It’s both interesting to lore, and hilarious when 2-D just simply does something else when the rap parts of the songs come on. In the lore, he apparently hates rap, but I thoroughly enjoy watching him just stand there awkwardly when he’s not doing anything.

I know this comment is old, but I feel like this is info that more fans should know. Apparently, Del was asking for more money to play live than Dan was willing to pay, so Del ended up splitting along with the rights to the lyrics. Therefore, to avoid getting sued, they had to change it for subsequent performances.

The reason it was like this was because Phil Life Cypher (The rappers in this video) were the original pick for the music video. They were replaced by del at the last second. Del copyrighted his lyrics in the music video and couldn't make it for the live performance. They decided to let Phil Life Cypher have their moment in the live concert. They just couldn't sing music video lyrics because of the copyright.
I just like to think it's because it would look wrong if a black guy ran into the stage and said "Finally someone let me out of my cage".
