A classic first seen on TV in Italy back in 2014, competitors look to cross a 12 meter pole covered in grease in the fastest time possible.
Antonino Papa is our new record holder with a time of 3.09 seconds.

This was cool and all, but don't tell me there can't be consistent neat layer of grease applied between attempts. This looked like a mess, and some people had a thick layer, while others had a very clear path for half the log. Completely defeating a lot of the runs.

The person who captured the flag. actually by the time he set his feet on the pole lot of grease was removed by others contests.
They are just unlucky.
I was going to say that isn't very fair. Half the pole was removed of grease by the other people. At least reapply grease like every 10 people or don't use as much through out the entire log.

I guess starting people don't know the strategy of walking on that pole, once they got the idea it became easier for the rest of the people
No you can see that "never give up" guy removed lot of grease by his hands ,but in the next attempt of other contestant there was grease , so there was reapplication.

Seems like 2 things are important: go fast so it's easier to not slip and use your arms flailing up and down to take off some of the weight of the foot that is about to be used to also decrease chance of slipping

From what I observe, the best way to cross a greased pole quickly is to run with your feet sideways as it gives you more area for your feet to stabilize

They didn't reapply for the qualifiers but they did for the finals and the actual record attempts

The greace was fully applied on the pole for the first guy......but the amount of grease got reduced after several people walking on it, wich made the last players easier to walk on the pole....
Yep. To make it fair for everyone, they should’ve reapplied the grease in between each contestant.. otherwise, idk how this is fair at all.

In the original game, only the first person to get the flag wins. So it is a trade off, go earlier and have a harder time, or go later and risk someone else getting it first.

That was just for qualifiers, they reapplied the grease for the record attempts.

I think side walk is the strategy to win this competition
Only way to keep balance is to have your feet sideways so you can cover as much of the top of the pole as possible. Having your feet straight will just make them grip the side and as a result you’ll slide down.

Unfair conditions for each player.. After each contestant tried,the grease quantity decreased and it made easy for next contestants to reach further more without trouble. So.. Running few distance is not challenging at the beginning of pole as the grease is not even on pole. I appreciate the first qualifier as he ran on atleast half greased pole... Rest are just ran on pole.. If u read this please think about it... I'm just sharing my idea positively 😁. Have a nice day.

For those who are saying that the attempt wasn't valid because the greese was progressively removed:
that is ultimately irrelevant.
That was just the qualification for the actual record attempt (starts at 4:00), during which they greased the pole thoroughly every time.

A lot of people saying the grease wore away as time went on. This is true but I do believe the grease does NOT need to be in a giant pile to be slippery as hell. At 01:11 we can see the grease is not nearly as thick as it was initially but there's still no way you wouldn't slip just as much, I think. The pole is still completely covered, it's just not piled up. I think maybe it's easier when the grease is piled up.... like the difference between walking on snow or ice. It's easier to walk on snow than ice.

I tried to set a WR record once. After several hours I managed to create a single apple peal about NINETEEN FEET long. only missed it by about 100 ft.

This is easy ...Sri Lanka we have a Grease Vertical Pole Climb...Tradional Sport here Especially Sinhala New Year Time. Going Verticle is Difficult than Horizontal...and those poor guys has no gears likd these athletes.
