  • The videogame bosses that really stick in the mind are the ones who are so weird that we still can’t explain what the developers were thinking when they decided to have you fight them. Here are 7 of the weirdest boss fights we’ve ever had to go through. Enjoy, and subscribe for a video like this every week, why not: www.tinyurl.com/SubToOxbox
    Among the weirdos in the video above are a giant slot machine in space, a man dressed as a thanksgiving turkey, and the President of Square Enix. What did we miss? Leave it in the comments.

    Something all bosses need to explain: why they all lurk in large arenas with lots of cover right near stashes of health items and weapons. This seems like poor decision making.

      Sometimes it makes sense. It's usually deep into a dungeon or bunker that is really hard to get to, and one has to imagine that the health and ammo stashes are for the henchmen that guard the boss arena.

    Fun fact: "Psychopathy" is not a diagnosable psychological disorder - intentionally so. A decision was made to not include diagnostic criteria for psychopaths, because to do so would effectively allow psychologists to diagnose people as "officially evil" - something that would basically ruin a person's life. So calling someone a psychopath is just an insult, not an attack on their mental health.
    "Mania," however, is a recognized and diagnosable mental illness, or at least a component of one. Bipolar depression, aka manic depression or bipolar disorder, is characterized by states of extreme highs and lows. The highs are called mania - and a person suffering from them could be referred to as a "maniac," though not in a professional setting.
    So by changing the names of the bosses from "psychopaths" to "maniacs," Capcom went from insulting people who don't technically have a mental illness to insulting people who actually do. Well played.

      Its an obsolete term, maniac used to be used to refere to people with mania but that is no longer the case actually. Thou it can still be seen as offesive, that means the word is, or atleast should be, no longer realated to to those disorders. When you look it up the mayority of the definitions say its used to refer to someone who acts in a wild or dangerous way, or some one with obsessive enthisiasm towards something.

    For some reason, the final boss of The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age always seemed weird to me.
    Because it's the eye of Sauron.
    There's no explanation _how_ or _why_ (except to distract Sauron while Frodo those his thing, I guess) you're suddenly on top of the tower of Barad-dûr, it just kinda happens.
    And after you beat the eye, they play the scene from the movie where the tower falls down. And I guess the heroes die?

    • @brianlewolfhunt
      @brianlewolfhunt Před 5 lety +6

    • @MisterJackTheAttack
      @MisterJackTheAttack Před 5 lety +8

      @luciferheller8725 Před 5 lety +9

      That's a different type of WTF boss. The type of "what is this monstrosity" that can still be explained in the universe of the media in question (in this case, Mass Effect, but I don't know shit about said universe so I don't know much about the Human Reaper (which I'm assuming is what you're talking about and no, just because I know what it's called, doesn't mean I can explain it to you)).
      THESE bosses, on the other hand, are the type of WTF bosses that have NO REASON to be there. Say, fighting the CEO of the company that made the game in question.
      Granted, games like God Hand and South Park have a bunch of bosses that fit into the WTF category, so in those cases, you just have weirdest in a sea of weird bosses.

      It's less the 90s Power Rangers in and of itself and more the origin of the franchise. To give more detail, Power Rangers is just an Western adaptation of the Japanese Super Sentai phenomenon. They basically dub over any scenes where the team isn't morphed as well as the stuff involving the monsters while the English actors (or whatever language you have it translated to) only really play a part for the story/"normal life" segments.
      It's actually a huge thing in Japan that's been going on since the 70s and as a result, you'll often find references of some kind to it in just about any form of Japanese media that doesn't need to take itself too seriously be it anime, manga, video games, or so on. Sometimes it'll be subtle and other times, like here.... not so much.

    I remembered god being the final boss in the Simpsons Game, but none of the DDR stuff. I couldn't work out why I didn't recognise that bit (seems pretty memorable). Then I realised it's because I got about 1/3 of the way into that game, got fed up and just put in a very handy cheat code that unlocked all the game's cutscenes and watched that instead.
