  • I wanted a non-permanent and non-labor intensive way of having a milk crate attached to the back of my bike. I had some gear ties lying around so I used those and they work great! It's really easy and inexpensive too.

    Thanks! It worked!!! I had my doubts and experimented with some releasable zip ties before the product arrived. I couldn't get long enough zip ties so I put a few together. I figured I could get more torque on the zip ties and they did work if someone is looking for an alternative. But when the Gear Ties arrived just now from Amazon I gave them a shot. They work just as well as the zip ties and are about as easy to install. I put them as far towards the front and back of the crate as I could and I can lift the back of the bike up holding the crate. The crate feels very secure with little if any movement. You might have to experiment and play around to find the best placement on your bike but they definitely work. Fantastic!!!

    The reason why I would like to get a bike basket is because, we moved into a new house and I’m getting a hand-me-down bike.
    My mom said I can bike around our small city with it, and I’m expecting to be the one to get some grocery’s along with my sister.
    So just a good old basket will help!

    I've used these in the past to attach milk crate. Works well, but I found it loosens up after a few days or so- depends on how much you carry in the crate and how bumpy your ride is. I ended up going with zip ties because i didn't like retightening the gear ties.

    Those things are so practical, you can also use reusable zip ties. But it might be easier to undo the gear ties as all you have to so is twist. Sometimes it can be tricky to to reopen a zip tie

    I've been using Nite Ize rubber ties to my plastic milk crate on my Topeak Explorer bike rack since 2010. I went with the plastic milk crate because it is a much cheaper, larger and stronger than the Topeak sliding basket. The Topeak TrolleyTote is a good nice option but I don't want to take it off and go shopping with it. The $79.95 Topeak TrolleyTote is expensive and someone could steal it easily if I leave it on my bike while I shop. I can leave a milk crate attached to my bike and don't have to worry about someone stealing a cheap plastic milk crate.

    • @SurprisinglyDeep
      @SurprisinglyDeep Před 4 lety

      Just a heads up, theres still a notable constant low level risk of leaving milk crates unattended.
      Some thieves steal milk crates to recycle the plastic for a deposit.
      Here is an article describing the problem:

So far I've been able to carry a bottle of St Remy Brandy, Bailey's, 2 1L cartons of egg nog, a heavy D lock and 2kg of frozen fruit. Now all I need is to find a black milk crate. It is illegal to own that crate, as it belongs to a dairy and in most states they can charge you for having it. Make sure if you are running around town with a milk crate, that it does not have warnings and dairy markings on it. Some states are VERY STRICT. Expect a $100 plus fine. They sell unmarked ones at Home Depot and other stores.

      I tied them more like a twist tie. Unlike bungee cords these do not stretch. Hope this helps.

    • @danielscissorhands
      @danielscissorhands Před 6 lety

      Ok, I looked. Did you continue carrying heavy things in it, and did it hold, or did they ties eventually broke? Btw, my bike rack curves up at the back, and because the milk crate wont fit under my seat (seat is not quite high enough), the back of the milk crate has to sit on the part of the rack that curves up a bit at the back, so it is not quite flat on the bottom. Anyway... I bought what you bought, and the 18 inch ones don't really seem to be long enough. I just put it on. I don't know if it will stay. To be safe, I left more room at the ends instead of wrapping it around so much of the bike rack, so u could wrap each end of each tie around the other end of each tie, like a twist tie.
