benefit at all. Such things are to be enjoyed when the fundamental anxieties of life are alleviated and the NHS has been mankind's most profound achievement in that regard. And the accolade must go to its creator, Aneurin Bevan, for all his flaws.

    I suspect I am now the only living relative of Archie Lush. My father and I used to pop in and see him in his house in Tredegar and I remember my mother saying you should have excused yourself from lunch ( I suspect not much of it about ). I remember it was cold lamb. In my first job at A C Daniels and Co - hospital equipment manufacturers I helped out on an exhibition stand at some Hospital Equipment Show in London. A C Daniels was a Jewish company and when they saw an Arab buying group the directors would run off the back of the stand and I'd be left to deal with these guys. The following day another group with. TV camera came on to the stand. "George" said a voice. "What are you doing here". Oh hello Uncle Archie said I. I was pounced on my Mr A.C. Mr Sid and Mr Lewis. Why didn't you tell us you were related to Sir Archie? Didn't think really.
    The last time I saw Uncle Archie was at my father's funeral in the late 60s. He had an Austin Cambridge A55 in Cream and Blue (the same as my first car )

    There should be a nati0nal Aneurin Bevan day in the UK. He is a national hero, not just a Welsh hero. The implementation of The National Health Service, under all that objection, suspicion, resistance and highly limited achievement in itself and is now the Crown Jewel of the United Kigndom.......how long his creation will be around for in it's current form, if at all, is now a key issue in British politics and a concern for the whole country.

      Oh what a sad sad time, it's May 2024.... 14 years of Tory gov't...... our great NHS is a shadow of what it was in 2010, (highest patient satisfaction ever,and scoring highly on international comparisons!!!)........
      Now today, is struggling with 14 years of Tory under-investment...... dental care unavailable to millions, GP appointments like hen's teeth, millions on waiting lists, hospital buildings crumbling,Victorian maladies on the rise!!! (Not the fault of the medical and nursing staff........Purely the corrupt greedy Tories.... (Scum!! he was right!!)
      A general election on July 4th 👏🙏🤞, and hopefully, July 5th will see Labour back again< and July 5th could be Aneurin Bevan day!!!!! 👏👏🎉🥳🎉

    If only our current crop of politicians in power in 2019 had his honesty to try change society from the current selfish me first policies of Thatcherism to the fairer society he strove for ,we,d all be a fairer more contented country but sadly Thatcher,s legacy is the order of the day.

    He was one of the greats but I don't understand his turning against Lloyd George... ..LG hated the aristocrats as much as 'Nye' himself. Also, he stabbed Churchill in the back when Britain was in a perilous state in 1942; It is not mentioned in detail in this film but his attacks on the PM were shameful when the country needed unity.
