I installed the vse on my 22l5p definitely a worthy upgrade the cat 1r 0750 fits just watch the seal some are defective and don’t seal
Great video! I would rather be safe than sorry, so I will be upgrade shortly.
Thanks !
The vse fuel filter kit is on sale right now for Black Friday
The problem I see is that the primary water separator on the VSE has the conductivity sensor on the clean interior side of the filter and by the time you get an alarm the filter exterior will likely be close to full of water. Typical commercial equipment that uses these filters that are water separator has a separate water sensor.
I’d say the whole point is to not need these, until you do, which is unpredictable. I’d hate to wish I would have had them after it is too late!
Absolutely!
Does the fuel from the tank go into the interior side of the water filter or go to the exterior side on this setup? The spin on filters are usually designed so the dirty side is the exterior side and the water sensor is on the inside. Just wondering how the water sensor is picking up the water level inside the filter if the water happens to be on the exterior. I see FASS systems has retained the original Chev design filter on their version of this so that the water sensor still functions.
Any concern with regards to the additional length of the Cat filters where they may be more susceptible to being hit by road debris. Appears the factory filter is tucked up in the frame a bit more than the aftermarket filters.
Factory filter is tucked up more and has a shield around it. I know a few people are running the Cat filters so it would just depend on your use. If off-roading, I would be very concerned.
I replaced my stock filter with another OEM filter at 10,000 miles. The used filter looked perfectly fine and no water. The only way to see 10 micron particles would be to place the paper element under a microscope. I’ll stick with the OEM filter system at least until the warranty expires.
I agree with you on the 10 microns and seeing them, I was leaning more towards seeing the dirt and crap found at the bottom of the filter housing. Either way, I feel confident both setups provide the minimum filtration our fuel systems need.
No need to wait until after warranty expires. Go read the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.
@@PastarocketS-sb7nk what people forget about when the "magnusson-Moss act" is thrown around that one would need to back up themselves with a lawyer. In addition, the MM act doesn't mean one can modify the way a factory system works, fyi.
@@PastarocketS-sb7nk I worked with GM engineers for a numbers of years and I trust that the filter design for the LM0 fuel system works perfectly fine. However, the VSE design switched filter manufacturers after they discovered what they called a filter design problem. VSE also modified the filter housing design. So, for me, I stick with OEM components at least until the warranty is over. But to each his own, your money your choice.
Does this set up negate your warranty?
Thanks for the review. I have this on my 2021 LM2 Duramax. What is the part number for the Cat water separator filter?
the one shown is a 175-2949 but it is the wrong one for this application. I got that part number from a friend that is running these cat filters on a 6.6. This would hang down below the frame rail, it would also put the water in fuel sensor way out of reach to read but I think all filters put it out of reach now that I have seen the filters opened up. amzn.to/3QP2AbG
I had a CAT 1R-749 gets severely clogged at 16000km after one stop at rural diesel station. I was suspecious of the fuel so i just filled 20 liter only thinking it wont harm much and boy i was wrong!!! Car started to stutter hard. At least it saved my injectors and the injection pump. I cutted it open and you can see it in my channel it was clogged entirely. Come to think of it it was upgrade well spent!
It did it's job! I love this story !
And this is why I will be installing an extended tank as well as a tank in the bed. 2019 Colorado Duramax is my first diesel and it took one fill up of bad diesel to learn my lesson 😂
@@codyblackstock9892 nice call! I would've add the additional filter setup as a safety net.
It would be interesting to see what color the media started out as. If the darkening of the factory filter corresponds to how much garbage it traps, it would make sense that these filters spread that out over a larger surface area and don't look as dirty.
My big question about this setup is still the placement of the water in fuel sensor. The water would collect on the dirty side of the separator unit, but the sensor is on the clean side and has no way of sensing what's going on with the dirty side. If the separator fills with water to the point that water is passing through the media and reaching the sensor, then it's already headed upstream (I don't think that the secondary filter is able to separate water).
That being said, I've had my LM2 for two years and 35,000 miles and have never had a water in fuel issue (knock on wood), so either A) water in fuel isn't as prevalent as it used to be, or B) the factory sensor gums up with debris and doesn't detect small amounts of water in the first place. Either way, the finer filtration seems like a bigger issue and more than enough of a reason to run this setup.
I agree with your opinion on the positioning of the water sensor, actually I agree with all of what you said.
I agree I just purchased this VSE dual filter system. I would have to believe if you have crap in your tank like I see what happens to fuel tanks in smaller trucks example NPRs also if you purchase a none top tier diesel fuel.
Then this system is worth it. I am still going to install it on my 3.0l Duramax
@EB-vs3oo I've had mine on the truck for a few months now and I love it. I drain the separator periodically and have never found any water contamination. I try to only fill up at well maintained truck stops for added peace of mind.
What are part numbers for the correct CAT filter and water separator?
Get with VSE for the filters they suggest to use with the kit. i don't want to recommend incorrect filters.
I see that you left information on the CAT filter but not the CAT water separator. Do you have that information? 🤔
It doesn't fit.
@@DemonWorks 🤬
I’d say no news is good news. Your probably purchasing diesel from a reputable retailer who keeps up on their filters as well. Just watched a video from I Do Cars where they tore down a 2020 LM2 due to what appears oil starvation to #6 rod bearing or possibly a turbo bearing seal/failure. Curious if you’ve seen that and your thoughts.
I did see that video, I didn't fully watch it because it just wasn't enjoyable to me, I tear down engines all of the time and that was just tough. As for the lack of lubrication issue, it's rare for something major like that to happen and could have many different reasons, we will probably never know fully on that one.
was the first factory filter the one you cut open and how many miles
The first one that was cut up that I showed, was a factory filter. It was new, if you have not seen the videos on that, I suggest you check it out. The Donaldson filters I opened up are aftermarket ones from the VSE housing. czcams.com/video/nhI5HoSFPsc/video.html
What’s the part number on the CAT water separator. I didn’t think the Caterpillar water seperators worked with this system
175-2949 does not fit
@@DemonWorks So you’re just going to send it anyway? I like it.
@@DemonWorks all the problems and bitching I read on the FB groups. I have to say, I don’t think I have ever read were someone even got any indication of water in the fuel system. I use the Baldwin and CAT combo. Will have to keep us updated on how that separator works for you. I’m thinking of making the switch next go around
Do the threads on the 175-2949 match the threads on the VSE unit? What I've seen says that Cat separator has 1-14 threads and the Baldwin BF1280 has 13/16-18
good catch, I haven't installed it yet, will definitely need to check this asap.@@cje26
Looks like over kill for your application , now if you had primarily got your fuel from an old farmers tank , i can see the justification .
theres find dirt in it its discolored
Looks like a waste of money…3.0 Duramax has been tested up to 2.5 million miles with OEM parts.
Use a microscope. Your looking for VERY small particles.
Not able to video with a microscope, I worked with what I could film and what I could share with others.
