This Game Shows Why They Banned Fury

- Fury was recently banned in the modern format. We played a game of Murktide VS Scam before the bannings. How bad can it really be, right?

I just wanna say that, beyond welcoming back non-Commander content for a time (which I generally prefer), I really appreciate the editing in this one. Fading into that ending music as Andrea drew his last card was just a golden moment.
Editing is really nice. A pleasure to watch! ❤
Cardmarket keeps stepping it up with their editing and animations. I wanna highlight this Unholy Heat at 3:00
Look at this! All the relevant triggers are neatly off to the side. They just show reminders because they already showed us the cards and respect our 3min memory. The game keeps going, and a little extra fire animation. Nice!
That second game was so stressful! I could feel the pressure on Mengu, good to see Fury is in its rightful place
It's always a joy to watch two professionals play against each other! Their plays are just so... efficient. There is no wasted motion or word and they always seem to know exactly what to do and when. Very cool.
Kinda glad to see Fury gone from the format though, hopefully this will let other decks and strategies show off more
Wdym, a removal spell and a 4/4 on turn 1 seems perfectly balanced!
The real scam is the length of the videos with scam in it.
😂
This also has no interviews other than the side boarding
Please more show matches! I just love to see magic gameplay in many different formats with cool and interesting decks, or just the meta
love watching these paper magic videos. beyond the super-high quality editing, it is a small detail that i love: that "snap" of real cards as you lay them on the table. i never get to play paper magic anymore and that sound evokes quite positive memories for me
Fury went adios and it will not be missed
Too bad rakdos scam is still powerful and won last weekend. The issue is all the evoke elementals not just fury.
@@ASaturnaliait’s still powerful. It is also weaker. As it should be. In this case, it dodged most of its bad matchups.
@@laurelkeeper still think grief and solitude need to be looked at. Keep the archetype as a midrange deck, that’s fine. Bowmasters and sheoldred and Ragavan are powerful but also fine for the most part. The play pattern for evoking is a huge issue (granted I couldn’t tell you what the green and blue one do)
@@ASaturnalia green is graveyard hate and blue is an essence scatter that tucks instead of countering and hits planeswalkers
Of course it won't be missed... because in about a week we're gonna get something even more broken to force rotation and nobody will remember Fury...
Love seeing Andrea on Cardmarket! Always so fun to watch and he has such a great attitude. Would love to see more of anything with him, but pauper would be awesome if possible!
I did miss when you stopped doing feature matches, hope for more like this in the future
I very much enjoy these straight forward games. Pauper next?
seconding more pauper play
Supporting the motion for more Pauper.
User submitted Pauper!
Always more Pauper
Bolstering the call for Pauper!
Insane how fast these games play out
Love seeing this kind of content!! Hope for more Modern but with rank 1 or 2 decks (missed the comments and players insight inbetween games)
That "subtle" Wilhelt scream on Subtlety was great 😂😂😂
I never thought I'd see a match where I'd root for delver but goddam that shit was busted.
As I was typing about the title grammar it auto fixed. The new live view and like feature pretty good to update videos while watching
Great video, love watching these two play.
Hey Cardmarket, this Mengu fella seems pretty good at magic, maybe you should suggest to him to get into the tournament scene
Game two was really good! The way Izzet stabilized was fantastic, but out of curiosity, why did Andrea spam ledger shredder on 2 instead of holding up counterspell mana? We could have waited until 4 to play a protected ledger shredder, eat their fury with counterpell, and try to grind instead of tapping out across from a deck known for removal options. No hate just trying to learn!
Just some misplays. In my opinion game two had a number of mistakes- pitching fury off shredder, not holding the channel land, not holding up interaction. Using subtlety instead of counterspell on sheoldred
my guess is that he was already mentally defeated by the scam@@andesmountain9178
wow what a quick intro, was it styled as such for the quick games?
5:46
"is the card good?"
with that giant smile on Thoralf face are priceless
Any place to find the music used in this video? The song in match 2 around 8:00 was pretty good
Thoralf and mengu sharing sideboard information gave me a video idea, have a best of 3 game in wich the opponent chose what to side in and out each others decks, so basically instead of making your the deck better for the match you attempt to make the other deck worse for it.
Love this kind of content (but also hate Rakdos scam)
P.S. idk if Jamin is reading this but it was great to meet you in Stuttgart!
I do read comments occasionally (though not as often as Carl). Thanks for stopping by at the Regional!
-Jamin
Please more non-commander content, I love it!
At the beginning of Game 2 Andrea cracked a fetch land and didn't take the 1, is the jump cut there becouse you noticed it in the editing? Non the less rly good video 🎉.
If wizards banned grief and solitude I don’t think anyone would be mad
I feel like solitude at least keeps decks in check that need it. It is a one for one that deals with creature combo decks and still gives people life back so it isn’t too disadvantageous
@@AlecationsGrief is just Ego Drain (thoughtsieze) on a stick, Solitude is just Swords to Plowshares on a stick. They both exist as answers to keep brittle combo or synergy decks in check, and they're not a problem... unless they get "scammed" back to life for a second trigger at the total cost of 1 mana and a pitched card.
@@LibertyMonk Even without scamming it Grief is the most problematic of the evoke elementals from a play pattern perspective (in my opinion). It's the only one that has a proactive effect, plus it's the only one with an effect that's almost never seen at instant speed, and for good reason. You can still grief someone on their draw step to take whatever they just drew for example.
edit: grief doesn't have flash, I have contributed to the long legacy of MtG players not reading cards
@dismasthepenitent569 Grief doesn't have flash, though, so it can only be played at sorcery speed.
@@makutaman__113 oh you're right my bad lol
I guess I kinda just assumed it did because all the other ones do
Excited!
It's amusing to me how adamantly Wizards refuses to call this deck Rakdos Scam in their communications even though everyone knows exactly what it does. It's as if forcing rotations by designing power crept cards directly for an Eternal format was the real scam all along.
Aren't you excited for Modern Horizons 3 next year? Surely it will fix all the problems current Modern has and won't introduce new, even worse ones!
We should just call every new broken deck something passive aggressive like Temur Bankruptcy or Dimir Power Creep
"rAkDoS mIdRaNgE" I hear ya
@@RokaiMusicMH3 is going to be the worst set in a long time. Either it will be weaker than MH2 in which case nobody will buy it, or it will be as powerful or more powerful, and ruin the format even more. Shouldn't even exist tbh
Always a pleasure to see Andrea
That thumbnail was saddening, not gonna lie
IM EXCITED NO MATTER THE UPLOAD ❤
I’m not sure if you still pull decks from the comments, but if you do would you use this Vampire list the next time you play Pioneer?

I just realized this was Two Rounds in 9 minutes. Holy
A future free evoke spell could have shroud
Straight and to the point!
Great video, more like this please! :) I really enjoy seeing some "normal" games of Modern paper magic, not only fun formats. :P
You may want to update the This is a good example of how stupid a turn 1 4/4 Double strike is. Even without the scam, it is so much tempo. I won't miss it.
why mengu didn't play the scalding on turn two I don't get it :O are the cards on bottom right correct at min 2?
Love a good old fashioned featured match
never played modern so i never noticed the fact that fury had double strike :/ its a lot more broken than i thought
In game 2, Andrea’s life total is 20 at the start of his second turn, despite having a playing a fetch turn 1 and having a shock in play before turn 2. Did they forget to subtract his one life from fetching? Because he would be dead to fetching turn 4 unless I missed something
Yeah, they skipped him fetching with misty end step of Thoralf's turn 1 and fetching the tapped Steam Vents. After playing untapped Steam Vents turn two Andrea should be at 17.
Where is the music credits holy moly
Just in time for dinner, let's go
I'll never understand how people watched fury go 3 for 1 into functionally a 2 shot then concluded grief was the problem for making them keep a little less degenerate.
This makes me wonder how many other random games they've got recorded already
You guys should play Legacy! Maybe stuff like Stiflenaught. I've always thought legacy sounds really fun but there's not a lot of well produced legacy content..
8 damage turn 2 was absurd, thank god it got banned 🙏
Second game, Ragavan was dashed, which created a delayed trigger when it was dashed, so should it be returned at the end of you turn then? even if it died and returned from graveyard by undying thing?
The trigger can't find him, he's not the same Ragavan once he changes zones.
The undying Ragavan is a new game object, so the trigger doesn't see it :)
Thats a very odd programming like rules interpretation, when in paper its clearly the same card. I guess its easier then speilcifying this instance of ragavan, and forcing you to keep track of which of two ragavans you reanimate.
@@egoalter1276 Everything about magic since MTGO's release 2002 (or maybe even 6th Edition in '99) is a "programming like rules interpretation". The only rule that tracks the physical card is commander damage.
@@siosilvar I'm aware, of both its benefits, and why its done the way it is. But it ends up with some very strange interactions at times.
am i wrong on this or did andrea forget to take the one from misty rainforest in game 2?
also at first i was wondering if there was any reason thoralf couldn't have undying evil'd the fury in response to the unholy heat g2 but i rewatched it and realized i woulda prob just got my shit countered and maybe not win that game 2, so, gg thoralf
My favourite games of Magic are the ones where you can't hear the friction of the card sleeves every second. It's literally everywhere lmao. When you draw, when you're holding your cards (even when it's not your turn), when you put the cards down, when you peek at the top card of the library.
I both love it and hate it
I personally like it
When I bought my sleeves, I specifically researched which sleeves makes the best and loudest "plop" sound when put on the table. Nothing better.
well, in an old video of VS series by SCG there's 55 minutes of card flicking between Bran Nelson and Brad Anderson. It was a control mirror, the one that won with big Teferi.
The problem isn't really Fury itself, it's alternative costs that essentially make the card "free."
But they're so much fun to play.
why does noone replay to my support questions? i wait for like 2 weeks now...
Where can you get megui so fast
Love this no nonsense gameplay. Please don’t misunderstand though, I love all of the nonsense on this channel.
am I stupid? why didnt Thoralf play undying evil in response to unholy heat? like even if andrea has two unholy heats doesn't that force out two of them so casting he next creature is more likely to get through. Maybe its because he wanted to play sheldred and go for the win but that doesn't play around counterspell or a second unholy heat and then he needs to start topdecking. Also I may just be looking to far into it its not like this is a top 8 in a tourni or something. Also like it didn't matter in the end but just a thought
Andrea didn't play land turn 3 lol after iteration if it was true he had tarn in hand
"Sometimes just scamming out a fury is enough"
Yeah, Grief scam was the trap, fury scam wins games.
Turn 1 fury: Spend 3 cards and 1 black mana to deal 8 damage divided amongst creatures and planeswalkers as you choose.
THEN gain a 4/4 double strike creature with no downside.
Great turn 1 play where the opponent is guaranteed to have no creatures capable of stopping the double strike creature.
Also great play in later turns where the 8 direct damage can wipe several opponent creatures and planeswalkers.
...yeah, totally not busted.
Still think that grief was a much needed ban than fury
While the video is still new, it's "shows"*
If you change it quick nobody will notice 👀
Honestly, grief and voidwalker should also get the banhammer, those cards are insane
Dat powercreep....
I don't like the version of izzet made by mengu with shredders (i always go for turbo dragon especially against topdeck games like scam), but this shows how much unfair was fury in this game. You start to play the game when you're already dead 💀
Nice game, thanks
Great matches but I am missing the player insight and the player banter. I know that makes the videos 3x as long but this felt a bit rushed for me.
Never seen Mengu so cranky ahahahaha
5:12 really curious to why you would discard fury while keeping up all your instant speed interaction while being tapped out
but either way, always a pleasure watching cardmarket videos!
its really crazy how Bowmaster ate Ragavans lol
Ragavan shouldnt have come into play tapped after getting bolted while it had undying evil cast on it
so I'm not the only one noticing it
After Fury got ensconced in the meta I more or less quit Modern. Not sure if this is even close to enough, but we'll see, maybe I can make something work.
2:02 no land drop mengu???
Looking at his hand I don't think he actually had a scalding tarn in hand, I think the hand visual was incorrect.
Baubling yourself before playing a land was such a high-level play that I have never even seen it! Definitely keeping that one in mind the next time I play Timeless on Arena!
It’s one of the many reasons Mishra’s Bauble is better than Urza’s. It’s also useful if you’re playing Delver of Secrets, you can bauble yourself on *their* turn to check if your top card is an instant/sorcery. If it is, you can reveal before you draw, but if it isn’t, you can draw first and then reveal.
It sure does
i see mengu, i watch
Missing a showcase video for why Orcish Bowmaster needs a ban (at least in legacy) - I dont think the answer to the large potion of blue in a format isnt a reason to utterly destroy the core aspect (card draw) of it. Getting rid of Fury in modern shows that WotC isnt entirely sleeping on bans...
Bowmasters was meant to punish blue cantrips, but all it has done is given another cheap efficient threat for the Brainstorm Ponder decks. It's the most played creature, although unlike Dreadhorde Arcanist, it is a lot more fun to play against. I don't think DHA or EI should have been banned, I think something else should have gotten the hit, like DRC.
@@JohnFromAccountingBowmasters isn't a "threat" unless played into card draw. It's just a pair of 1/1s for 2 mana what serve as a lock piece at best.
Bowmasters is a powerful staple, but it's not the kind of card that gets banned in Legacy & Vintage. There's a reason why Collector Ouphe, Blood Moon, Chalice of the Void, Leyline of the Void, Wasteland etc aren't banned (except Chalice in Vintage because Moxen).
6:40 why not undying evil on fury ?
4 open mana, 2 counterspells in oppt. hand
Undying only brings a creature back if it doesn't have 1/1 counters on it already.
quality
5:13 why is mengu at 18? Assume he fetched off camera for a tap steam vents so he should be at 17 after shocking the second steam vent
Games like this make MtG look absolutely miserable 😂
Maybe it’s the decks I would play but grief was and is the problem.
However
This game didn't show why grief is not banned
The funny thing is.. Greif won the last game 😂
You really have to look at the entire game as a whole though. Fury putting Mengu to 1 is what really won that game.
He never should have played shredder on 2 with bolt in hand vs the undying / ragavan deck
I like modern but hate that it's basically modern horizons: the format
Fury stormed off in a fit of rage and won't be back soon sadly
Very clean nice game but yeah, get outta here Fury! And hopefully Grief will follow, soon (tm)
1 down, 4 to go.
it also shows what other cards should be banned as well^^
I watched 4 adds for this
I’m sorry, but I’m laughing my ass off at him hitting two more expressive iterations off the first one.
Grief could go as well
Did Andrea not take 1 damgage from the Misty Rainforest? That ends up being relevant with him going to one life later in the game.
:P
MODERN VEEDIO
Beans
Wizards knew the card was busted when they didn’t put it in Arena 😂
Grief also needs to be banned
The hope is without fury scam is bad enough that grief won’t be scammed and will “just” be a free thoughtsieze
@@huckthatdish the problem is that it's two free thoughtseizes with undying malice, plus also banning fury doesn't do much to help creature decks exist when orcish bowmasters still makes all non-ragavan X/1's unplayable. But wotc knows that, they just don't like to sledgehammer ban an entire deck at once. (Also it'd be a bad move to ban bowmasters while LTR special edition is still on shelves.)
Honestly, Grief is not as bad as fury. Fury warped the meta in a way where people could no longer play stuff like humans or other creature based strategies as effectively and was also a potential 3 turn clock on turn one. Grief is alot slower as a clock, so it is less problematic. I imagine it will only become a massive issue if an Orzhov version of scam sticks around because ephemerate essentially turns grief into 3 free thoughtseize
@@mint-swirl that’s true but I think the hope is when the undying malice only hits 4 grief and not 8 creatures it’s not worth running. If it still works in the meta without fury I totally agree it’s a problem
Ya just cause scam is still good doesn’t mean it needs “looked at” we shouldn’t be tryin to kill decks but keep them in check. Ya it won again….😢 but the ratio was not at 20+% lol and overall it hasn’t done as good so give it some time lol it sucks to be griefed but I don’t think it need to be killed completely out of the meta… I mean what’s next tron and dredge and mill just cause we don’t like to play against em lol….
Ps ima living end player not scam lol
They took our furyyy
Discard fury to shredder XD
You mean zero mana flame tongue was too good
