      Yeah, grouse is by far the tastiest bird in North America! Pan fried or in jambalaya, it's by far the best tasting bird, wild or farmed! 😋✌️😎

    Great stuff as usual! I was up from PA the second weekend in Oct. and the trees were still fully leaved and near peak color. It made for limited shooting opportunities but we still found birds. Hunted on foot with my Labrador, walking the most overgrown roads we could find. Crops were full of mushroom pieces. The woods were loaded with mushrooms, some as big as 10-12 inches across. I wish I knew more about mushroom picking. Enjoy the rest of your season, Maine is a wonderful place to be outdoors!!!

    Great hunting! You’re correct that chocolate color phase is not a “red” or rufous phase. One more thing, a broken hand of the center primary tail feathers usually indicate a hen, the primary feathers growing right up to the tail feathers are the best way to determine sex of each bird, one or two-tan colored dots nearest the end(not the tip prior to)are sure ways to identify. Now young thunder chicken hunter I’ll leave it to you to determine which. I’m a grouse maniac with 47 years of being blessed to pursue these magnificent game & my state’s official bird. Good Luck and keep them coming. Tim Leighty 1GROUSE PA

    Jesse this might interest you but down here in NC , the red phase grouse is almost all we have ,, once a season maybe , I would see the grey phase , we have a season limit also here ,,,30 is that number , and three per day , although any more a limit is not needed, we don’t have the spread of birds to even make it possible to get a daily limit

    • @MainelyOutDoors
      @MainelyOutDoors  Před 2 lety +2

    Nice! Its been a pretty decent grouse season so far this year! My 9 year old shot his first grouse in the air last week....we we're pretty excited about that! Wasn't his first grouse shot (probably shot about 40 between last year and this year) but his first in the air. Those bacon grouse sandwiches looked delicious! Nice hunt!

    I always enjoy your grouse hunting videos! In my state, grouse populations have gotten critically low due to the Forrests aging up and not providing suitable habitat anymore. The conservation agency has released some birds, but ruffled grouse will likely remain extirpated from most of the state for the foreseeable future.

    FWIW. A broken tail band (two middle feathers) indicates a female or hen grouse, rather than its age. A male typically has an unbroken full tail band. But that’s not definitive, as some males have a broken band as well. The number of dots on the rump feathers. (The feathers on the lower back that cover the base of the tail) are a better indicator of sex. Two sometimes three dots on those feathers is a male. No dots or one dot is a female.

    Awesome grouse hunting vid Jess! I always wondered about what does a grouse in the red or orange phase look like. Thank you for getting one in that phase. I’ve acquired tails from buddies that hunt them and that Breadcrust fly calls for that phase. Don’t really think it matters what phase. Anyway, loved that catch /cook grouse sandwich. Drooling here at work. Go get some more and keep the film rolling!

      28, 20, and 16 are ideal. too close and the 12 destroys the bird. 410 really should only be used for up close ground-pounding. it's a ballistic disaster and crippler of game.
