Fun fact: Chex Quest resulted in a nearly 300% sales increase. Panned by video game critics, it still went on to win a bunch of advertising awards. Chex Warrior, we salute thee.
Doesn't it still have an active community of fans?

I loved that game. Went to the trouble of downloading its two sequels via analog dialup, too.
@@mitchellbonds766 So did I always have a huge grin on my face for the whole concept every time I play.
If we're going to be even meaner, we could say that Oxtra is just a reskinning of Oxbox, but with less and more height at the same time
And more cheesy puns
Less space lasers, more papercraft.
This is scarily on point
I feel like we could say it *started* as a reskin, but then like so many games unexpectedly do, it grew entirely into its own thing.
I think the height averages out.
Jane's elaborate breakdowns on games with mininal to no plot is one of my favorite things. I'll never forgot the body horror that is Pac-man. Now we have "our Citizen Kane". Put that on a shirt xD

My favorite line was "us beanheads". As if to suggest there was an active community around Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, and that Jane was a member. Kudos to whoever wrote that. Though, after Jane mentioned lunchsleeps I dunno how you resisted having her be asleep at the end of her segment.
Bruh the ammount of hours me and my friends put into that game, there was definitely a community... of like 4 world wide counting Jane in total apparently

That's just Nuketown. Turns out it's hard to change how guns work when your game has a historical setting, and Infinite Warfare bombed so hard the next CoD was WW II.
So next time the franchise goes to space, buy it.

#4: The original version of Super Mario Bros 2 was way too dificult for many players in the west , so that's why we got the altered version of Super Mario Bros 2. The original was only released in Japan, untill it was rebranded as the lost levels in Super Mario All Stars.
That's not the only reason. Japan SMB2 followed up its original within less than a year on the Famicom Disk System. Nintendo had originally intended to release the disk system in the west as well but dithered and by the point they finally decided firmly against it years had passed and the standards on NES games had gone way up as cartridge add-on chips to give the NES hardware new capabilities became commonplace. In the face of this Japan SMB2 with its 99% recycled graphics and sound and high difficulty coming in years late as the followup to Nintendo of America's foundational game seemed likely to damage the brand.
And heck, it probably would have. Maybe it'd be a different story if it'd come along in the same time frame as it did in Japan but by this point people expected more out of a sequel and certainly more out of a would-be Super Mario Brothers 2.
Also, Luigi could jump higher than Mario in the original smb2, so the statement about Luigi's jump ability becoming canon is incorrect.
That's not the reason at all. Nintento was told Americans might not like SMB2 because it was TOO similar to the original. It didn't feel like a different game at all.
@@BearManley And that's probably true, it's a pretty boring sequel. Feels like an uninspired romhack.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa??
Yippee-ki-yay, motherdude! See if you can collect the letters S - K - A - T - E!
Not exactly, They'd just finished making Apocalypse starring Bruce Willis for PS1, and were asked to make a skateboarding game, so they just used a bunch of assets from Apocalypse to throw something together as a test/techdemo, before fleshing it out.(And getting Tony Hawk to sign up)

Popular character The Tent From Blair Witch. My favourite! When are we going to get a spin off movie or full-length game about Tent's adventures?
That would propapbly be a very slow movie/game, since tents don't usually move around much. The Tent does have some silent charisma in it though, i'll give it that.

Yeah, and dude still needs a haircut.
yassssssss, chex quest; my entire family loved that game, particularly my father, who was never much for video games. I still remember it fondly every time I eat chex XD
Don't let ANYBODY try to tell you that bad games can't leave good memories.
I too have found memories of watching my father play this game. I legit thought I had made up the memory until I mentioned it to my sisters a few years ago and they remembered it too.
My cousin had this game - I loved playing it when I was at their house. It actually got pretty difficult and the goo monsters could be pretty scary.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Super 3d Noah's Ark was such a direct copy from Wolfenstein that everything (enemies, ammo, secrets etc) were in the same places, so if you knew Wolfenstein well enough you'd be able to do the exact same in S3DNA
I'd be surprised if there was any crossover at all with those games' playerbases.

Had some really fun weapons, lots of hidden rooms, and kept me playing for so many hours. If I could go back in time, I would never take this away from my kid self.

“Mama Luigi” is canon, via the meta that Mama was rescinded from the Doki Doki Panic game into Luigi from Super Mario Bros.!
Fun fact about the Noah's Ark backstory, from Genesis 7:2-3:
"Take with you seven pairs of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and one pair of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate, and also seven pairs of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth."
While there were indeed a breeding pair for every land animal and bird, there were even more of what was considered *livestock*. This would include cows, sheep, and goats.
Although, you are correct that the number you have to send to sleepytime junction is a ridiculous amount.
...That, or they bred REALLY fast. lol
I was going to post this exactly. Glad I'm not the only one.
I was also gonna point that out
I also was going to post this. Blew my wife's mind when I pointed this out to her the other day.
I love how jane could barely say that dr robotniks' mean bean machine was the citizen Kane of gaming without laughing
The old NES game Yo! Noid was Kamen no Ninja Hanamaru in Japan. Also, Circus Caper for the NES was called Moeru! Oniisan with completely different graphics, as well.
I was wondering if anybody would mention the Noid. I loved that game, but the pizza contests drove me nuts!

No. They're on the same engine and have some superficial similarities, but they aren't the same game. SWGB is much more conservatively balanced with early game econ bonuses being either very small or counterbalanced by penalties. Also, it has player controlled flying units, which AoE2 does not.
Calling SWGB an AoE2 clone is as accurate as calling Jedi Knight 2 and 3 clones of whichever Quake iteration their engine is licensed from. Some units behave similarly as some firearms in FPSs behave similarly, but the overall dynamic is different and there are additional mechanics not used in the base game.
@@nathanbrown8680 true, it was harsh to call it a clone
I just re-downloaded it from one or another of the PC game sites. Maybe epic?
"It's Nerf or nothing" taken to its next logical conclusion.

@@kabob0077 I didn't know this. NONE OF THE DOOM MOD CHANNELS I WATCHED COVERED THIS! HERESY!
Ages ago, I bought that Blair Witch: Rustin Parr game specifically because it was a semi-sequel to Nocturne. Also, surprised anyone else remembers Nocturne!
We all do :P
As a kid who WAS allowed to play Unreal Tournament, that Nerf arena game was surprisingly still pretty darn good! It had a disk-launcher with projectiles you could steer around like the redeemer and get headshots with, and one of the more satisfying rocket launchers I'd used at the time.
Ah man, the Tent was my favorite character in that movie!
Ninjabread Man was originally going to be Zool 3. The creator of Zuul tried to make a sequel but when he saw what the company he trusted it to were doing to it, he pulled out so they made it their own game instead. Then copied the exact same game 4 more times just reskinned as Trixie in Toyland, Anubis II, Billy the Wizard, and Rock n' Roll Adventures.

6:08 Wow, I did not remember that I had ever played this game until that music started. Very distinctive!
Nerf Arena Blast was my childhood. Incredible game and so happy to see it in a list video
It was a pretty decent use of the UT engine honestly, a lot of fun to play I don't know which I played more UT (usually with the headshot only mutator against bots) or NAB.
Another (and actually good) game built off Doom was Strife, a rather impressive RPG for what it did with the engine.

Yeah, Toad's clearly the best choice, especially for desert levels.
@@StraightOuttaJarhois then ts luigi for that jump i find princess and mario are the worst of the 4
What about Atlas? It was basically a reskin of A.R.K. Survival Evolved.
Wasn't that made by the same studio though?
Untitled Goose Game was originally developed as Half Life 2: Episode 3.
Try dishonoured ;)
The tent was my favorite character
Assassin’s Creed games are secretly slight variations off the first
As soon as I saw Doom in the spoilers, I knew Chex Quest was coming up.
Aw, I really liked Nerf Arena Blast and tried to get friends into it. The game mode involving the Ballzooka was almost a LAN party favorite. Two teams try to collect 7 balls in order and use the Ballzooka to shoot those balls into their teams “tree.”
It also had the element of “If only Nerf guns really worked this way...”
May have inspired a few paint ballers and air soft enthusiasts along the way.
One additional fun fact you didn't mention about Super Mario Bros. 2, is that there actually is a real, Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 that came out at about the same time as the US version. However, it was deemed too difficult for the US market, hence the weird reskinned version of Doki Doki Panic.
"You've really gotta jam it in and work it around."
...That's what she said.
Also, "You've really gotta jam it in there and work it around" title of your sex tape
You'd know.

Seeing Nocturne makes me want a remaster of it even more. I still have the original discs somewhere. Really loved that game despite its flaws.
i finished Super Mario 2 and it said at the end it was all a dream... ok i didn't finish it but it does say that at the end, which is how they decide that it was so different
I'm confident the Witcher 3 was actually just a side quest from Gwent, the true purpose of the game!

So basically these are all the “we have x at home” memes
Nerf Arena Blast WAS Unreal. It was made in Unreal engine, and came with a level editor. There were actually sites to download maps for it!
Also, it was actually pretty cool!
Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean machine was one of my favorite sega games ever. Especially the Music in the Stage 13 Cutscene where he jumps out of the hovercraft to yell at scratch and grounder. I loved the music from that part.
I loved Chex Quest. That game was so silly and so much fun.
Fallout New Vegas was just Fallout 3 wearing someone else's skin

Something, something 'Cereal killer'. Something, something 'totally Nerfed'.
I remember those old Blair Witch games. The first one did have the cast from the movie. They make a cameo in what seems to be a time wormhole, that throws the character through various stages of the forest being industrialized and structures from the movie in different states of destitution. Lots of lore but bad mechanics.

I remember getting Chex Quest back in the day but my parents PC wasn't powerful enough to run it. Ahh the good ole days
On number three you forgot to mention Kirby's Avalanche. Crazy how all three look exactly the same. Once you got good at this game it was really addictive in vs mode.
"That's the 6th time this has happened, Toad. If she's not in next one, your going in that Lava" Sadly more relatible then I want to admit.
Also, I would actually pay to actually see how in anyway do you make a gritty version of anything based on Barbie.

Ahh the 90s!!😁
Oh man, the memories. I loved Nerf Arena Blast. Played it a ton when I was younger.
Holy nostalgia, Batman! I remember the serious buzz around the release of Nocturne being the realistic clothes physics. Luckily, I had a beefy enough system to run it at ultra detail and got huge laughs from the game watching my trench-coat go all willy-nilly during an intense action sequence. xD
What about the entire Metal Gear series? That entire series disguised a massive fever dream movie into a stealthy, gravelly voiced gaming experience.
Love ya Kojima!!

Mean Bean Machine is way more fun than it has any right to be.
Puyopuyo is crazy addictive. I've always preferred it to Tetris and it's so satisfying to put together a chain reaction and drop two rows of grey beans on your opponent.
I still have a copy of the Chex Quest first level MIDI in my MIDI folder in my music collection. It was a good song. Glad to hear it again!
Well, to be honest, if you look at the major changes between Mario's debut in Donkey Kong and his standalone game, Mario Bros., then the even bigger change in format between Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros., SMB2 didn't feel too outlandish, it felt like a sequel that shook up the formula, like many during that era.
“Put a shirt on Toad, you look ridiculous”

Best moment of my day so far!!!!.....after my coffee of course.
I loved playing Mean Bean Machine at my cousins house when I was 5 or 6. If only he’d also had Citizen Kane on VHS. I clearly would have enjoyed it seeing as I was already so cultured.
Hey. Blair Witch Volume 1 was cool! I personally liked that it was an additional episode of Nocturne with some extra game mechanics. It's a pity though that they had to cut the epilogue for some reason - the one where she leaves the city and shares a few extra words with the Stranger. You can only read it in the script (Google it).
