    Herbert said: „I wrote the Dune series because I had this idea that charismatic leaders ought to come with a warning label on their forehead: "May be dangerous to your health." There are not THE good in dune. All are grey and potentially leaders, the people shall fear. Paul is no messiah, no white knight. He is an emperor in the rise.

      Indeed, one either serves the harmonizing intelligence which exists between people (beings) which prefer to live in the light (Truth/Life), or one merely functions to indulge their own senses/ego. There is no real way to compromise - eventually a scenario will come about for us all where we each need to make this choice.

      @@katonasanyi3735 The wokepocalypse; woke politics is infiltrating every single franchise. Destroying it like a cancer;
      Star Wars - Mary Sue protagonist that overshadowed the entire original cast, and made a mockery of the original trilogy and its themes all under the direction of radical feminist Kathleen Kennedy. "The Force is Female" and it also went woke, and got broke.
      Star Trek Discovery - portays Klingons as "Trumpster Isolationists" according to Aaron Harberts, as well as having a Mary Sue protagonist which figuratively castrates longtime fan favorite character, Spock.
      Dr. Who - The 13th doctor played by Jodie Whittaker is a feminist on a power trip, who in the trailer for the 13th doctor, Literally and symbolically shatters a non existent glass ceiling and sarcastically and smugly says "Oops." The writers of doctor who go on to reveal the answer to the long awaited mystery: the Doctor's origin. Turns our the Dr was a black girl all along... I wish I was kidding. Utter tripe.
      Marvel Phase 4 and 5 -
      Thor replaced by a Lesbian Valkyrie and his ex girlfriend... A Muslim Ms. Marvel (OH she'd just LOVE Biden considering his courtesy with the Taliban)... Captain Marvel 2... Brie Larson Boogaloo... all woke garbage and liberal piss takes
      Amazon's Lord of the Rings - I miss Christopher Tolkien already, because his sister selling the rights to Amazon was an absolute disgrace. LGBT corruption of a classic piece of literature written by a devout Catholic? Oh yeah, let's ruin that...
      And don't even get me started on Netflix and the shows they've ruined just in the past 3 years... too many to count. Not least of which the Dark Crystal prequel debacle who they canceled the second season for because the Henson family didn't want to disgrace Jim Henson's legacy by pushing LGBT+ nonsense into the story.

    SPOILER ALERT...
    I think a trilogy that encompasses Dune: Messiah would be a perfect combination and because it's a movie format, some mixing up might feel more natural.
    The issue with filming just Dune has for me always been that the book, almost misleadingly, finishes on a high note, with Paul seemingly assuming total control. One has to read between the lines a bit to realize that this control is an illusion. An this is why Dune: Messiah is an important part, where the terrible consequences of Paul's victory are more explicitly shown and, as you mentioned, the overall tone is much darker. I would definitely love to see that on the big screen as well.

    • @secretsofdune
      @secretsofdune  Před 2 lety +13

      The point you make about the misleading high note is why I don't think part two ends with the great battle. I think if they kept part 3 as a movie that shows paul fighting from start to end in war and battle would make for an insanely epic Dune film. They either start or end Dune part 2 with Feyd's 100th kill, depending on whether they choose to show the scene out of timeline in a cinematic way (both ways work for me and would be great). Imagine ending Dune part 2 with Feyd's gladiatorial scene, that would be epic. But due to the tie-in factor of lieutenant Lanville, I'm pretty sure it will be at the start unless they change the plan. Then part three has the battle with the Emperor, the growth of the Empire, Alia and Duncan, the birth of the "Children of Dune" and the end of Paul's character arc. It would be incredible.

      I agree with this a lot too. Maybe Villeneuve will want to adapt Children of Dune a decade later and Dune saga will become a lifelong project for him, just like Ridley Scott did with Alien series, but I think it is better to end with Dune Messiah for now and conclude the message about Paul’s story. Paul walking towards the desert one more time at the end will be such a painful and great scene to watch. If Villeneuve decides to adapt Children later, Chalamet and other actors from first trilogy will be old enough to reenact their roles too. I can imagine the audience gasping 20 years from now on when they see our Paul back in the desert, still living, but complete opposite of the young, shining boy we once knew. But they will have to change a lot to adapt the Children. I just cannot imagine them actually hiring children for those roles. They’ll probably age up the characters.

He’s more like a reluctant villain and the ending is the sealing of doom not just for millions of innocent people but also for the Fremen who in just a dozen years will not be the same wise, faithful and disciplined desert people but will be dragged into villainy even while they pull Paul into villainy. I would at least be content to see Denis do exactly this and make through Messiah in three films; assuming this first film is beautiful and amazing and is respectful to the Book (which I think it’s likely too be, I merely remain cautious in my optimism). There are few things I’m not thrilled about but these remain relatively minor and in the realm of the theoretical; until becoming practical, October 22nd, when we see the full vision enacted.
    But, I think there’s a certain pleasure in fantasizing about getting the Villeneuve treatment for (at least Books one and two of) the Dune saga, and then, a decade or so later another trilogy of films in the series; and so on until Chapterhouse; or if you must do Hunters and Sandworms, too.
    I imagine Denis doing them All would be epic and I’d love it. But, maybe it’s more likely, that another director would do each trilogy? Or, with how it goes today, they go through two or three directors and have “creative differences” (‘Kathleen problems’ is what I vote we call them) before finding one who’s similar enough to corporate or willing to tow their line at the expense of their own creative vision. . .
    Anyway, maybe we could get at least 7 films if this happens, and maybe even 9 through Chapterhouse or 12-13 through Sandworms.
    I know this is long winded but I love this stuff. Imagine 3 or 4 trilogies of films, each directed approximately a decade to fifteen years apart by another director (hopefully one), bringing the Dune saga from that precarious beginning through the Books' end.
    I commented on one of Nerd Cookies’ great recent videos on a certain aspect of current disney Star Wars, I really think this Potential exists. And Dune and Frank Herbert could become The shared cultural and theatrical experience of multiple generations like Star Wars, was, but way deeper, reflective of the relevance and messages and metaphors and social commentary/warning that Frank wrote. George made a tremendous story; but Frank's work is clearly levels ahead. To be fair, this is partly due to George targeting kids.

    My only concern is that Villeneuve loses his enthusiasm. He seems to enjoy skipping around genres and styles, and I wonder if he might get a bit bored and hand directing duties to someone else for future instalments. I get the feeling that he's a bit of a restless creative type, who will only work on a project that he is really into at that moment. I know he loves the Dune story, but I'm not sure that his restlessness won't push him onto new things sooner than even he might expect.

He wanted to make more Blade Runner things as far as I know, but even after he finished Dune or was in the process of finishing it, he mentioned how he was tired of having to imagine different designs and looks for each and every thing (this means sci-fi) like a book or a car. He expressed the feeling that he wanted to go back to making simpler films. So we will see what happens!

    I'd say that a Paul Atreides trilogy is pretty likely, though beyond that I think that, even though I would really, really love to see the rest of the books adapted, they just get too complex and convoluted to condense into films. However, seeing as they're so interested in developing the Dune: The Sisterhood miniseries, I don't see it as impossible that they could adapt the remaining four books as a 5 or 6 season TV series (I think 4 would be a little too short cause the last two books are so intricate, and essentially shift around a lot of crucial aspects of the Dune Universe in a way that might be puzzling if it was squashed into one season per book).

    1) it goes really bad: we get nothing more. no movie, no series, nothing.
    2) it goes just good: we get the second movie and it will end with paul as emperor. ( and after the second, may be we get the series)
    3) it goes really good: we get the second and third movies and the series in parallel. (and the second movie will end with paul waking up from the spice trance. )

It would be far more fitting ending that Lynch's magical rain ending. It would also be a great segue into Dune Messiah if Denis decides to make that next, and I hope he does. Personally I hope they all do so well that Denis decides to make Children and God Emperor as well, THAT would be beyond exciting.
    That being said, I wish people would stop saying the studio is 100% behind Denis. If they were then they'd have let him film both together. I'm sure they're about 75% behind him, though.

By that I mean looking back on recent television dramas and maybe spot some contenders.. it might have an impact on casting!?

    Part 2 has to end with the victory over the Emperor unless it happens at the end of a third part. You can't slip that into the beginning or middle of a movie. Herbert set it up to be a grand spectacle of a finale. The Harkonen are destroyed, the Emperor and his Sardaukar are defeated, the Bene Gesserit and specifically Mohiam are denied their ultimate goal after all their manipulations, the Guild brought to heel and Paul all but coronated with the betrothal of Irulan all in the space of one bad storm. @@secretsofdune There seem to be two cuts with different ending points we're hearing about. I think the further in it ends the better because leaving too much for part 2 could be a problem. There is no great ending point elsewhere in the story, I think Paul taking the Water of Life might be a good one. Starting part 2 with Paul in his coma would fit the misguided perception of some that it is Chani's movie. Conversely the final battle is very clearly a strong end point... and it's the actual end of the first book. Remember the books jump YEARS and are well into the Jihad by the time Messiah starts. That time gap could be filled but it's otherwise a huge hole that is best managed by aligning it between films.
