Just like how he opened 2020 with his impactful album, “Ada Irin”, Navy Blue closes this year with another heartfelt album titled “Song of Sage: Post Panic”, which very well may be his best put together piece of work yet.
This album is layered with Navy’s introspective thoughts. He analyzes and attempts to make sense of the chaos surrounding him as well as within him and while this also rings true for his prior albums, the writing on here specifically is one of the most remarkable I’ve seen in a long time. This album opens with the words “His name is Sage, Sage who sees through” and that already marks the sentiment of this project. We are further introduced and brought into the mind of Navy Blue as he describes exactly what and how he observes things such as the persecution and violence against Black people, continuing to grow into his own person, his relationships with his father and mother, overcoming internal conflict, finding his purpose and piece, the impact and reason for smoking, the erasure of other cultures by Europeans and so much more. Navy packs an incredible amount of deep and rich content into this album while doing extremely well to not stray off and mindlessly wonder about.
The fact that Navy was able to touch on so many topics in such a genuine way while keeping his writing unique and non-monotonous needs to be acknowledged and praised. The combination of how descriptive, heartfelt, wise, personal and empathetic he is with his words is in straight comparison with any established poet. I can’t stress enough how Navy’s music is able to completely draw out intense emotions just with the words that he speaks. A highlight example of using personal emotional trauma and vulnerability to connect with the listener is “Self Harm”. That song is easily the most I’ve directly connected with a song on a first listen and for someone who normally doesn’t get emotional, I damn near started tearing up. This art that Navy is putting out is so special and will be appreciated for years to come.
I also really enjoyed the references he was pulling out as well, name dropping the likes of Ronaldinho, Ziyech, Roberto Carlos, Thierry Henry and the Migos. Navy made sure to balance out his poetic side with a more traditional rapping aesthetic which I greatly appreciated.
The production on here is as beautiful as ever and definitely caught my attention as being of a bit more quality than some of his past works but in all honesty, a Navy Blue album is always going to have the most beautiful arrangement of sounds so this was nothing that I was surprised by.
To wrap it up, I thoroughly enjoyed and am mesmerized by this album. It’s by far my favorite project Navy Blue has done and I can only expect more greatness from him in the upcoming years. (Still waiting on the MIKE x Navy Blue album to be announced).
Thanks for reading and watching!
Favorite tracks: Self Harm (!!!), Tired, Aunt Gerry’s Fried Chicken, Pressure Points, Sea Bass, Enough
His best so far. Beautiful art. And that woods verse 🤯
Navy blue is a hidden gem
17:42 Fam, Nicholas Craven is definitely one of my favorite producers right now. The stuff he produced for people like Mach-Hommy, Roc Marciano, GxFR, Tha God Fahim, Ransom, Pink Siifu, Armand Hammer, and many others are simply the most beautiful pieces of music in recent years. So it wasn't surprising to notice that he'd give Navy Blue some beautiful shit for this album!
Word. Been feelin that lately too. His recent work with Ransom was also 🔥
@@ads260 Nothing but consistent heat from this duo. The "Director's Cut" trilogy, "Deleted Scenes" and "Crime Scenes"... all shots, no misses!
Nicholas craven easily one of my favourite producers too
yeah, that Aunt Gerry’s joint is really nuts, Pressure Points and Back To Basic too
@@ferragamofaro4351 Nice picks. I'd personally pick the instrumental for "Sea Bass" as my favorite, followed by "Back To Basics", "Pressure Points" and "Aunt Gerry's Fried Chicken". Crazy to think about how well placed Navy Blue was in all of Nick's joints!
SELF HARM IS NOT THE WAY TO GO
JUST A WAY TO COPE
Lately...
Good reaction. I haven't stopped playing the album, it's dense.

Another classic bro. Watching you get choked up listening to this resonates so much bc this project really different. As always your written reviews are impeccable. Can't wait to see your growth this trip around the sun.
navy was in his bag 2020
Love your channel man. Keep going!
Ayo dope reaction! Album is great, one of the best of the year for me.
16:02 according to Kweli's ig post in the summer. The album was shelved due to Madlib's management having "too many hands in". So as of rn there's no looks. Madlib produced the whole joint tho. Imagine the impact on Madlibs run just off Bandana last year, The Professionals album in Jan., & Pardon my French. Plus looseys ! That Black Star album would've shattered an already cracked earth
this was my same self harm reaction, couldn’t help but cry again watching your reaction to it
