You should do this every year
It depends where you live and how much you use it. My unit is 6 years old and still clean.
Minisplits do need cleaning BUT I clean mine with a pump garden sprayer . Mix water a cup of vinegar two tablespoons of dish soap and 1/4 cup of bleach in the two gallon garden sprayer. Remove the filters and clean. Starting at the top of the unit, the cooling coils and start spraying carefully side to side . Watch that the outside drain hose starts to run the water you are spraying out the hose. If it appears that the water is not running freely then take a wet/ dry vacuum cleaner and suck out the end of the drain hose. The water you are spraying to clean the cooling coils needs to run freely out that drain hose.
I clean my three minisplits like this every season end and at the beginning of the season. The oldest minisplit I own is over ten years old so I guess this type of cleaning works. Be careful what garden water you use. If the city water has to much minerals and is salty, you can do more harm then good using city water. It doesn’t take that much water to clean the inside unit. The outside unit needs only to be rinsed and make sure the bottom drain is open so that the water you are using along with rain water is free to run out.
