  • This vlog is for our dog agility fans, it's a dog agility training vlog with Kayl McCann. You'll see some of the dog agility training Kayl is doing with her young Border Collie, Bee-Line. You'll also see some of Kayl's dog agility contact training with a young dog. There is a lot of decision making when it comes to training contacts with any agility dog. In this video, Kayl will talk about why she chose the training she did when it comes to Funkee Monkee, Grand Slam, and Rad.

    I’m starting contacts with my pup so I’m quickly learning all the challenges that we are facing ! Good video for tips!

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  Před 6 lety +2

      The most important thing to remember when you’re introducing a dog to contacts is don’t rush the training process. There are lots of dogs who develop issues with their end contact behavior because their handler tried to sequence obstacles too early. Make sure you maintain high standards for your end contact behavior. Or sometimes handlers try to challenge their dog too early, by increasing the height of the teeter too fast. Confidence is of the utmost importance when training the contact obstacles. Make sure you’re seeing lots of confidence and drive, before making the obstacle more challenging. That way you’re sure to have lightning fast, consistent contacts in your agility dog!
      Glad you enjoyed the video, happy training! ~Ken

    I think we know how all the dogs feel about the name discrimination / sharing game: Rad: If I just sit here like a good boy, my time will come. Bee: OMG this is so great and so fun! Funkee: I AM NOT HAPPY ABOUT THIS WAIT TIME!

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  Před 6 lety

      That’s so funny! And so very true😉 Have you had a similar experience? ~Ken

    • @Celineylovesyou
      @Celineylovesyou Před 6 lety +1

      Severus prefers all the food to be for him! Although he's not quite as vocal about it as Funkee. He used to guard food from our rescue dog when we first adopted her, but after they got to know each other more we used this game with food to work on his RG and to teach Whizbee her name. He still comes to me if I call her name though. #facepalm

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  Před 6 lety

      I'm glad you were able to work through the resource guarding without too much trouble. As for the 2 dog response to name, It's funny what they will learn even without us teaching it to them:) ~Ken

    • @Celineylovesyou
      @Celineylovesyou Před 6 lety

      True! Although, in his defense, I did teach it to him. In order to work on his RG, I always followed a treat for Whizbee with a treat for him to CC her getting my treats. So I've very effectively taught him that a treat for her will lead to a treat for him! Can't ever separate the operant from the classical! (that reinforcement schedule has thinned to almost nothing now, but the history is still there! lol) I'll take it over RG any day though.

    • @McCannDogs

      I think the important take-away is that you were proactive. These types of problems are often overlooked, or avoided instead of being trained out. Good work! ~Ken

      Yes, I have seen the cooking channel. I am trying the last one this week. the snow dogs make my mom smile she has early dementia, . she actually remembers the dogs

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  Před 6 lety +1

      That’s really wonderful that your Mom remembers the dogs😊 Dogs can have such an impact on family. We actually refer to our dogs as four-legged family members. If your Mom enjoys watching dogs on Video, you guys should watch our vlog playlist. There are lots of high flying Border Collies in our videos. They’re a little different than the Huskies. But they’re just as lovable❤️. I hope you enjoy our channel, and I hope your Mom does as well! I’ll post a link to the McCann Dogs Vlogs playlist below! ~Ken

      I love all dogs because I had two rescue dogs and I lost them. but right now i don't thinks its fair to a pet if you can't spend time with them since I take care of three (sorry 2 family members) I just lost my uncle a couple weeks ago. so now I will be spending more time with my mom. I will be showing my mom your channel also.

    I’ve just started agility training with my 6 month old pup. She’s been doing so well, but she’s having some trouble with following hand signals. Does anyone have any tips?

    • @katiemartinez5279
      @katiemartinez5279 Před 4 lety +1

      I'm no expert but if you use the hand signal and go slow through the course, and start closer to it then you can gradually start moving further away from that obstacles.

    oh and another question i have is how should i go about training name discrimination.... my one dog casey you can say her name her nicknames here, come etc and she'll come.. i found when we fostered a BC last summer we would say the borders name and call her to come and both dogs would come running when what i wouldve liked to happen especially with this new pup is that the dogs to come unless we say their name even if we call the other dogs name the one stays...do you have any suggestions

    I have a agility question if anyone can help I am new to agility btw
    My dog is quite slow with treats like running before the jumps and tunnels but can be quite speedy when having a toy but she is not as focused
    Any way I can include both into training
    Thanks

    • @lilymasters708
      @lilymasters708 Před 4 lety

      I would say use treats when training the obstacle but when you are practicing a whole run use toys and be on leash so that if she loses attention you can have control.

    I know this is an older post, but I'd love to hear from Kayl who her inspirations/mentors were. What started her in dogs. What is HER story? Shes really helped us with training and getting our first titles. She is our inspiration. I've even developed her voice style when complimenting her dogs for doing well. We love her and would love to know more about the trainer herself.

      Hi there, SplinterFox! You’ll hear more about Kayl’s story in an upcoming video on the TedXTalks channel. But Kayl started her dog training because of her parents.
