  • After 20+ years, one of my VHS-C adaptors failed to open up so as I could retrieve the tape which resulted in tape retrieval which then snowballed like a lead Zeppelin (not the band) down hill!

    I had the same problem with an old (18 yr) video tape. Thanks to this video, I could see that if I could get the tape off the spindles, I could rewind it and pop it out of the door. I crinkled some of the early part of the tape doing it, but if my stepson can find somethng to play this on, he'll have some video of his son from a very early age! Thanks so much for the videos!

    I think your video helped me. My mom's, which I think we've had for the last 21 or 22 years, the open button was stuck and would not work. Besides being extremely dirty (we live in the desert, so lots of dust and dirt), it also still had the original AA battery it came with. Luckily, no corrosion, but definitely long since dead. Anyway, I opened mine before even trying a new battery, also still in the process of cleaning.... that damn little spring for the little red triangle popped out and I have no clue at all how it goes back in. Anyway, I cleaned the rest, stuck a battery in, and everything worked, even without the little red plastic triangle piece. So yeah, was nice to watch along when I was unsure if I was getting it all back together right and all.

    Dude, you were like 99% there. It's a lot easier to reassemble the bits in the "loaded" position. If not, you have to use the peg on the long arm to push the latch release to the left. The release is the spring loaded thing to the bottom right of the actual latch. If the adapter is in the loaded position, then that latch is already to the left and you don't have to mess with the tension. Once it's moved, you'll be able to open the door as well.

    I just bought one from Amazon because I'm finally digitizing all my dad's home movies he took of us. I did about 20-25 tapes and the damn thing jammed. I had to open it up to put the tape back in the cassette and then figure out how to free the cassette from it's jail, which of course led to everything falling out of place when I actioned the motor since they're all laid in there. I understand the mechanics of it, but I just think the left arm of it was cast improperly because it has a circular area where the underlying mechanism rides in it if they free (in your hands), but once you put the cog knob in the slots for that piece and the arm, those two pieces don't mesh with each other, instead they overlap. I've been trying to put the damn thing back together perfectly for hours. It's either the arms and motor work fine, but it never shuts off and the door never opens, or I can open and close the door without a tape in there, but as soon as I put one in the damn thing jams and I have to take it apart again!!

    My VHS-C adapter also got stuck in teh same manner.. , after I tried to open up the casette door while lifting the front casette flap at the same time (I wanted to see the mechanism in action, it was really cool). Unlike your case though the motor wasn't spinning constantly, and I figured it might have put itself in an invalid state or something.. I tried opening it up, but I now regret doing so. A spring flew off that belonged to that triangle thing and I have lost it entirely, but I think it's not a very essential spring so it's not too bad. However thanks to your video I was able to put it back together.
    I still think it's repairable though, so I might try again, but perhaps I'll make a video log this time as I go so that I can backtrack easily like how you did.

    My adapter also didn't flip open. I just physically helped the cog underneath to turn all the way with my finger then it opened up. I used a rechargeable 1.2v batt instead of the standard 1.5 volt batt. That maybe the reason it didnt open all the way.

    Good evening,
    I found an old VHS C adapter, with a tape in it. But the button that opens the small door is broken. there is no more button. but with a toothpick I manage to activate the mechanism which puts the band back in the vhs c tape.
    I didn't go all the way for fear of breaking something. you think i can press and it will put the tape back in the tape? I have a new adapter, but I'm afraid for the tape.

    The half-inch-wide magnetic tape used in VHS-C cassettes is the same as regular VHS tape, so if you're handy with a screwdriver and tape-splicing gizmo, you really don't even need an adapter; you can just take out the tape from four T-30 VHS-C cassettes and splice the four tape-segments together end-to-end to make a 120-mnute VHS tape. Just spool each tape-segment onto a regular full-size VHS tape-hub as you go, and then splice the end of the last tape-segment into the leader-strip on another empty VHS tape-hub when the first hub is full. Then install the spooled-tape-and-reels assembly into a standard VHS cassette-housing.

    • @VintageElectronicsGeek
      @VintageElectronicsGeek  Před 8 lety

      +Quacks0 Interesting idea! However I'm not sure how cost effective that would be as one would need to purchase shells if they don't have them, for neophytes, that may be overwhelming...but for us who likes to dork, it would be a cool project! Thanks for sharing and commenting!

    • @Quacks0
      @Quacks0 Před 8 lety

      +Vintage Electronics Geek True, although any standard 5-screw VHS tape will do, so you could just recycle the housing from an old tape that you don't want the content of anymore. I often carefully disassemble old advertising/instructional-video cassettes that each only contain a few minutes of tape, splice these short tape-lengths together to make one longer tape to erase and re-record onto (or to slightly lengthen an already-filled cassette that is just a few minutes too short to hold all of the material that I want to record onto it; one needs to take care not to spool on too much "supplementary" tape, though, of course, so that this additional tape doesn't cause the cassette's supply or take-up reel to "overflow"), and then either use the empty cassette-housings to store shorter sections of tape that I do want (like from several VHS-C cassettes as we were discussing here), or save them in a box for replacing worn/broken/warped cases of used tapes that I find at yard sales.
      P.S. I see that other folks are doing this, as well: czcams.com/video/WZMpHDlt_RI/video.html

    The same thing happened to me. I took apart the whole thing. And it was only the door latch that was stuck. One piece (I think the long bottom one) had switched places with the latch and that was jamming the adapter. Now the mechanics are working. But I'm left with two springs that I don't know where they came from. That's why I'm watching this teardown video.

    • @VintageElectronicsGeek

    You actually are closer than you think to fixing this. I ran into the same problem with the latch but determined the other part of the release is activated by the bar which you removed at 6:07. It cannot be done manually via the slide because it requires power from the battery to operate. Not much, but I think it is still needed.
    If you turn that part over, you will see it has a stem than inserts down to the release. Most importantly though, is all of this thing is driven by the power from the AA battery. It is possible the original reason the tape couldn't be removed is simply the battery is no longer any good. If you put it back together and add a new battery, you may find that the release works and you actually did fix it. If you need more help, I have no idea to do private email via youtube, so I will check back to see how things are going for you.

I opened and released the gear that was stuck and put it in position as if the tape was completely loaded. Then when I slide the button to release the tape it worked fine.. both arms go down releasing the tape and opening the lid. The problem that I am facing is that when I insert a tape, it doest work. dont lift the arms, dont load the tape. dont move at all. It looks like the motor just work in one direction, releasing the tape, but not loading. I checked all the arms and moveable parts and seems fine. but I cant make the gears to run to oposite side lifting the arms.. can you help me on that ?

    I opened mine, it has the same problem, it looks like it is the problem with the switch that has to turn the motor in the other direction, if you wind the screw back by hand you will see that there is a lever that keeps the plastic hing in place when there is no cassete so you can open it, but when there is a cassete the lever moves so the adapter is locked until the motor winds up the tape inside of camera cassete.

    Hola. Muchas gracias

      Why would you throw it out? You do know these are no longer made since 20 years ago, right? You're not going to get another one. They are $25-$30 on eBay for one now. Have fun.

    I discover that if you remove all the pieces, the last one (that because the switch cant back) isnt necesary. So its solved! Really, but now i have 1 piece extra...

      Look young lady, the only failure here is the fact that your mom and dad didn't raise you with proper manners! Nor did they send you to school to get a proper education, if they did then you would have read the title and description and understood the words, heck....I didn't even use big words, so you couldn't have got that lost! And again, if you had a proper education you would have learned how to research or look up words and meanings you didn't understand! I would carry on with more examples, but its a moot point....as you see young lady, I really don't care how you feel or think. If you can do better by all means go for it! Bless your little tiny tiny baby heart! ~Jack, VEG

      I had already set your expectation very low as stated in the description in the video and on the page, I clearly state this attempted repair was a failure. The point of this video and all my videos are for historical purposes only, I apologize if it was not up to your expectations after you clearly read my intro, what else could I have done for you?
