Riding Jan Ullrich`s Giant/Walser TT bike - an exercise in pain!!!

- Jan Ullrich, one of the finest, if flawed, cyclists of his generation and East Germany`s super rider - Jan Ullrich was the only rider that Lance Armstrong really worried about, especially when in 2003 Ullrich showed up at the Tour De France with custom TT bike that was lightyears ahead of the game - a Giant branded Walser model 5...
Ullrich used Walser TT bikes to devastating effect for the rest of his career, the example we have here is his 2005/6 Team Telekom TT team bike, complete as he last rode it except for the wheels which are another story...
In this video we take a close look at the Ullrich Walser, expecially the narrowed 75mm bottom bracket and super narrow 110mm rear dropouts (should have mentioned in the video this frame has adapted track dropouts)!
How does it ride? Does the narrow Q factor make a difference? Nope, the darned extreme position will finish you off long before your knees explode!
We also take a look at the career and life of Jan Ullrich - his highs, many lows and Lance Armstrong`s life saving interventions... only in cycling...

Brilliant video. Ullrich was always a favourite of mine and I am glad he seems to have his demons under control. I understand he runs a cycling company which runs fan rides, I'd love to meet the man.
Yep, looks like he`s in a better state of mind - hadn`t heard he was doing meet up rides, Dan
For a modest 20k Euros or so, you, too, can meet Mr. Ullrich.
Another great video! I would like to know more about the builder. Interesting that Giant with all their resources could not come up with something comparable. Thanks again! Please keep the videos coming!
Yep, thats got to be one of the most bizarre episodes - Andy Walser was primarily an architect turned carbon racing sled builder who did super niche top end bikes on the side, then disappeared... Dan
Suffering in pursuit of knowledge, I like it! Not a beautiful bike but it obviously suited Ulrich’s unique frame and talent. Thank you.
A lesson in suffering... Dan
What a machine but not one I would chhoose to get my leg over.
Thanks for posting
Fair to say its not one of my regular rides, but the sound is really cool, Dan
I have what I was told to be a giant team bike, I’m unsure how I would confirm this mind. Lovely bike you have there!
Can be tricky confirming a team bike - which team? Most T-Mobiles should be carbon Giant TCR with a race number hanger (though this was also on some replicas) - is there a rider name? Dan
fascinating!
This bike has been my dream bike (actually, the 2003 version on which Ullrich defeated Armstrong in that legendary time trial) for many years. Ullrich going absolutely ballistic on it on Cap Decouverte looked so incredibly athletic, really becoming one with the machine. I'd be curious which position he would be riding in now, where the position is generally much more upright on the TT bikes. Thanks so much for making this video.
If I remember correctly the early version Ullrich rode in `03 had the rim brakes hidden behind the forks - super cool. Both Ullrich and Boardman used these extreme positions as they could make power when folded up - I`m pretty sure they`d embrace the higher positions currently used and go even faster, Dan
Great stuff! (I watched the yoga video) 👍
Blimey, you watched the yoga vid - thats doubled the views... Dan
Woo nice bicycle check, one that I would not expect. No pain no gain took one for the team huh? Next bicycle hmm...let's try Lemond GLx 1994 with the Rock Shox. 😂
No that would be a ride... Dan
love the story about Treks tt bikes sucked so bad they sent an employee pretending to be a "triathlete" to get one of the frames.....it might not be 100% true but it's a very Trek thing to do 😁
Trek/US Postal skulduggery - oh yes, all the way... Dan
it is sad to see Ullrich fall so far . It seems many cycling "heroes" don't have a happy ending.
Yep, super sad - heroes from that period didn`t fair well - people who claim we should just let riders take the drugs are very ill-informed as to the long term ramifications... Dan
The bicycle is what it says on it a GIANT my brother has a 2006 TCR LIMITED
Regular Giant TCR`s are excellent bikes - though I prefer the older ally TCR`s, Dan
Jan Ullrich's Pinarello Paris SL. Please!
Ah, that would be good - a challenge to locate though... Dan
Good Man, If you find two let me know, I'm on the hunting.
By the way my Pina Monviso alu frame is a rocket! made in 1998.
you are welcome if you wat to try it. Dan
Regards<
D
I do like an ally frame from the turn of the century... Dan@@user-cq4nq8ci9o
