  • The Toggenburg is a Swiss Dairy Goat from Toggenburg Valley of Switzerland at Obertoggenburg. They are likewise credited as being the oldest recognized Dairy Goat Breed. This type is medium size, tough, vigorous, and alert in appearance. A little smaller sized than the other Alpine types, the does weigh a minimum of 120 pounds (55kg). Its color is solid differing from light fawn to dark chocolate without any preference for any shade.
Toggenburgs perform best in cooler conditions. They are noted for their excellent udder advancement and high Milk Production, and have an average fat test of 3.7 percent. The earliest type of dairy goat in the United States, the Toggenburg has shown widely adaptable. It is defined by a comparatively small, solid-coloured body of any shade of brown, white ears with a dark main area, two white stripes down the face, and predominantly white legs.
The Toggenburg is the traditional Goat type of the Toggenburg and Werdenberg areas of the Canton of St. Gallen in eastern Switzerland. In the beginning, the Goats were often dark-coated, often with white markings; there might have been some cross-breeding with Appenzell and Chamois-colored stock in neighboring areas.
