WHAT WENT WRONG? The Oliver 1800

  • A couple weeks ago I had the idea that I would get the 1800 out to give it a little field time. As you'll see, that didn't work out so well. After trying a few tricks, the pump had to come off to get repaired. I go over what went wrong, and put the pump back on with the hopes that it will run after a relatively cheap repair.
    Includes installation of a Stanadyne (Roosa-master) injection pump and the basics of taking it off and back on so you can take it to a professional shop for repairs.

    When I was in diesel class we would tear down those Rosa Master pumps scatter the parts then put them back together. Lots of small pieces.

    Thanks for the follow up on the 1800. That seal compression tool is helpful. There is another one that is a tapered tube that fits over the drive shaft and allows easy install of the shaft seals. Glad to see you have the special wrench that most of us old Oliver mechanics had for the back nut! The 1800 sounds great.

    I don't know what is worse to work with, a carb or a pump.Either one is magic, too much science being applied in the world of fluid dynamics. :)

    Not sure what happened, but I did put a comment in when I first watched this video and it's not there now. So anyways, I enjoyed all the good advice you gave here, lots of things to keep a look out for. Originally on my son's MF 285 we thought it could be possible that the fuel injector came out of time, but that wasn't the case. As you know it turned out being the head gasket and the #4 cylinder had a crack in it. We're waiting on the rings and we will be putting it back together. Thanks for sharing, I liked it and I hope you have a nice Friday and weekend ahead.

      Thanks! There's a ton of variations of that pump too. The 1855 used 4 different versions, and of course mine was the version that some of the parts are no longer available. They had to find a couple of good used parts for that one.

    Glad it was an easy fix. Congrats on 20k subs! We have a 1655 that ran fine a few years ago. Ran itself into the barn. Went to start it a year or two later and nothing. Pump is not getting the fuel to the injectors. Wonder if it's something simple like this.

    Many years ago, I was sub soiling with dads 1800. After about four hours, the engine got very quiet, then quit. I tried to restart it, but noticed air was being sucked into the exhaust. The dealer picked it up and found the camshaft broken in three places, and the timing gears also broke. Never did know why.

    We just had a locomotive burn down because of a doubled up o ring on a high pressure fuel pump. New guy, very young, very arrogant. Simple mistake many have done but a little humbling. Few hundred thousand for a replacement engine. Better than a million for another locomotive though.

    I know I've left the same comment 247 times already but every time you talk about or show your 1800 it makes me think man I really need to get the pump off of mine and get a clutch in it and get it nice again. Granted mine runs all right but it's got a little bit of a lope when it's idling and it doesn't have the power that it should and I think the pump is getting yucky inside

  • @Adam_Poirier
    @Adam_Poirier Před rokem +2

    That's interesting on your injection pump so I was wondering what happened to that tractor I knew you would have an update eventually. So the big question here: how much would you charge me if I throw my 1800 on the trailer and drop it off at Losey's home for wayward Oliver's to restore it? I'll pay cash 💵 lol

      Only about 35% of that comment was a joke, lol. The thought of having that tractor restored and having it restored by the legend himself is like a double win. So if you ever have a bunch of spare time someday... man that would something. By the time Abby graduates college, you'll be scratching your head and wondering why everything is so ridiculous in cost. I'm 33 and I have friends my age that are still in student loan debt… I'm thinking to myself how? Why?
