Super video - I'd like to see a part two video such as... Preheat cabin using app to prevent wipers and side window damage from frozen water. Use app to unlock door to make it easier than punching handle in icy weather. Take over steering from autopilot to avoid road potholes and debris. Hold windscreen clean button to clean camera to prevent repetitive dry wiping of front windscreen due to dirt covering windscreen camera. Avoid tailing construction vehicles that might fling gravel onto windscreen that is a bit lighter and thinner compared other cars. Avoid car washes that might scratch the paint which is water-based so easier to scratch. Be careful of puncturing battery pack by driving over uneven road. Wash sunscreen from palms of hands as the steering wheel material might get damaged from the chemicals.
Great video for us newbies, thanks!!
Good tip on the window opening and closing doors. I didn’t realize I was doing that
I cringe when I see it on my car 😅
@@JustFrugalMe4:25 In addition to charging my battery between 10/20%-80/95%, when home, I also reduce the charging rate from 12amps to as low as 5amps to further help prolong battery life.
Very good tips/video, thanks!!
Glad it was helpful!
Nice, good advices. For the doors sadly you have to push a little hard to be sure it closes, at least for my 2018 model 3.
Thanks for sharing
Charging to 100% isn’t a good routine practice but just prior to a road trip is what it’s designed for.
Correct 👍🏽
Unless you have a rwd model 3 lfp battery. Recommended to charge at lease to 100 once a week
@MrBrooklyn295 good to know. I did hear them say to charge it up once a week, but didn't realize all the way to 100%. I just bought my 1st Tesla a week ago. It's a Model 3 LFP battery. Thanks!
I have a LFP battery👍🏽I just want to say my Tesla purchase was the best purchase I have ever made, my co workers have non Tesla EV’s and hate road trips They complain about their charging options, not me.
Good info. Thanks
Excellent tips!
So with LFP battery can you just go full-on 100% all the time and try to never get below 20% to maintain battery life?
Thanks for the excellent tips, very appreciated
Yes, exactly
Great tips, thanks! One question, I’ve wondered if I have the regen set on “hold” do the brake lights come on as I start to come to a stop? I worry that I’m stopping without using the brakes and the driver behind me doesn’t know.
Lights come on
It's the Korean cars (Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis) which had a problem of their brake lights not illuminating under one-pedal driving. They fixed that with a software update. Most other EVs don't have that issue.
Great tips here, every new Tesla owner should check this video and watch all the way to the end. And the tip about not charging the Lithium ION battery to 100% is important both for preserving the life of the battery and for use of regenerative braking. If you use the HOLD setting for one-pedal driving (which I highly recommend - just try it for a week and you'll never go back) then with yoour battery at 100%, there is no more "room" left in your battery to store the energy generated by lifting your foot slightly back on the accelerator pedal. That energy is lost as heat instead. Thanks to Mr. Frugal for these tips.
4:25 In addition to charging my battery between 10/20%-80/95%, when home, I also reduce the charging rate from 12amps to as low as 5amps to further help prolong battery life.
@@Crunch_dGHslower charging has been proven to not prolong battery life
You’re an excellent teacher!!!
For the people that use our own charge at home ,,, do we have to preacondition the car ?
Thanks for explaining me how to close the hood
💯
For about $500 you can get an electric Frunk opener. A friend of mine has one and it is very nice to have.
Other than maintaining the battery charge, what rots first or what parts degrade or rust if you don't run the car, say, for a year?
If you don't run your car for a year, various parts can start to degrade or rust due to lack of use and exposure to moisture. It's always a good idea to keep your vehicle in regular use or properly store it to prevent these issues.
Great video. Do more like this
Could you answer the question re: preconditing for home charging? Thanks
Precondition only for superchargers
Thank you…
Just bought a model Y last December. Haven't checked if the car has an LFP battery or not. If it does, is it ok to charge more than 80%?
Yes, you can charge to 100% all the time, is what they told me when I went to pick up my brand new model 3 and first Tesla last week 😊 since it's a LFP battery. I did learn however, that supercharging up to 80%-90% from less than 20% is most efficient. That last 10% takes a longer time, especially from 99% to 100% while it's calibrating. I'm never doing that again at a Supercharging station 😅
@@marinehero This is not correct. OP stated that he has a Model Y, and there is no LFP battery option for the Y. Only newer Model 3 SR has a LFP option.
The easiest way to confirm your battery is to check the Charging screen. As shown in the video, cars with NCM batteries will show a message stating to keep below 80% SoC for routine driving. LFP battery cars do not display that message when dragging the charge limit slider above 80%.
I suggest preconditioning, especially in the morning, before your departure.
👍🏽always
Always turn this feature on for my work week then turn it off on my Friday. 40min commute so gotta make sure my car is prepped for that
Is the blind spot monitoring only present when you use autopilot??
It’s not just limited to autopilot, it will work with and without
Thank you, picked mine up today and I didn't know any of this.
Do the batteries need preconditioned before I charge with my home charger. I’m assuming because it is so much slower than the supercharger that preconditioning would not be necessary. And also does driving it count as preconditioning?
No driving it does not count, you can hear the car precondition once you press precondition
Thank you
You can hear the HVAC turn on when charging at home. It warms the battery to a minimum temp before charging. The preconditioning is more important for fast chargers.
@@Ryan-ff2db thank you, I’m learning a lot
@@pattywright9335 Your welcome. If you navigate where you're going, you don't ever have to worry about preconditioning. The car will direct you to the best supercharger on your route and will do the preconditioning automatically. I actually never think about preconditioning, ever, it just does it.
How do u precondition the battery when charging nightly at home ?
In your app under schedule/departure/precondition.
You don't. Preconditioning your battery is meant for speeding up a DC fast-charging session. You're not fast-charging in your garage!
Soon as you plug in, the car is going to condition the battery for recharging. Preconditioning is you just trying to get a head-start on the warm-up process before you reach a Supercharger station.
my yet to be delivered model y will be my fourth electric vehicle. we leased the first two and still own the third. we charged each one to 100% on a regular basis for the entire 3 year lease on each and weve never had any problems; no heat, no capacity loss, etc. that probably has a lot do with the fact that we rarely ever charge over 12 amps.
Thanks for all your information. I am a single user of my Model Y. I have watched many Tesla videos and aware of all these precautions. One thing, I only charge up at home so never use Supercharging. I always charge battery to 90% and with my daily driving always recharge when it gets down to 60%. Just my daily habits. I do not recharge every day due to just around town driving, only when needed.
I do precondition in colder weather and set a departure time when I plan to start driving.
Thank you so much for your kind words and for being such a responsible Tesla owner! It's awesome to hear that you're following all the precautions and taking good care of your Model Y. Keep up the great work!
@@JustFrugalMe you are welcome. Enjoy all your videos.
enjoyed the video!
Yay! Thank you!
Where can you find what type of battery is in the car?
In your car, touch the "Car" icon in the lower left corner of the screen.
Select "Software"
Select the blue text that says "Additional Vehicle Information"
Look for "Low-Voltage Battery" about halfway down that list.
There you go.
@@thomasruwart1722Wouldn't that be "High Voltage Battery"?
The low-voltage battery is for hotel loads and keeping the computers booted up.
@@BogeyTheBear - It will tell you the type of the High Voltage Battery too. For some reason I thought the question was about the Low Voltage Battery because in 2022 it was changed from a Lead Acid 12VDC battery to a Lithium Ion 16VDC battery.
Good advices❤
Thank you!
To the point and no BS, 😊
There is a voice command "Eject Passenger" but that just turns on the passenger seat heater which is probably a good thing😊
LOL, imagine the confusion if someone accidentally said "Eject Passenger" and the seat actually ejected them! Good thing it's just the seat heater turning on. Stay warm, my friend!
@@JustFrugalMe - You stay warm too! Have a great week!
Is that a public park where you always shoot your vids? I noticed that no one else is ever parked in that lot.
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Thatnks for your videos!
My pleasure!
Two months since I've had my tesla I'm not using the break pedal anymore!
Also: There's a ton of rust on my brake rotors!
You need to chatge to 100% once in a while to balance the cells!!!
Spot on!
Thank you for your feedback! It's great to know that you find the voice commands intuitive.
One mistake seems to be that a Tesla cannot park between the lines 0:28
Always charge to 100% on an LFP battery
Tesla recommends this but I’m still going to try and keep it at 50 percent a majority of the time were basically any lithium battery loves to be at. I think Tesla only recommends that with lfps because they can become super inaccurate very fast. I’m stilling charging to 100 once per week though. I’m pretty sure lfps can handle being at 100 percent way better than nickel based but I’m just doing anything I can to avoid an out of warranty battery repair for a model 3 that can cost $15k plus
Thank you…
Welcome!
Agree.
Love ❤my tesla!
Mee too
@@JustFrugalMe I've learned a lot on two months wow!

Hell, I don't open a door by grabbing a _framed_ window. Frames have never been robust-- what kind of Neanderthal uses a thin loop of sheet metal surrounding a glass pane as their door handle?
Well, I guess the Neanderthals were just ahead of their time when it came to minimalist design and unconventional door handles!
Tesla very nice but i rather rent it cause aint no telling if the battery going to go out are malfunction itself but maybe iif we fully go electric i might
Don't worry, the Tesla battery won't go out on you like a bad date! But hey, renting is a smart choice too. You can try out different Tesla models and see which one is your true electric car soulmate.
Charging to 100% is OK now and then, but immediately start driving. Same for discharging below 20% this is Ok as long as you do not leave it parked at this low state of charge for a long time, charge immediately when parked.
I charge my car always to 90% and degradation is about 6-7% after 2 and a half years.
Thanks for sharing your experience! It's always helpful to hear from others who have been using their cars for a while.
@JustFrugalMe - Wow! So much helpful information! So many different details of ways to give more respect to the design & features of your Tesla! Yea! Hahahahaha! 😇
Glad it was helpful!
Too many 'do nots' to my liking. The door open/close is terrifying, just ask the Tesla owner who crashed the car, then burned to death as the FPD could not open any door, as the handle was non-responsive. Wait, you can't. My Bad.
So basically, this expensive cheaply made vehicle, needs more babying than a toddler. Reminds me of my sons cheap plastic car toys, buy them to look at not play.
No I am not good with the regen braking: I want control over it. I want to set up the amount of regen braking I might want! I do not like that Elon's forcing me to adjust my driving habits. I can do that on my own volition, thank you very much!
Ok I’m going to give you some amazing tips on walking first thing you need to do this is so important push your left foot in front of your right foot then keep the left foot stable and push your right foot out there and here’s another tip keep repeating this, you could even do this at a fast pace and they will call it something else
Great walk-thru on walking. Now, what's that other thing called - can you run thru that for us?😊
Sorry, I could not resist responding to your delightfully amusing comment. Thanks for the laugh! Have a great weekend!
Please, can I buy an overpriced POS which is so fragile I can actually damage the car by incorrectly closing the frunk, or opening or closing the door the wrong way?
I understand your concerns about the fragility of the car. It's always important to handle any vehicle with care to avoid any unnecessary damage.
One mistake that was left out was; buying the thing.
🤡
Your forgot one more which was your mom making you
Out of curiosity, why do you watch these videos if you think buying a Tesla is a mistake? Have you driven a Tesla? Been in a Tesla?
@@thomasruwart1722 lol preach
@thomasruwart1722 I watch videos because I am a former teacher and investigator. I watch the video because I am retired! I also comment on them using my skills and experience. Anyway, I was looking at one Tesla but I like the screen in front of me as well. I also like buttons. So, I drive the inexpensive Chevy Bolt ($10,000 to $20,000 less) that beat out other brands including a Tesla in an endurance run.
I didn't realise that tesla cars were so fragile. It's call under-engineering. A great way for a manufacturer to increase profit per customer, if they have to replace more broken and bent parts than mainstream auto manufacturers who build their cars with more strength
It’s called ‘light-weighting’. No more metal than is required. Not every car needs to do everything -They aren’t work trucks, but if you treat it like one, it won’t hold up.
@@worldtrav72 if the "required amount of metal" was used, there would be no need for special frunk closing instructions, door opening and closing instructions, or replacement boot (trunk) hinges.
None of my cars have ever required any special hood or door opening and closing techniques, and their boot hinges are just as unbent as they were on the day they left the assembly lines. And none have had any disgusting odours from the a/c
My current cars include dodge challenger (US), Nissan leaf (Jaoan), ford mustang (US), ford falcon (aussie), Ford Capri (UK), MG ZS EV (china)
I repeat, tesla is under-engineered. Just like FSD, tesla uses their customers as unpaid beta-testers as they market partially developed vehicles
I would rather have a lighter than heavier hood to help with my mileage
@@Gabri3lRocha as ev's regenerate on deceleration, weight is somewhat irrelevant to milage. A slightly heavier car requires slightly more energy to accelerate, but it also has slightly more momentum (due to slight extra wright) which means slightly more energy is regenerated on deceleration. The net effect is just the heat loss in energy conversion
And your tesla hood / frunk probably weighs about 10kg. Amy weight saving in your hood would be in the grams range. Easily offset if you forgot to take a leak before your drive, or you had a big breakfast. ie completely trivial
But an under engineered part gets damaged or broken more easily, costing the owner extra $$$ for no benefit. It only benefits the manufacturer, who gets to sell you a new hood / door handle / boot hinges / etc.
@@tristramsnowdon5256 fine I agree with the last part but I’m pretty sure that even though your losing a lot of the regen energy due to heat both when recharging the battery and also using that energy to accelerate again that overall your still saving more energy compared to coasting or friction breaking were 0 of that heat energy is being saved
Who could possibly want a vehicle that’s so fragile and soooo expensive to repair? #evtotalscam
There is nothing premium about frameless windows. It is a cost cutting turnoff that results in windows that tend to rattle, at least when partially down and just as you demonstrate, unnecessary fragility.
I didn't say it's top-tier; I just meant it gives off a premium vibe. Lots of those frameless cars fall into the luxury range!
It might be more about weight than cost. Traditionally a sedan has framed windows while a hardtop has frameless ones. Look at any inexpensive car out three... Focus, Spark, Altima, even the Civic all have framed doors.
BMW has used frameless windows for years.
Frameless windows are very popular in high end cars. My Tesla is nowhere near a high end luxury but it does give it a cool vibe
It's about aerodynamics more than esthetics or cost savings. The design and engineering that go into these cars focus on minimizing drag and weight. Drag is perhaps the most critical factor that affects range. That's just physics and Tesla understands this very well.
I'm still not getting a Tesla or any other EV...😂😂😂
Who needs a Tesla when you can have a horse-drawn carriage, am I right? Just kidding! EVs are awesome, but it's all about finding the right fit for you. No pressure, my friend!
Because your uneducated
